Prolog

"Astrid, we need to go!” Jason yelled after me.“I know, okay! Trust me I know!” I yelled after him trying to shove my most treasured possessions in the smallest bag possible. How am I supposed to fit my life into this small ass bag?“Let’s go!” I hear Jason yell again. Dammit. I shove the only picture of my family I have along with money, passports, and IDs in the bag. I give one last look at the place I called home for the last few years and yell “Got it. Let’s go”We leave out the back and head down the alleyway. How did this happen? We were so careful! I didn’t understand. As if reading my mind Jason asks “How did this even happen?”“I don’t know Jason. It doesn’t make sense. We’ll find some answers later. We need to make sure the others are okay.” I turn right passing the flowers now stained with blood. A body lies on the pavement, eyes open and lifeless looking up at me. I don’t recognize the face. It isn’t one of ours. Human.“They’re using lethal force now.” Jason echoes behi

Feeling of Dread

8 hours before“Jason, are you ready to go? I need to get you to work on time” I asked. Jason was starting his first day of work at a local newspaper. He was able to graduate with his journalism degree and get a job rather quickly. We were all really proud. “Almost ready.” He responded as he placed the last strand of his honey brown hair in place. He always likes to keep it tamed and gelled up and back. It suited him well. He had on a button down long sleeve shirt, sleeves rolled up to his elbow. He had on a pair of dark jeans with a black belt and some loafers to complete his look. “Okay I am good to go now.” He turned to face me, prying his dark green eyes away from himself in the mirror. “Good, don't want you to be late on your first day.” I smiled at him “You look great” Jason blushed a bit. He was always so bashful and sweet. He had such a pure and innocent heart. We walked out of the house, I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror on the way out realizing I should have put m

Lieutenant General Carter

I paced my office floor waiting for the call from Lieutenant Jacobs. I needed this boy found and brought here immediately. With him we could find what we were looking for. We could finally find her and get what we needed. Just when I thought it my phone rang flashing Lieutenant Jacobs name on my screen I quickly swiped to answer. “Did you get the boy?” I asked impatiently“Not yet, sir. We are heading there now. Got the address from the case worker.” I heard the ding of an elevator as he said this. “Don’t take long, and you know what to do if anyone gives you any problems” I reminded. We needed this boy. “Yes sir.” He saidA few years ago we discovered a special who according to our findings has lived for well over 500 years. We have had specials with healing abilities before, but we’ve found out with testing that they can still die. This special that we found doesn’t seem to be able to die. We need to test it, test her, find that gene and replicate it. The problem was we couldn’t

When Shit Hit The Fan

AstridLandon was still on my mind as I headed to pick up Jason. I left work early today to make sure to be there to get Jason from work and hear all about his first day. I kept shaking this feeling of dread off. I figured it would have subsided by now after the Lieutenant left but it was still there, still ominously telling me something worse was going to happen. I pulled up to Jason’s building. Seeing him smile and wave at me helped ease some tension. “Astrid, it was wonderful!” He exclaimed, entering the car and buckling up. “Everyone was so nice and I have a mentor and she’s so smart and nice” He said, smiling so big. “ I am so happy you had a wonderful first day” I smiled back at him trying to drown my worry. “I wonder how Ruby will feel about this mentor of yours,” I teased. Ruby was Jason’s girlfriend. He met her when he had first moved in with us. It was cute seeing them together. Ruby was human though so they had to be careful. Specials and human relationships were definite

Where To Now?

JasonI felt myself get pulled away as if a hand reached from across the galaxy and grabbed me by the back of the shirt. It’s all so fast that before my mind can process what’s happening I popped up in front of Shawn. His face says it all. He’s a strong muscular man, the kind you would avoid at a bar. His face was always serious and his dark black eyes were always in cased with dark circles from the lack of sleep. His bright blond hair was a mess and I swear there were streaks of red in them today. He was wearing a black skin tight shirt that accentuated his muscles showing most of his colorful tattoo on his arm.“How’d you get here?” As if answering his own question he immediately asks “Where is Astrid?”I quickly fill him in on what’s happening and what Astrid told me we needed to do. Shawn nods.“You’ll find Libby and Whisper around the corner, they should be done getting dressed now.” He tells me. They had just gone for a swim at the beach and I was thankfully catching them after i

Jason“Okay, I have given you guys enough time to feel sorry for yourselves. It’s time so take a breath and bury it back down. We need to be focused.” Although her words are cold her tone is compassionate. Astrid understands better than any of us what this feels like. She’s been through it so many times throughout the hundreds of years she has lived, she showed me it this afternoon. I forgot just how old she is, she doesn’t look or act it. “Shawn turn here. Park it at the airport. Use the valet.” She continues as we approach the exit to the airport. “Won’t there be guards at the airport?” I ask fear rising up in me again. I don’t want to be caught and made to endure torture for hours just ot see what my body can handle. I don’t want to spend years of my life locked in a cell.“Yes, which is why we are gonna act like nothing's wrong. Like we are just fine to be at the airport. We are gonna get down and go inside, but we are not getting on a plane.” She states.“Then why are we going t

Lucas

Earlier that same dayI knew something was wrong. I could feel it. She didn’t have to tell me, I felt it with her all day, that impending sense of doom, that shit was going to hit the fan kind of feeling. I looked at Micheal, who had his earphones on, while listening to some rock music. His shaggy black hair was in his face covering his eyes as always. He was drumming along with his music, munching on his lip piercing. He was wearing a band teacher and ripped skinny jeans with checkered vans. His style had certainly changed over the years. You would think that living half a millenia would make us mature and boring, but we had to constantly keep up with the young adults. We were always around people in their 20s so that we could blend in better. “Something is wrong” I told him as I pulled an earphone out of his ear. He turned to look at me half mad, half confused. “What’s your problem man?” He huffed. “Something is wrong with Astrid.” I stated, further explaining. “And? So what? She

Reunited

Lucas“We need to get to the airport. Pack your irreplaceable bag.” I told them as I went to my room to do the same. I grabbed all of Astrids and my old wedding rings, our photos and old documents. Including all the titles to the different houses and lands we own.We got in our fastest car and headed to the airport, which thankfully wasn’t too far from our house. I had all our passports ready. We got there pretty quick and of course security had increased. I walked up to the counter laughing with Tristan acting like we were going on a vacation. I laughed loudly, acting extremely excited, as we approached the counter. The woman at the counter had dark brown hair and glasses. She smiled at us as we came up to her. Her name tag read Vicky. “Hello there Vicky!” I said. “Good afternoon” She smiled back. “My brother and my friends and I are wanting to go on a spontaneous vacation. Where is the soonest flight heading to Vicky?” I asked, smili

This Means War!

AstridI am such an idiot! Of course they would cover it up. I should have killed them all. I thought by sparing them that they would spare everyone else. Of course they wouldn’t, I don’t know what I was thinking. How could they kill so many innocent people? This was all my fault. They were after me. I had so many emotions building up in me. Hatred, confusion, depression, but mostly guilt so much guilt. Monica was dead, Ruby was dead, so many of our friends. I had spent these last few years getting to know all these people on Barker street. We were all close to one another, and we looked out for each other. When it came down to it, I was selfish. I only warned Jason. I should have warned everyone. I should have set that stupid radar off and telepathically told everyone to run. I hate this so much! I don’t know what to do. I wanted desperately to turn back time, but the last time I did that things only turned out worse.I let Lucas hold me a while. His sce

To Mexico

“We are going through that one” I said pointing to the portal straight across from us. “This one should take us straight to Juan Carlos’s cellar.” I placed the portal there during the last specials civil war when we had first met Juan Carlos. He was a healer like us. He was a couple hundred years old. For the longest time he kept his young looking 22 year old face, but as time progressed he slowly started to age. He currently looks to be in his late 40s.Juan Carlos seemed to age a little more every time he died. The problem with healers like him is they don’t always come back to life. Eventually that death is their final death, as if they are in a video game with a set number of lives. A lot of times healers don’t know that they are able to come back to life until they die but not every healer is able to come back, so a lot of them don’t test it. We don’t really know how many more times Juan Carlos can die before he doesn’t come back, but we figure with the rate at which he’s aging tha
