Chapter 131 : His Next Move

JaxonI sighed and rubbed my temples in frustration, unable to focus on the documents in front of me. My allies and I had resorted to sending faxes as a way of communicating between gangs–we couldn't risk Marino hacking us and intercepting our plans. Teddy was pretty good at his job and even he had advised us to keep it as low-tech as we could, just an extra precaution to ensure Marino wouldn't see us coming. The fight I'd had with Sara was still playing on my mind. I regretted saying that I was doubting her loyalty, but at the same time, that's how I was starting to feel. She wouldn't stop trying to strike up a treaty with Marino, and it was rubbing me the wrong way. I couldn't help but feel slightly insecure about it.It wasn't like me to feel insecure but fuck… I would be lying if I said it wasn't getting to me. She liked Marino more than she should and I had to wonder just how far that feeling went. How deep it went. What I really hated was feeling like Sara wasn't on

Chapter 132 : Nothing Can Tear Us Apart

Sara I felt terrible about arguing with Jaxon over Antonio. Jaxon was only trying to keep me safe. And the more I thought about it, the more I realized that Antonio really wasn’t such a great guy anyway. He had held me hostage. He had killed Cynthia. And while Cynthia definitely wasn’t one of my favorite people, that didn’t mean she deserved to die. It was probably wrong of me to get jealous about Cynthia too. I just couldn't help it sometimes because of everything I had gone through with her.I decided that I would make him dinner to apologize. I wasn’t the world’s greatest cook, so I brought in help. It turned out that Teddy, in addition to being a world-class hacker, was a gourmet cook too. I didn't know how he found the time, honestly. But I sure was grateful for the help. "Now the thing you want to do with tomatoes is to make sure you use salt," Teddy said, and he sliced one for the salad. "It brings out their flavor. Not too much, just enough to season it." This was

Chapter 133 : The Deverioux Professional Development Fund

Jaxon I had to meet with my guys to figure out our next moves. The Marino situation wasn’t going away anytime soon, and that cocksucker was on my last nerve with his shit. The fact that I’d blown up most of his estate didn’t exactly endear me to him, I was sure. I needed to know what was happening on his end of things. I’d had Tori undercover for a while now, and she had agreed to meet with us to give an update on his operations. This time we had lunch at this little bistro, The Crosswinds, after hours. The owner owed me a favor, and I needed a place away from prying eyes, so it worked out well. "Thanks for meeting with us Tori," I told her, taking a sip of my white wine. "I want you to know that your efforts have not gone unnoticed. You dealing with those assholes in an undercover capacity really goes above and beyond, and I appreciate it." Tori had really done a lot for us, at no small risk to herself. She was still living in the apartment I set up for her, and pretend

Chapter 134 : Types of Magic

Sara My husband was looking particularly sexy. Maybe it was because we had finally cleared the air between us. Maybe it was his broad shoulders, or the way his shirt opened at the throat, revealing a perfect expanse of skin waiting to be kissed. I couldn’t be sure of why, but when I stared into his stormy gray eyes I felt mesmerized. He was magic. We were magic. He leaned in for a kiss, and my senses went into overdrive. I was overwhelmed by the feel of him, the taste of him. Even his scent drove me wild. The feeling of him against me was both heaven and hell. I wanted it all, I needed it all. I couldn’t stand it anymore, I had to have him. "I love you," he said, and he ran his hands through my hair. "I need you, Sara. You are the most important thing to me. I will do anything for you." I wondered if that included letting me rip his clothes off, and decided that there was nothing wrong with asking. "Prove it," I told him with a teasing smile. "I need you. Please Jaxon,

Chapter 135 : A Chat with the Queen

JaxonEverything about Antonio Marino still made me sick and furious. It was still hard to move beyond knowing this guy tried to steal my wife and my business. But ultimately I knew I could no longer deny that Sara was right. I could see that continuing to fight in the current war would only leave everything a wasteland. I might succeed in destroying him, but there’d be nothing left of me or my business to continue. There’d be nothing left of the city to control anyway. I paced around the open floor of the factory, thinking and weighing my options. Max and James sat quietly at the table in the center of the room, whispering quietly with each other. I knew they had grown impatient, but I hadn’t come up with an answer. Was I really considering settling? Was I really ready to strike a deal with this child? I knew it might be the only way, I knew it was probably the right thing to do, but still, it felt like giving up. I had to admit that Marino was smart. He had a strong head f

Chapter 136 : I Want Her Here

Sara "Do you think this is going to work?" I whispered against Jaxon’s shoulder. I liked our plan, and I couldn’t see another solution, but I didn’t like the idea of having to trust Marino. He’d already proved himself a snake. I couldn’t believe there was a time I thought he wasn’t so bad. "I don’t know, but I agree with you that we don’t have many other choices. If this goes too badly, we might have to more seriously consider our other plan of leaving and settling somewhere else." I daydreamed momentarily about where we could go. Somewhere sunnier and with more beaches sounded nice. But all my friends were here. Jaxon’s mom and his life were here. I couldn’t see us really leaving. I glanced up at Jaxon, and it seemed the same thought crossed his mind too. It was hard not to let the overwhelming feeling of hopeless anxiety take over. I cuddled closer to his shoulder. He wrapped his arms tighter around me. I let myself be comforted by the strong muscles of his arms. "W

Chapter 137 : A Delicate Situation

Jaxon I held Sara closely. I could hardly stand to see her like this. I had worked so hard to get her back after her first phase of darkness. I thought I hated Marino before and wanted to kill him for flirting with her. Now I couldn’t control the disdain I felt. I couldn’t believe he would do this to her. He was beyond a monster, but I knew I had no choice. I had to talk to him, settle things, and make peace. If I went in there guns blazing, Sloan might pay the price for that. I wouldn’t make Sara go through that. It now went against everything within me, but I knew it had to be done. "I promise I’ll get her back and we’ll make things safe again. I won’t let anything happen to her." Sara sat up now and looked at me with hollow, glazed-over eyes. "I can’t keep living like this, Jaxon. I can’t keep constantly worrying if everyone I love will be safe and alive the next day. It’s hard enough knowing what you do. I worry every day that you might not come back… but now… I k

Chapter 138 : Unforeseen Disaster

Sara I woke up in a panic. I felt cold and sweaty. I couldn’t remember my dream, but it had left me losing my senses in fear. My body was still shaking slightly. I reached over instinctively for Jaxon, but my hand hit his pillow. He wasn’t there. "Jaxon?" I called out softly. I tried to assure myself it was just a dream, but I still felt panic that I might alert some strange killer out to hurt me. I kept glancing at the door expecting Marino to come through. "Jaxon?" I carefully got out of bed and moved to the bathroom, looking for him, but the space was empty. Everything looked undisturbed. I looked in the closet in a pathetic worried moment. I was relieved to find no one there. I tried to think more rationally, but jitters still ran up my spine. I crept to the hall and down the stairs. The whole house seemed quiet and empty. I couldn’t hear any of the maids or kitchen staff either. I didn’t see any of the normal guards around. Where was everyone? "Jaxon?" I called a

Chapter 139 : Marino Doesn't Have Long

JaxonEverything hurt, and I felt as if several bones were broken. I tried to remember exactly what happened. I tried to remember what Sara and I were talking about. What were we doing in the car together? I shifted and snapped something in my shoulder. Fuck. Abruptly, it all came flooding back. My memories played back in slow motion reverse. I blacked out. Glass and metal were shattering and smashing together. The car was caving inward. There was a truck, some kind of big green truck headed towards us. I remembered the panic, wanting to reach for Sara but not having time. I couldn’t see his face, but it had to be him. Of course, it was him. Antonio Marino. That motherfuck had just tried to kill us. That could have been a risky move in this business regardless, much less when we were trying for peace arrangements. I would have almost admired his tenaciousness, except that his bullheaded arrogance almost killed my wife. My wife. Sara. I turned to look at her now as I strug

Chapter 140 : Could Marino Be This Cowardly?

SaraI felt like I was spinning, I wanted to throw up. I knew I was still, but I felt like I was in a dark tunnel and everything was swirling in a nauseating tornado. I groaned uncomfortably and felt everything in my body ache. My head throbbed like I had recently had a jackhammer pounding on it. "Sara?" Jaxon called out before I opened my eyes. I smiled, happy he was alive and here. "Are you awake?" I forced my eyes open and took a second to get a clear vision of the room. I wasn’t in the car anymore. I was in a hospital room, lying in a bed, and I noticed I was now wearing nothing but a hospital gown. I turned to my left to see Jaxon sitting there. He had a wrap around his shoulder, some bruises and cuts, but otherwise he looked fine. "You’re alive," I mumbled, relieved. He chuckled at me. "Was that in question? You’re the one passed out in a hospital bed," he reminded me. I scoffed. "You were unconscious when the car landed on its side. I tried to wak
