“Because I know Ash... and I’ll also be there. Give me a minute.” I rushed to our room and placed Meri next to AJ then I rushed back out and joined the other humans on the steps.Josh rushed in and back out with a bowl of popcorn. I stared at him confused. He shrugged his shoulders, “Hey, if it’s going to be a show better than the Royal Rumble I need popcorn.”Ann laughed, “You sure can pick them Lee.”“Okay Ben, are you ready?” Ash asked loosening up his body like a boxer would before a fight. Ben gave me a long look and I could feel his fear. “She’s not going to help you Ben,” he taunted, crouching down and holding his arms out, silver slowly sipping into his eyes.“Don’t worry Ben, he’s exhausted.” I yelled out.Ash laughed. “Actually, after last night I feel rejuvenated.”“What happened last night?” Josh asked.

“No way Ash.” the tremble in my voice was in sync with my thudding heart. “It would be an easy win. More than what I had.” I got off the bed and moved around the room like I had ants crawling all over me. “I don’t like the way you said that.” He turned his attention back to AJ, “Like what?” “Like you are going to make it as hard for him as it was for the human you.” “And?” And? “What if he can’t do it, are you going to make him?” He growled angrily, “My son will not be referred to as a Canl waka! He doesn’t come from a line of cowards!” “Ash, don’t do this to me. I’m not your mother. I won’t survive it! AJ is the only son we have.” I begged. Hell, Kiyo can roll in his grave if he wanted to. My son was staying alive! He went silent. I felt a little relieved he was considering it. I hope. “Lee, why is he in so much discomfort?” I stopped moving around to look at him. The kid was close to t

The ride into town was a little quiet, except for the noises that came from Ben’s one-man act show for Meri. He was getting very attached to her. I didn’t mind it. The twins would have someone of their kind to explain things that Ash and I couldn’t. That is, if Ash let him hang around for that long.Josh volunteered to drive and he did so in silence. I figured it was because I was the one seated next to him. If I had a choice I would have sat behind and enjoyed Ben’s show with Meri, but Maria insisted on it because of my bad back.He looked at me a few times like he wanted to say something, and then his face would harden and he’d look straight ahead. I didn’t know what to do or say. His comment in the house had made things a little awkward. He couldn’t possibly still have feelings for me! There was nothing I could offer him, and nothing I wanted from him except his friendship. I had Ash for everything else.“Josh s

We got home a lot happier than we left. Ben had managed to get a few phone numbers and Josh had gone straight home from the mall. It was getting easier not having him around while he was still stuck in his rut. I wasn’t trying to be cold or selfish, I just didn’t have the energy to deal with his drama.Ash had finally found Baku, and bringing Josh into the equation again was just going to create some unnecessary tension.Billy and Joe laughed at Ben’s expense when he told them about his hunting expedition. They too couldn’t believe that he’d managed to stay a virgin through his teen years with his hyper intense hormones. But Ben didn’t let them get him down. He’d accomplished hitting on women, successfully, and he was proud of himself.I was proud of him! Ten phone numbers in two hours. I must admit, women may be suckers for babies, but Ben had a few things going for him. He was easy on the eyes, he had this cute naivety

Ben gave me a tight, embarrassed smile before he rushed off and sat in between the twins.  “So he can only survive on human blood?” I prayed the answer to that question was no.“He can feed on animals. He did the first time we went hunting together.”Ben nodded, “Dears taste better than cows.”“Good to know,” I said, “So what was the problem?”“With all the training and phasing he was losing more blood than what he was taking in.”Maria huffed, wiping the baby food off her sweater, “So why human blood?”Ash pulled me to the couch and hugged me against him, “I wasn’t taking any chances just in case the damage we did was too extent for self-healing.”“You heal faster with human blood.” I utter absently. My eyes were still on Ben. He looked like his old childish self, staring and laughing at the twins. It was like him go
