Chapter 51
The swarm of people heading to the venue signaled the beginning of the brunch party as well as the release of my social anxiety. I was rarely ever present in large gatherings, choosing to rather stay behind the scenes during such huge celebrations.Vivian had instructed us to stick to the ‘Golden Royal’ theme which she announced an hour before the party, barely leaving enough time to go shopping.I rummaged around inside my travel bag with the hope of finding something that would seem acceptable to her, but everything I had inside defeated the party’s idea. Frustrated, I sat on the edge of the bed and took out my phone to dial Rita’s number for assistance. Just then, Terrence walked in.“You look distraught my love, anything the matter?” he asked concerned as he sat next to me on the bed. He welcomed me for an embrace which I took in a feat to calm myself down. The idea of not dressing appropriately for the occasion troubled me as I did not wish to get into Vivian’s bad books. However

Chapter 52
I had been the center of attention ever since the name Lucas Benjamin was first uttered. My fame led to me being invited to all social gatherings in and out of New York just for the sake of the tag.Ladies would gawk whenever I passed, silently whispering their names close to me for attention while the men created a way for me to pass, hoping to get on my good books for business deals and women too. That had been my world as Lucas Benjamin, and I had learned how to get comfortable with camera flashes and devious winks.Until now, I had never granted my attention to anyone else during such occasions. Charlotte had effortlessly captured my eyes and she made it hard for me to peel them off of her, admiring her body that sat well inside the dress. Her ebony black hair tumbled over her shoulders covering the bare-back dress that fit her like a glove.I watched her from a distance, my eyes glued on her every move. It was hard to tell if she had gotten rid of her social anxiety as she broke

Lucas’s musky scent reached me before I could lay my eyes on him. I could tell that he was in close proximity as I inhaled his cologne which was occupying a greater percentage of the air outside.I served myself some banana cake, and the feeling of giddiness overwhelmed me inside. Food has always been a mood-lifter for me, making me forget the rising anxiety inside my body.“You look so beautiful, Charlotte Manning.” The whisper in my ear caused my insides to turn. My skin suddenly grew taut as I took a deep breath in before turning back. Lucas was standing behind me, too close for the cluster of people to gossip about, but not close enough for me.He had changed his attire from the last time I saw him in Vivian’s room, looking ravishing in a black tuxedo and a black shirt underneath that was halfway buttoned, leaving his chest out for my eyes to get lost in.“And you don’t look bad yourself,” I said, looking at him with pure admiration and lust. I was unsure if he could read my emoti

I watched her as she drifted away from everyone, her steps seeming uneven. Her head was slightly tilted as her hand gently rubbed her temple on one side of her head. I could tell she was struggling to move quickly but was unsure whether her irregularity was caused by her heels or if she was in dire need of aid. I took a few steps to reach her before someone stopped me in my tracks.“Hey man! It’s been a minute, yeah?” I halted suddenly, furiously turning my gaze to meet him. I tried jolting my memories to remember him, but my head was focused on Charlotte who had reached the door to the house, her stand growing weaker with every step she took.I watched as her silhouette retreated into the house, swaying weakly as she took the steps to her room. I watched her through the glass windows struggling to find her way and it became certain that something was wrong. It wasn’t the heels.“So, do you think we can have a beer over it?” The gruffy voice pulled me out of my thoughts. I turned back

Chapter 55
Vivian set her travel bag in the trunk of her car, ready to drive down to the airport for her flight back to Britain. She was reluctant to go, finding it harder to separate from her brother a second time. She stood there longer, wishing she had another choice than leaving him behind so quickly.“I will miss you dearly,” she declared, leaning in for an embrace. Terrence held her tightly, blinking away the tears that dared to collect in his own eyes. They still had a lot to talk about, a lot more catching up to do, but he shelved all of it as he understood the reason she had to leave abruptly. He thought about what he could have been having he remained behind in Kent’s household – definitely not a writer – perhaps owning one of Kent’s magnificent businesses that were just a shell to cover his lucrative drugs business.Maybe he would have a posh car like Vivian’s red Bentley, tour different cities with Charlotte, and catch flights to countries like Charlotte wanted. Maybe, he wouldn’t be

Chapter 56
It was the third day of our staycation in New York. This day was meant to be sunny and blue, a day for us to relax and enjoy the city with all its buzz. Instead, we were driving down the neighborhood searching for Terrence. He had stormed out of the house without saying a word, and now, three hours later, no one had gotten wind of his whereabouts. His phone was going automatically to voicemail, and the message box had blocked me from sending any more remorseful texts.I looked out of the window throughout the entire drive, my eyes red and swollen from the crying. I was past regret because making out with Lucas was something I had dreamed about for ages. Shame was also not the feeling I had because, despite the stares from the crowd afterward, nothing I had done was shameful to me.However, I felt remorseful. I had p

“Let’s go back home,” she spoke after lifting her eyes off her screen. I locked in the rage I felt inside of me and reversed the car back to where we came from. It pained me to see her this distraught about something that we both enjoyed, but the idea that she pinning the entire blame on me pained me the most. I drove back silently, not shooting even a glance her way. Once in the compound, she dashed into the house and went straight to her room. I walked over to the bar and poured myself a drink, gulping it down my throat in one swerve. Jacque approached me to notify me that dinner was served but my stomach could not handle any more weight than it currently was. I followed Charlotte’s tracks, disappearing into my room with a bottle of Bruichladdich in my hand. I planned on forgetting the day’s events even though a part of me wanted to keep the memory of Charl

Chapter 58
I stood in the doorway, my eyes still welling with tears. There was no response from the gate to let me through as I had left my access card behind when I left for New York. I stood at the gate for an hour, waiting patiently for someone to let me in. The security system at the apartment was tight, only granting access to the tenants with entry cards.Terrence was either not in the house or he did not want to let me in as I had pressed the bell intermittently but to no response. I had left multiple messages on his phone which were still automatically going to voicemail, and till now, I was yet to get a callback.I sat outside on the dusty pavement, ignoring the glares and hushed whispers of the passersby. I pulled my knees to my chest and buried my face in the space between. The helplessness I felt mixed with the jetlag weighed on me heavily, but still, the only

I was in the office earlier than everyone, optimizing every chance I got to distract my mind from thinking about her, or anyone else for that matter. The clock hanging on the hallway wall indicated that it was half past six in the morning which was the earliest I had ever been at work.I opened my laptop and went through the tasks that I had failed to do because of my hangover yesterday. Luce had rescheduled all my meetings leaving me with only two for the day as the rest were spread out through the week.I downloaded some of the attachments she had sent over to my email for approval, signing them electronically before I sent them back. I was about to call Luce for confirmation of some of the business deal proposals that I saw on our dashboard but hesitated as I had not switched on my phone for fear of more ambush from Vivian.I sat still, waiting for Luce to come to the office instead. This did not take too long as she was the first to walk into the office before the clock ticked 7 a

Chapter 60
It had been two days since Charlotte moved in with Rita, and still no word from Terrence. He had neither reported back to the office which left Charlotte feeling guilty for breaking his heart to the extent where he missed his job. She was in no hurry to return back to work, choosing to rather wallow in her misery on Rita’s couch. Charlotte had left a couple of voice messages to Terrence hoping to rewrite her wrongs, but he was yet to reach back to her. “So, hate to be the bearer of good news when you are mourning,” Rita began one evening from work, “But, I got the invitation letter to London!” she squealed, galloping in excitement towards Charlotte. she leaped on the couch with joy, making Charlotte bounce up and down, a faint smile on her face as she watched her best friend live her dreams. “Yay!” She sat up on the couch, joining her best friend in celebration. Her eyes had grown tired of shedding any more tears, forcing her to put the troubles of her love story aside, and selfles
