Chapter 31
I took off speed-walking down to Vaughan's office. Nearing the large doors, I briefly remembered the last time I'd been here. Just as the memory of me flinging open the doors flashed across my mind, the door was hurriedly pulled open, and out walked a flustered looking Beta Alister. He spotted me coming and drew to an immediate stop. Caught off guard, he failed to mask the nervous expression on his face. He soon got a grip of himself and wiped the look clean, replacing it with a calm expression. A part of me instantly grew a bit suspicious. He drew level with me, flashing one of his calm, good natured smiles, his blond locks falling over bright green eyes. He was handsome. I realized this was the first time I was actually looking at him, and I had to admit, he had a nice smile. I also had to admit, the resemblance between him and Winifred was stark."Miss Hilda, what brings you here to the Alpha's office?" h

Chapter 32
The next day came in a burst of bright sunlight and high expectations. Standing beside Vaughan's sleek mustang, we were packed and ready to head out. The werewolves were gathered a short distance away from it, wishing us good luck, their voices loud and loaded with hope. Vaughan nodded, saying a few words to them, then he got into the car. I did the same, settling into the smooth leather seats. Beyond the windshield, I watched as the pack's gates lifted. A part of me suddenly got hit with the direness of our situation. 'The vampire Link would play an important role in the coming war,' the Seer had said. 'A role that might not work in our favour.' If we didn't find this Link, we might as well kiss our chances of ever winning the war goodbye. After driving up the service trial, we hit the main road. We drove on in silence, with Vaughan staring up ahead, hands tight around the steering wheel. A few minutes passed by. The silence seemed to stretch on and taunt me, until I broke it. "

Chapter 33
I'd gone back to the counter and after awkwardly explaining that I'd forgotten my room number, the woman had been kind enough to not only tell me my room, but instruct a concierge  to show me to it. When I stood before the door, the boy with a full head of curls smiled down at me, showcasing a dimple on his cheek, then before turning to leave, he winked at me, leaving me staring at his tall, retreating figure. Why couldn't I be into gorgeous boys like that? I mean, I was: if Gerad Justin was any indication. But apparently fate knew better--or less--by shackling me with a brooding man I could barely stay a day without mentally cursing at. Sighing, I pushed open the door and was instantly met with a shirtless Vaughan. Well, goodbye sanity. Muscles bunching and flexing with strain, he stopped what he was doing when he spotted me. Straightening, he muttered, "Took you long enough." And just like that my earlier anger came rushing back

My eyes were teased open by bright sunlight. When I opened them, I groaned, feeling groggy and disoriented. I snuggled into the warm skin beneath m--I shot up, staring down at piercing grey eyes, my hand flying to my gaping mouth. In a split second I scrambled away from him, landing on my feet. I instantly put some space between us.Eyes wide, I stared at him, waiting for him to castigate me.His husky morning voice wafted through my ears as he said, "At least someone had a good night sleep."Taming my disorderly hair, I stuttered, "Y-yeah, well I--"His eyes flashed yellow, his tone dropping to dangerous notes. "Don't...try that again next time."My mouth opened and closed. "It wasn't like y--""Don't," he grated out. "I could have hurt you."Startled at the concern in his voice, I fell qui

Opening the door to the room, I was met with a pissed Vaughan. He drew drew closer to me, then bent so his eyes were the same level with mine. "Where were you?" he asked lowly."Out looking for clues on where the vampire might be," I answered. His eyes flashed yellow, his nostrils flaring. "Damn it, Hilda! We're not safe. If the vampires are planning to war with our kind, they're sure as hell going to keep the main figures in sight. Which includes you, Hilda. You're not a shewolf of the Stillmoon pack anymore, you belong to Beastclaw now. And under the recent circumstances, this makes you a prime target."Holding his gaze, we stared each other down at length, until I said. "Hiding away won't solve anything.""Being careless won't, either.""I wasn't being careless! If anything I was helping!"He folded his a

My mind whirled with a million thoughts as I coated my lips with red lipstick. One was, what if the vampire wouldn't come to the party today? What if they knew we were on to them? Turning my face sideways at intervals, I checked that my two winged eyeliners matched. And who was the person letting the vampires into the pack?Satisfied, I turned away from the mirror and grabbed my silver studded clutch. On my way out of the closet, I paused when my phone pinged.Swiping it, I saw it was a text from Robyn. 'Any lead on the vampire yet?'It took a while before I texted, 'Yeah. Apparently they've been going around killing people. I don't think keeping a low profile is high on their list... (Pun unintended.)'For a short moment, I stood there waiting to get a reply. When one wasn't forthcoming, I put my phone back into the clutch and closed it, exiting the walk-in room.

As we drove into the night, the speaker gave off directions to The blooms courtyard.Putting the last curl in place, I asked, "I wasn't able to reach April Thorne, were you?"He shook his head, saying, "No. Her line kept going to voicemail."A sigh escaped me. "There goes our plan of buying our way in.""Don't worry, I'll think of something," he assured.                           __                    My mouth gaped open in shock while watching Vaughan drag the couple's unconscious forms back into the car they came in."This," I hissed. "Was your plan?Just shortly after coming here, we'd parked at a corner in the spacious lot. Vaughan had come out the car to briefl

I felt solid warmth behind me and turned, the smell of cinnamon filling my nose.Ever so perceptive, Vaughan took note of something on my face and became alert. "Is anything wrong?""No, no," I was quick to reassure him. "It's just"--I turned to face the auctioneer--"that necklace...""What about it?"I locked gazes with him. "I need to get it."Vaughan looked at it, his eyes calculative. People continued to bid loudly, "Ten million!""Ten point three!""Ten point five!""Twenty million," came the cool voice above me.My head snapped upwards and I widened my eyes at him disbelief. "I didn't mean you should pay for it!" I whispered harshly. He looked down at me, mildly confused. "How else were we supposed to get it?""I was go

We took off running into the main hall. Inside was a mad house. In a bid to run out of the room unscathed, shrieking men and women overturned tables filled with food and drinks, shattering glasses and spilling colourful liquids all around."Look out!" Vaughan pulled me to him when a huge man slid on the wet tiles and came hurtling towards my direction, arms flailing, mouth opened wide in a yell. While the crowd ran away from the source of the scream, I and Vaughan ran towards it, speeding into a corner that led out back. Far off into the night, we spotted two people struggling. A thin woman against a giant of a manMy blood ran cold when his fangs extended and he sank them into her neck to her loud shrieks. She soon fell limp in his arms, and the man, injured, hobbled towards his car. Vaughan started to run then, changing into his wolf mid air.Just as the vampire made a hasty reverse with his car, Vaughan's wolf landed on the windscreen, eli

Vaughan tore his gaze away from the road to throw me a quick glance. "What do you mean?""There was this other girl at the warehouse," I explained, confused myself. "When she'd looked at me I felt this... I don't know, some sort of familiarity. As if some part of me had recognized her as another Link."He continued to drive, digesting it all in. He suddenly let out a heavy sigh. "If that's true then you know what this means.""What?""We've achieved nothing.""Oh," I said absently, leaning back defeatedly in my seat. "But we could go back, there's st--" the plan that'd been forming in my mind died. With a deflated sigh I said, "Except they'll change their locations after today.""No," he said."No?" I asked."They won't do that," he said, easing into another lane."Well, why?"
