Chapter 40
ZESA RUSSO It was a Sunday morning and instead of going out to relax and enjoy my hard earned money; I sat in my bedroom, deep in thoughts. After contemplating, reconsidering, and proper evaluation of the situation, I decided I would visit Nina. I wanted to see for myself what this woman looked like and what gave her the audacity to push me off a building. No matter how much I hated to admit it, that woman would somehow keep showing up in my life, even though it would be only just the mention of her name.“What are you thinking about?” I was pulled out of my train of thoughts when I heard Levi’s voice. He was peeking his head into the room. “I’ve been looking at you and didn’t even notice.” He let himself into the room and came to sit beside me. “What’s on your mind?”“I want to see Nina.”He exhaled, releasing some of the tension that had built up in his shoulders. “Why do you want to see her?”I stared ahead into nothing. “I’ve been curious for days now. A part of me want

Chapter 41
ZESA RUSSO After the dance with Levi, Alejandro and Sophia approached me. I didn’t fail to notice the scowl on her face. It was as if she was forced to be here. I smiled at her and she rolled her eyes, turning her head away from me. Alejandro pulled me into his embrace, taking me by surprise. I hesitated at first before hugging him back. He untangled himself from the hug and took a step back.“Happy birthday, Miss Russo.”“Thank you.” I darted my eyes to Sophia. “It’s good to see you again.”Her face was sour. “Likewise.”I shifted my attention to Alejandro. “Excuse me. I have to greet the other guests.”As I made my way to Marie, I glimpsed Levi. He had a glass of champagne in his hand as he greeted some people I didn’t know. I instantly thought back to the dance. He’d said he loved me. I felt butterflies in my stomach and a tumult of joy at his words, yet I didn’t say it back. I only wished to say it after I recollected my memory. Only then would it really mean so much to

Chapter 42
LEVI DEL CAMPA I glanced around the hall, searching for Zesa. When I did not see her, I weaved my way through to Malena and Finn, who appeared to be in a serious conversation. Malena offered a small smile, brushing back her hair. “Have you seen Zesa?” I questioned, darting my eyes between the two.“She and Alejandro stepped out a few minutes ago.” Finn answered. “Said he wanted to talk to her about something.”“You left Zesa with Alejandro?” I asked, putting on one hand on my waist after pushing back my suit jacket. “Where are they?”Finn came to his feet. “I don’t know. Malena is with her purse and phone, though.”I hated this situation. How in the world did he think it was fine to leave her alone with him? I did not care if it was business or another kind of discussion. The fact that he’d made it clear to me his feelings for her, even when he knew I was her husband, was a clear sign he was really serious about her. And in Zesa’s condition, she could hardly tell what if he

ALEJANDRO ORTEGA She remembered everything. I’d heard her say it as I walked away from the room. I refused to believe another opportunity had slipped right through my fingers, but according to Intel from Techya, the way she worked now was different. The business tycoon, who many people feared, was back. When it came to Zesa, there was hardly any competition because she put herself and Techya in a position where not just anybody could climb up to. She was the kind of woman I needed. A woman who knew how to get what she wanted by pulling the right strings, unlike the immature woman I was expected to spend the rest of my life with. Zesa knew how to manage her finances, but all Sophia knew was about spending. Her family wasn’t even that well off. A pity. “Are you even listening to me?” I lifted my eyes from the book in my hand. The Mark of Exile. It was the sequel to The Corpse in the Fog—a crime story about a man killing the lover of the woman he desperately wanted. You co

Chapter 44
ZESA RUSSO Having a career woman as a wife was one thing. Having a wife whose corporation does better than yours one another thing. I wasn’t gloating or anything. I was thankful, if anything. There were relationships out there where the men got upset because their wives were doing better or earning more than they were. Having a husband who didn’t care the slightest bit about such a thing was a blessing. It was even better if he stayed up at night, waiting for you to come home. With a content sigh, I raised my gaze from my computer to Finn and put my arms on the armrest of my chair. Finn stood on the other side of the table, holding a royal blue file in his hand. He selected a sheet of paper from the file and handed it to me.“It’s the opening schedule of the new Techya branch in Miami.” He said, taking a step back to gauge my reaction. His attitude toward me had changed. He no longer treated me as if I was a newbie. Instead, he not treated me like a boss he feared a little.

ZESA RUSSODISCLAIMER: Acts of sexual harassment in this chapter. Please read with caution. Alejandro crouched in front of me, waiting patiently with a smile for the effects of the drug to fully kick in. I stared at him, unable to speak or move, even though all I wanted to do was scream at him. I couldn’t, though. Taking the drink meant I signed up for this. Now I only wished I was the heroine in a storybook or a movie where the male lead would appear out of thin air and save me. I never thought I need saving until now. I needed someone to save me.“You look hot,” he said, reaching to take off my jacket.No. I’m not hot. Leave the damn jacket on. My thoughts had no power here. He stripped me out of my jacket and a prickling sensation shot up my spine when his fingers found the button of my dress shirt.“We can’t have you looking awful, now can we?”I wanted to scream at him to stop when he unbuttoned over two buttons. A wave of acid welled up in my stomach when he completel

Chapter 46
ZESA RUSSO Levi left me by myself after dressing me in a green pants and a big white tee. He’d asked me to get some shut eye yet I found myself getting of bed and padding across the rug, hugging a fluffy pillow into my chest as I slid open the door in my room that led to a balcony that grew from the walls of the house as generous arms from a host, the metal, a patina of ocean greens and blues. I inhaled deeply, letting fresh air fill my lungs, a nippy breeze biting at my skin. The East side of the city stretched in front of me. It would have been a lot prettier if it was nighttime, with the neon lights of the clubs and lights from tall buildings. And if it was nighttime, I wished it would be a grim, dark line against an even darker sky. It’s a sad thought, but I didn’t want stars to shine and didn’t want the moon to get through either. I wished for an empty black canvas to match my mood.As I enjoyed the calming scenery before me, a knock sounded on the door. I knew it was

Chapter 47
LEVI DEL CAMPA After making sure Zesa was comfortable and set to take a rest, I kissed her goodbye before leaving for Alejandro’s place. It wasn’t hard to find out where he lived. My mother had forced me to go there for a minor event he held about two years ago. She was trying to gain favor from him, but failed woefully. I parked my car in front of his gate, coincidentally arriving at the same time with Sophia. It was perfect timing because Alejandro would need someone to tend to his wounds by the time I was done with him. “What are you doing here?” she asked, advancing toward me. She wore a baggy dark blue denim jean with a beige shirt just as big and tucked the front in. On her feet were white sneakers and on her head was a black bucket hat. “I want to see your boyfriend. There’s something I need to talk to him about.” She nodded to herself. “You entrepreneurs always have a lot to talk about.” “It’s not about business. It’s about my wife.” Her countenance changed, and she stud

LEVI DEL CAMPA I was stunned, to say the least. Speechless even. I dragged my feet through the front door, halting momentarily when I saw Finn and Zesa in the living room, eating popcorn as they watched a movie. I don’t think I’d ever seen her watching something that wasn’t the news. What was this? I checked the time. 7.49p.m. He actually brought her home early, and she looked happy as she stared at me. “Come here,” she said, holding out her hand. I went to her, ignoring Finn, who was stuffing his face with popcorn. When I made eye contact with her, I felt shame. How could I tell her that my mother was the reason she was suffering? I forced a smile and sat down beside her. “What took you so long?” she queried, climbing onto my lap. Finn coughed loudly and stood up. “This is my cue to leave the premises.” He arranged his color, “Woe to us who aren’t married.” Zesa waved. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” “Women,” he sighed, going to pick up Zesa’s car keys from the table. “Dr

Chapter 49
LEVI DEL CAMPA By the time Zesa was done putting on her clothes, I had already collected Finn’s phone from the table to go give it to him. That guy had the worst timing I could think of. Of all the times he could come in, it had to be now. Just when I was so close to orgasm. Then again, it was our fault. We didn’t lock the door. But who would have thought he’d come back for something as small as a phone? I went outside to see Finn rubbing the back of his neck. He appeared to be as flustered as I was. He darted his eyes to Zesa when she came out.“I swear I did not know you’d be going at it in the living room. I just came for my phone.”“How much did you see?” she asked, eyeing him.I didn’t really think it was that necessary to know, but oh well. It was her body, so I guess she had the right to want to know if her male best friend of many years saw what she looked like down there. It was weird to think of.“I’d rather not go into the details.” He waved the car keys at her.
