Runes
JAMES POVWe got Addie back to the hotel. Toby had called ahead and made arrangements for the penthouse and then found us all clothing to put on while we were driving. Watching Bruce put on pants while driving eighty miles per hour on the highway wasn’t for the faint of heart, but I knew showing up to the valet completely naked wasn’t a good idea. It was bad enough that Addie was just wrapped in a blanket.I should have given Toby more credit. Bruce pulled into the parking garage and the person Toby was on the phone with opened the private elevator and sent it up to the penthouse. A concierge was there with a key to let us in.Bruce excused himself to go wait on the roof for Dr. Joanna to arrive via helicopter. I lay Addie on the bed, her clear eyes looking up at me completely trusting. I removed the now dry towels and wet two more, laying them on her. She quietly thanked me.Dr. Joanna was with her for a long time. I waited outside the room with Toby, not sure I could contro

Elder Jackson
ADDIE POVJames came storming into the room and slammed the door behind him. I turned to look at him.“What are you doing up?” James asked, rushing to me.“I’m feeling better and would like to go home,” I said, smiling. “I thought if I showed you I was fine you’d be more inclined to take me.”He walked over and kissed my head. “I will gladly take you home, little pup. But there’s something we have to do first.”I looked at him. I could feel the fear and anger radiating from him. “What is it?”He sighed deeply and then pulled me on to his lap. “The witch burned Runes into your torso,” he said. “We have to change those Runes so no one can ever use them to take your gift from you.”I stilled. “How do we do that?” I think I knew, and I wasn’t thrilled about it.He looked at me with a look of anguish. I took a deep breath. “Okay,” I said. “Let’s get on with it, then. I don’t want to have to sit and think about it.”James took my hands in his. “I wish there was another way.”

The Apology
JAMES POVAfter Elder Jackson was done with Addie, I walked him down to the lobby. “You have a brave mate,” he said to me as he climbed into his car. I nodded. Yes, I did. And I needed to take care of a few things so that nothing would ruin what I had with her. I hailed a car and driver and gave directions to my office. I called Alice and let her know I was coming. Alice runs my offices and acts on my behalf when I’m with the Pack. She had a few things she needed my signature for and, since I was in the city, I was running by to sign them. I had also told Vanessa that I would arrange for her to get a job at the company and to stay in one of the company apartments. I wanted to arrange this with Alice personally. My phone rang as I was stepping in the elevator to go up to the top floor.“Hey Toby,” I answered, caller ID telling me who it was.“You’re a f^cking idiot, James. You should have stayed here with Addie.”I felt a cold trickle down my back. “Is she okay?” I asked

Caramel
ADDIE POVI fell asleep on the ride in and woke up when we got to the Packhouse. James reached into the back the SUV to help me out and I snuggled into his arms, letting him lift me. I really wasn’t in too much pain, but I liked the extra attention I was getting from him so, I admit it, I played it a little bit.The Omegas that gathered in the foyer to say hello to us when we arrived looked shocked to see me. I was a little affronted until I caught sight of myself in a mirror. And then I realized I looked bad.James tried to get me to go up to our room and rest, but I had just woken up and I wanted something to eat. I slipped into the kitchen and shooed Sophie out when she wouldn’t stop wringing her hands and telling me she could make whatever I wanted. James leaned against the counter and watched me whip up a pan of caramel with amusement.“What are you going to do with that?” he asked. I smirked at him and didn’t answer, reaching for a bowl of fruit.I sliced up mangos, appl

Bad Taste
ADDIE POVEmily threw herself into planning my Luna ceremony with everything she had. I tried to help out a little and give my opinion when asked, but I honestly didn’t care about a lot of things. When she came to me to ask me which shade of light blue I wanted the napkins to be, I plastered a fake smile on my face and randomly pointed at one swatch. It all looked the same to me, but by the look on her face, I realized I picked wrong.I decided honesty was the best policy.“Um, Emily? Can I talk to you?”She looked up from her stack of binders that she had organized the different caterers and event rentals into. “Sure, what’s up?” Her smile was faltering. I knew she expected the worst from the look on my face.“I don’t know how to say this without it coming across as incredibly ungrateful. So, please hear me out. I’m going to say it and if you want to hate me after, that’s okay. I probably deserve it.”She looked apprehensive. “You promise not to use your gift on me?”I put

The Witch
UNKNOWN POVHe climbed over a downed tree, the swampy air making him cough. He inwardly cursed the witch that made herself so unavailable that the closest he could bring his rental car was within a half mile to her house. He looked down at his expensive shoes. They were definitely ruined. He had thoughts he could salvage them until he accidently stepped ankle deep in some stagnant water. He finally made it to her house and his lip curled up in disgust. Why do dark witches have to be so disgusting, he wondered. Gransha was no exceptions. The tiny yard was littered with tools and implements, half rusted, and the carcass of some large animal hung from a tree in the middle of the yard. It was half skinned and pieces of its bones had been chopped off, probably for some sort of ritual. He was sure she wasn’t eating it. The carcass was half rotted and the smell brought tears to his eyes.Gransha met him on the front porch and beckoned him to come in. He ducked to get through the d

Luna Dress
ADDIE POVI left the dungeon with a heavy heart. I have been going the past couple of days to talk to Helena. She has such hatred for my family, and I don’t understand why. I have been speaking to her to try and determine if there was any form of redemption for her. James and Toby want to turn her over to the Council for punishment for what she tried to do to me. I don’t want that if it can be avoided. She’s the only part of my past that I have.I headed back to the Packhouse, trying to decide what I was going to do for the rest of the day. I was feeling down and really didn’t want to do much. Eating cookies and taking a nap sounded nice. I sighed. I needed to go train.Emily came out of the Packhouse at a run, meeting me.“I have the BEST news!” she said, huge smile on her face. I plastered a fake smile on mine. My Luna ceremony was nine days away and she has been working hard. I was trying to be nice, but I really didn’t feel like it. I decided to skip training and go

The Spell
ADDIE POVI turned in panic and was confronted by an old woman. “You must be Addie,” she said, huge smile on her face. “Yes, but my friend has been taken! I need to use your phone please Sheila!” I tried to push past her, and she let me, tottering at the edge of the sidewalk. I bounded up her rickety porch steps and into her house, pulling up short. This house wasn’t lived in. There was no furniture, the floorboards had been ripped up in spots and the doors were off hinges. It was dark, dank, and dirty. I whirled around, realizing too late that this was a trap for me, not for Emily and that woman on the front steps was not Sheila. The old woman was in the doorway, blocking me from running out. I whirled again and ran down the hall towards the back of the home, past a staircase going up. A man stepped into the doorframe and blocked my way. It was Danny.I whirled again, vaulting up the staircase and running up. I wasn’t sure where I was going but I had a small thought that

Assassin
EMILY POVI was beating on the privacy window between me and the driver when the car lurched to a stop. I could see that he was on the phone. He got out and carefully switched it to speaker so that the person on the other end could hear what was about to happen. Then he opened the back door.I started screaming. I wanted there to be as much confusion and chaos as possible, but I was going to kill this man. He had absolutely no chance. I was an assassin in my prior life and skills like those aren’t soon forgotten. My first blow damaged his windpipe. Even if he wanted to scream, he was unable to. He was able to grunt, and he did a lot of that. I kept screaming throughout while I systematically beat this man to death. I didn’t even have to shift. I hit him until he went down and then I crushed his larynx. I watched him suffocate to death in front of me and I genuinely felt nothing. I rolled him over and pulled the car keys out of his pocket. I jumped in the driver’s seat

Greyhound
JAMES POVThe vision was timely. If I had gotten the vision any later, I would have immediately been on a plane to Michigan. If I had gotten it any earlier, I think the shock and horror would have worn off enough that I would have jumped that plane. As it was, I was still fighting the urge, but caution was prevailing. I didn’t like it but I knew it was the right thing.Toby directed Emily to get to a safe place and park the car. Both of us have seen Emily drive and neither of us wanted her brainstorming while dealing with rush hour traffic. We waited, hearing an occasional screech of tires, before she was back on the line, breathless. Toby stared out by telling her of my vision. Hearing it again from his voice was enough to bring back that icy cold feeling in my heart. I didn’t know why this was what the future of the Pack would be, but I was planning on changing it. And for that, I knew I needed to be available to my pack.In Emily’s past life she was an assassin and a hunt
