"Where are you going?” he heard James ask upon seeing him slipping into his jacket. "You don't have work today, right?"Felix stopped by the door and turned to look at him. He almost forgot that he hadn't mentioned anything about him working multiple odd jobs at the same time. Rubbing his nape, he chuckled, "Oh, I didn't tell you? I'm going out to meet a few friends.”"That's great!” his guardian smiled brightly before returning his gaze to his open book. "Be safe.”He ran out the door and into the streets cramped with overflowing trash bins and stray cats. As the days were getting colder, fewer people loitered outside. But tonight was especially cold that he could slightly see his breath forming in the air with every exhale.Stuffing his hands into his pockets, he sank into the collar of his jacket in an attempt to keep himself warm. It felt awful to lie to James as he'd almost never done so before, but since his nineteenth birthday more than a month ago, he figured tha

Felix took one last glance at the sleeping James through the small crack in his door. Shouldering his backpack, he walked back into the deserted streets and closed the front door behind him. The wind blew past his cheeks, and he lifted his hoodie over his head, tightening the drawstrings. He fished out his phone and the small scrap of paper from his pocket before deliberately dialing Adelyn's number. As he pressed the screen against his ear, he heard the soft ringing through the speakers but dropped the call after a while when she didn't answer. The time read 2:34 AM, so he figured that the girl was most likely asleep by now and decided to give her a call when the sun's up."Where do I go from here?” he mumbled to himself while his feet took him to the direction of the highway. Felix admitted to himself that this was the most reckless and impulsive decision he ever made, and he was probably not as ready as he thought he was. The empty streets and the lack of company m

"This is where they were seen last,” Addie said while sliding a piece of paper across the coffee table and over to his side. Felix examined the page—it was the map of one of the poorer areas in the city with a red circle around an establishment. "Apparently, they stayed there for a while and most likely rented the entire building.”His memory clicked in. "Oh, I know this inn. I worked here for a while.”She took a sip of coffee from her cup and continued to scribble on her notebook. Her brows furrowed, and the tip of her pencil waved in the air aggressively as she placed all of her focus onto writing. Felix casually stared while she did so, his chin resting on his palm.It was already half past one, but ever since she got out of bed a few hours ago, she didn't dare meet his eyes. It didn't help either that every time he tried to talk to her about anything besides his parents' unknown whereabouts or how his father was trying to hunt her down, she would immediately—and awkwar

One would think that the Bennets, once one of the most influential packs at a point in the history of the nation, would live in the luxurious heart of the capital. Instead, it was the complete opposite. Felix watched in amazement and surprise at the thick foliage on either side of the road through the damp windows. The figures of old evergreens rushed by as the car sped through the highway, their vibrant colors mixing with the dark grey sky in a blur. Warm air blasted through the car's air conditioning, its subtle whirring accompanied by some random pop music coming from the radio. Through his peripheral vision, he could see Adelyn bobbing her head along with the beat, seemingly unconscious about it, while her lips mouthed the lyrics quietly. Being away from the usual hustle of the city made the trio feel a little bit at ease though their trip wasn't for their leisure. They were reminded of this when a run-down estate slowly came into view. It stood out among the tal

The first thing that registered in Enzo's mind was the ache in every inch of his body, but what hurt the most out of them all was the very center of his chest where his heart lay. The pain immediately reminded him of the unfortunate events that unfolded before he lost consciousness. Sounds of the deafening explosion, the agonized screams of countless human slaves as they burned to death, and the loud bang of a gunshot echoed in his ears as if those traumatizing moments were all happening yet again. The fear crept up his throat and if it weren't for the pain impairing his voice, he would've screamed right then. A lone tear slid down his left cheek when he opened his eyes. Upon finding himself staring at the familiar ceiling of Lance's van, the terror subsided at once, and he became thankful for his temporary mutism. His surroundings shook and moved, the feeling of the rough terrain vibrating against his back. His vision was a little bit blurry from t
