Chapter 121 The Best Man
RiverWaiting with Ulysses for Sylvia to arrive at the wedding site was more stressful than River expected it to be. He'd known Ulysses for a long time, but he'd never really thought of him as a friend until recently. Now, watching the groom pace back and forth near the altar where his bride would be arriving eventually was making River nervous for him."She's late," Ulysses was muttering. The priestess was standing nearby, but she wasn't paying any attention, and the guests who were waiting patiently on log benches were mostly chatting amongst themselves, not listening to the groom or his best man."The bride is always late," River reminded him, patting him reassuringly on the shoulder."That's true," Ulysses said, sucking in a deep breath and blowing it out. "But… it's still nerve-wracking.""Isn't Sylvia always late, too?" River asked. Ulysses nodded. "So… put those two things together and she's bound to be extra late. She'll be here.""Yeah. I know," Ulysses said, still breathing

Chapter 122: Twisted
EllieThe girls in Ellie's leadership group were amazing. Even after Sylvia left and went to live with Ulysses in his territory, Ellie continued their training. It was her goal to teach as many women as possible how to take care of their packs and provide everything they could possibly need, whether it was from the nurturing side that was usually left to the Luna or the protective side that came from the Alpha. As much fun as it always was meeting with her group of twenty-three women ranging from age sixteen to twenty-five, one morning a few weeks after Sylvia and Ulysses tied the knot, Ellie woke up not feeling it. Her stomach felt twisted, she had no energy, and she swore her body was bloated in ways it never had been before. The clock read 7:30, so she knew she needed to get up so that she'd be ready to meet her girls at the gym. They started their day there with training before they moved around the village helping Ellie with whatever might arise that day. Ellie talked to them th

Chapter 123: Can't Hide in the Bushes
EllieStanding outside in the sun was not doing anything for Ellie's upset stomach. Even though it was still wintertime and hadn't gotten particularly hot yet, she still felt like the sun was directing all of its rays at her. She was doing her best to go through the day's lesson with the girls who'd come to train with her to be Lunas, but at the moment, she wanted to go back inside and teach them how to take a nap."Are you all right, Luna Ellie?" a sweet girl named Kara from River's pack asked her. "You're looking a little pale.""Oh, I'm fine," Ellie said, waving her hand at the girl dismissively. "I'm just fine. I think I just might've eaten something disagreeable this morning." She forced a laugh from between her lips but then grimaced again to keep anything else from coming out. Her experience earlier that morning, when she'd thrown up in the bathroom, was not as pleasant as sitting in a flower garden on a spring day admiring the roses, and she really didn't want to do it again.

Chapter 124: Answers
RiverLeaving Ellie that morning had been uncomfortable, to say the least. It seemed like she wasn't feeling well at all, and even though she refused to acknowledge that fact, he was worried. She didn't get sick very often–for that matter, most shifters didn't get sick very often, but she got sick even less often than most from what he'd heard–and he was worried that something was wrong. He sat behind his desk in the office looking over some paperwork that had been filed while he was away in his own pack tending to business there. His mind wouldn't stay focused on the documents in front of him, though. Every time he picked up a piece of paper, his mind wandered back to Ellie. Was she really okay? What if she wasn't? What if there was something seriously wrong with her? He couldn't bear to think about what might happen if something was wrong with Ellie. A knock on the office door had him straying away from his thoughts. "Yeah?" he called. He wished it was Ellie there to tell him she w

Chapter 125: Testing
EllieStanding in the bathroom staring at the toilet and the empty cup she'd been given like they were both her enemies, Ellie couldn't stop from crying. It wasn't like her to be so teary-eyed over anything, but for some reason, the reality that she had to be pregnant, that that was the only solution to what was wrong with her that made any sense, had her crying almost as much as she had when River had abandoned her at the aisle. Now, with her husband staring at her from the doorway, she had no answers for him. Was it a good thing that she was pregnant? She would like to think so. Ellie always thought she wanted to be a mother. She just wasn't sure she knew how.River came over to her and wrapped his arms around her, the bathroom door shutting behind him. "Ellie, honey, it's okay. Whatever it is that has you worried, we'll figure it out. It'll be fine, I promise you.""That's easy for you to say," Ellie said, trying to get her sniffles under control. "You have a mom, a great one. I ha

Chapter 126: Announcement
EllieThe best way to tell their families was to invite everyone over for dinner. Since Shelby knew the truth about the pregnancy, Ellie and River had to act fast. Shelby had promised not to tell anyone, but Ellie knew her best friend well. The girl couldn't keep a secret to save her life.River had called Patricia and asked her if she would mind coming over to their house in Ellie's pack lands for dinner that night, trying to sound nonchalant. She was back in River's village overseeing things while they were away, as she always did. While she was reluctant at first, she finally agreed. Patricia wasn't fond of driving at night, so in order to get her to come, River had invited her to stay the night at their house. It was much easier to get Ellie's family to the house. Michael was up for dinner anytime, especially if he got to cook, and Ellie had no problem telling him to make whatever he'd like. The boys–Seth, Hans, and Kane–were there at the mere mention of food. Shelby would be ther

Chapter 127: A New Day
River"I can't believe it," Patricia said over breakfast the next morning. River had carried a tray up to Ellie to eat in her bed. The healer had told her that her stomach would likely feel better if she'd eat something in bed before she tried to get up–protein and carbs. So he'd taken her some eggs, toast, and turkey. He didn't think it would make any sense to bring her anything that was going to be greasy and potentially make her stomach feel even worse."It's exciting, isn't it, Mom?" River said before taking a bite of his own bacon. Knowing how much Ellie loved bacon and that he was eating some when he didn't bring her any made him feel a bit guilty. But then… so did the fact that she was carrying around his baby, and he couldn't do anything about the guilt he'd be feeling about that for the next several months. Visions of what would happen in the delivery room also made him feel like he should go buy Ellie a huge gift–whatever she wanted. Wives didn't get enough credit as it was,

Chapter 128: A Strange Sensation
EllieOver the next several months, Ellie began to grow accustomed to the fact that her body wasn't solely her own anymore. The nausea faded as she began to enter her second trimester, and as spring was in full bloom, she was starting to feel a bit more like herself. But then… she knew it would be short-lived. Everyone that she spoke to who had been pregnant before was quick to tell her exactly what she could expect. Besides being exhausted all the time, apparently, she was about to feel all of her ligaments being stretched and torn, her muscles giving way, and the urge to eat every crazy combination of food she could possibly think of.Ellie wasn't sure whether she should be looking forward to finally having the baby out or terrified of meeting a person who could cause so much damage. At least the girls who were training to be Lunas were doing well. Patricia had been helping a lot with Luna duties in both packs, including the training, and Shelby had stepped in as well. With her wedd

Chapter 129: Vanished
RiverPatrolling such a large territory was harder than River would've thought before he became Alpha of two packs. Granted, he had a lot more Omega warriors to rely upon to help him out, but ultimately, he felt that he was responsible for ensuring every square inch of the borders were his responsibility for both territories, and that meant that he had to do a lot of running around himself.Ellie had told him about the uncomfortable feeling she'd had while she was out with her Luna's in training in the pack lands near the southwestern border of her original territory. Ever since that day about a month earlier, River was sure to keep a careful eye on that area of the land, but so far, in all of the patrols he'd done there, he'd seen nothing. Neither had anyone else. Likewise, they hadn't sensed anyone watching them the way that Ellie had. He didn't doubt his wife one bit, but he did wonder if maybe whoever she'd thought was out there in the woods had moved along. But then one day towar

Chapter 130: Little Kicks
EllieThe baby was kicking. Ellie stopped the work she was doing at her desk in her office to rest her hand against her abdomen and feel the thumps against her palm. While she could certainly feel the little heels against the inside of her, as the baby seemed to be playing some sort of drum solo on her internal organs, she liked to feel the reverberations against her hand as well. It was remarkable to her that such a small person buried inside of her beneath so many layers could make him or herself known so forcefully. They had decided not to find out whether or not they were having a boy or a girl. Now that she was almost twenty weeks along, Ellie could've found out whether she was going to have a son or a daughter. She and River had given it a lot of thought and discussed it to great length but finally decided to wait. While they both were anxious to know whether or not the curse would be broken, they didn't want to put any unnecessary stress on the situation. Whether or not it was
