Chapter Ten
I said nothing to the warriors as I passed by them as I crossed over into pack lands. My steps are slow as I mindlessly make my way back home. Relief rushes through me as my house comes into sight. I want to get inside, kiss my babies and climb into bed so tomorrow can finally come. I trudge up the steps and quietly open the door in case Haylee is sleeping.I’m not surprised to see her awake watching tv in the living room. She shuts it off and stands up as I close the door behind me.“How did it go?” Her eyes are wide as she stays rooted to her spot. I quickly cross over to her with tears now streaming down my face. Taking me into her arms, she hugs me and slowly lowers us down to the couch. “What happened, Raven?” concern coats her voice.“He-had-Rafe-with-him-” I hiccup out through my tears. “At first- it was like- he wasn’t even there Haylee,” I cry out, “h

Chapter Eleven
After spending some time with Jade in the morning and asking if she recalled what she said the night before, she didn’t. I walk her to school and then head straight over to the library, saying thanks and giving fake smiles to those I pass who offer me their sympathies, not stopping on my mission.I walk straight to the back and strain on my tippy toes to reach the book that Finn had pulled the day before. After a few little hops, I manage to get a grip and pull it, opening the secret door.“Shit,” I spit out when the lantern is not where I saw Finn replace it yesterday. I plaster myself against the wall and use my sight the best I can in the pitch-black stairwell and slowly make my way down. A sigh of relief as I feel that I’m finally at the bottom and walking into the room. I’m pleasantly surprised to see Finn is here.“Finally you are here,” he says with no preamble. “I pulle

“The Moon goddess’ temples,” Finn shouts as he jumps up from his seat. The book drops from my hands, startled by his outburst.Leaning down on the table, he looks at me, “the Bloodstone is hidden in one of the Moon goddess’ temples.”My breath stutters, “are you sure? Any idea which one, cause there are five of them.” Excitement growing at the possibility of finding it.“Yes, I am sure. Which one, though, of that I am not.”“Finn?” I twist my hands together on the table in front of me. I’ve thought a lot about what finding this Bloodstone would mean, and the thoughts I have are darker than I’m used to, I don’t want to share them for fear of him stopping me, but I fear if I don’t share them, I won’t be stopped. He gazes at me knowingly.“If I find this Bloodstone, you know I w

“Arrogant assholes. Do they forget who you are?” Finn grumbles as we leave the Half Moon pack, upset with how they dismissed and treated us callously.“You mean who we are? We’re equal Finn.” I glance out the side of my eye at him.He scoffs, “we all know that’s a lie, Raven. As much as we preach that everyone in our pack is equal, it’s not true at all.”I stumble at his words. Swinging around to face him, he comes to a stop.“Is that how you feel? You don’t feel you’re treated the same as everyone else, the same as me?”He weighs his words before saying, “the same as everyone? close. We may not have the hierarchy like this pack here,” his hand swings out, motioning behind us to where we just left, “but the groups or cliques make up for that in our pack. The council, though they say they are not above anyone, always act like they are a

Chapter Fourteen
After an uneventful trip, we finally make it to the city and the temple. The same as the last village, we shift before entering. The difference between this city and the last village is that even though the streets were empty when we arrived, you could tell it was a lived-in village, but here it has an empty, eerie feel to it. There are no lights on in the run-down houses or shops we pass. I see no movement nor sense any. The only light comes from the temple up on the hill.“I’m wishing I would have just stayed home at this point. Nothing about this journey has been what I expected. And from your reactions, it’s not normal either,” Finn mutters as we take slow, calculated steps through the town, peeking in windows that show they have abandoned this town some time ago.“The last one was weird. No men that anyone remembers? Now, this? This town, since it houses a temple, should above any others be thriving and teeming with life.”

Chapter Fifteen
I’m determined more than ever to continue, if not only for the Bloodstone, but to get an idea of what Duncan has under his control and what we will be up against when this war happens. My mental list is growing with concerns to report when I return home.“I checked on them again and made sure they’re still knocked out,” Finn says, coming up behind where I stand outside, looking down on the town.“You’re not supposed to go by them, Finn. We talked about this,” I scold. With a shrug of his shoulders, he takes off down the path.“Dammit, Finnian. First of all, you need to stop just walking away without me. Second, listen to me about this. If we come across any more witches, you need to get away so they can’t use you.” I say, striding up to his side.“Why do you think you’re so special and the only one that can fight off their advances?” He asks, perturbed.“Finn

We’re only halfway through our journey when I had to shift out of my wolf because her anger and thirst for vengeance were too much. I needed a chance to think for myself and it’s easier to push aside her thoughts when in human form. But now the image of my claws slicing into Rafe replay like a highlight reel, not releasing me from its clutches. There was so much force behind that swipe that my stomach churns at the memory of it. I know he will heal, but my heart still breaks from any amount of pain I cause him.“Do you want to talk about it?” Finn asks, finally breaking the silence.“No, I don’t,” I say rather harshly, but I can’t find it in me to care right now. I can’t care about anyone else’s feelings when I have to find this damn stone and get my mate away from that prick.“I know this is hard on you-”“No, you don’t know Finn,

I move swiftly up the stairs, wanting the element of surprise when I reach the witches. I’m careful not to make a sound. Once at the top, I groan when I see the door is closed, ruining my chance for a silent entrance. I listen but don’t hear movement directly behind this door, so I slowly turn the handle and the door slides open silently. I open it only enough for me to peer out. Seeing nothing, I inch it open so I can stick my entire head through and look around. No one is in the room, so I push through the door, closing it behind me. My breath leaves in a slow stream. There’s a large granite table in the middle with chairs around it. Noting the papers strewn over it, I file that information away to look at them after. There are three doors. One is wide open, crossing the room to peer inside, I see it’s a storage room, and no one is in there. I move to the next door, leaning as close as I can withou

She said Rafe is home. What about Jasper, though? Why and how is he back? Is this a game Duncan is playing, sending Rafe back to spy or infiltrate from the inside somehow?Goddess, all of these questions and I have no answers.I pushed Finn and Lucy to the max yesterday and today, trying to get home. “Raven, we have to stop for the night,” Finn yells.I slow down looking over my shoulder to see him, and Lucy stopped, their chests heaving for air.“We were about a week’s journey from the pack. We won’t be able to get back running nonstop like you have us doing.”I hang my head. Dammit, he’s right. If I keep pushing them it could lead to worse things that would delay us further. I turn around and walk back toward them.“I’m pretty sure there’s a lake over that way, so we may be able to find shelter near there for the night,” I sa

The moment pack lands were in sight, I took off, pushing my muscles to the point of exhaustion. But not willing to give in until I was in Rafe’s arms. In my haste, I left Finnian and Lucy in the dust without a second thought. Oh well, Finn can figure out what to do with Lucy and her being on pack lands.Once I’m in my backyard, my shift is the fastest it’s ever been. Throwing a dress on, my voice cracks as I call out, “Rafe! Jasper!” while pushing through the back door.My breath catches in my throat and my pulse beats frantically as I wait for a reply, but none comes. I race around the house, up the stairs to check all the rooms, but no one is home. Both adrenaline and exhaustion are warring within me as my body shakes as I stand on the bottom step trying to focus, and think where they could even be.‘Jade, where are you guys?’ I mind link her.‘We are at the confer
