“You're dismissed”
“What on earth is this rubbish!”, Stanford shouted, throwing the tablet on the floor causing it to shatter. Donovan was shocked. He thought he had completely erased any traces of the post forgetting one thing, Fred, Mr. Stanford’s assistant. The man had assisted Mr. Smith for over fifteen years. He started out as an intern till he became a paid employee. The only thing Fred loved more than his job was Donovan’s. He would do practically anything to get him kicked out of the office. “What is this?”, Stanford said between gritted teeth. Donovan sat in stunned disbelief occasionally throwing glances at Catherine who looked petrified. Was this his chance to get rid of her? Or would there be a backlash? With careful contemplation, he spoke softly. Donovan had to think carefully. He pondered for a while, trying to arrange his thoughts and if possible, his words. “We took care of it already,” his answer seemed to throw Stanford into a temporary frenzy. “I asked what this is Davis!”, he w

“A week?”
Who was Davis? And why did his name cause Donovan to shiver? There was something different about him, an eerie glow.“Cathy!” Ruby, called out. Catherine was in her usual routine today, staring out of her window. Ruby got back to the city the night before right after a distress call from Catherine, explaining the ordeal she had been through for the past week. She booked a late flight before the end of her call with Catherine. “Flora!”, she yelled again. Catherine jerked, hauled back into the present by the high-pitched voice. “I told you to stop doing that. You know the amount of emission those cars produce?”, Ruby scolded. Cathy knew she wouldn’t hear the end of it, so she quickly moved away from the window and stood facing her. “You ready?”, Ruby asked. Cathy let out a breath before saying “Yes”.Catherine smoothed out her pants carefully, trying her possible best not to stain the pearl white beauty. She knew how much Donovan hated wrinkles, he could cringe if his pants were cre

“Take a weapon”
Catherine caught herself smiling for the rest of the day. The feeling of being powerful must be a nice one to have. She stared at her ceiling, observing the lights she had hung changing colors. To her that was how Donovan was, unstable. “How didn’t I get fired?” she wondered. “Cathy! Cathy!” Catherine had completely drifted. She caught her self doing that sometimes, daydreaming. Ruby’s voice had barged into Catherine’s concentration. “Bro,” Ruby yelled gesturing towards Catherine’s window which was wide open. “Close the freaking window, it’s raining Catherine quickly shuffled to the other part of the room to close the window. “Hi Rubs, when’d you get back?” “A few minutes ago,” Ruby was aggravated. “What’s up?” “Nothing,” she waved her hands, frustrated. “It doesn’t look like nothing” “Well, since you asked,” Ruby sat down and taped the bed, gesturing for Cathy to sit down. “Adam proposed!” she had tears in her eyes revealing the giant stone on her fingers to Catherine. “Then charge it”
“He’s dead! If you ever in your life snoop into my family’s business again, you’ll regret it.” Donovan had been pretty edgy lately. Why was she poking her nose where it didn’t need to be? He needed to get rid of her and quick. It was only a matter of time till the Smith’s dirty laundry was aired out in the open. “I can’t let that happen, not now, not ever!” He walked back to his room. The house brought back memories, not the kind he would like to remember. It was their vacation home. The whole family came to Korea every summer. Keila was born there as well. She was born at a small hospital very close to a beach they visited often. A lucky child she was, most children were said to have been born on the beach. Donovan’s name was changed after the age of nine. His grandfather wanted to trace of Davis Smith in his household. He remembered vividly how his grandfather chose him to be groomed for the family business instead of Nigel. It was during the summer, Davis and Rachel had a huge f

“Where were you?”
She was exasperated. Catherine had been walking for a while. “Did he say two blocks or three?”, she spoke under her breath as she tried to find the store Donovan talked about. “Shit,” she groaned frustrated. “Where’s the damn store?,” Catherine walked around for a bit. “How’d I forget my charger?”. She increased her pace as she heard fast footsteps approaching. “I thought Korea was a safe country”. Catherine was practically running through every street she came across. The footsteps stopped abruptly then someone appeared in front of her. “Why are you running?”, it was Kenny. She sighed with relief. “What are you doing here? I thought you were a thief,” she explained. “How’d you get this far? The convenience store is way back there,” he pointed in the other direction. Catherine narrowed her eyes to see the very bright that shone from the store. “Yeah, must have missed it”. “There’s another one not too far from here,” he held Catherine’s hand leading her down the street. This store w

“Tomorrow?”
The party was moved to a larger auditorium. They drove for few minutes to another location off campus. It was properly decorated. For the brief moment Catherine was there, it was said that there were speculations that the Smith family sponsored the event. They obviously started the rumor so it spread fast. They always loved to stand out and be recognized. Sponsoring an event got people liking out of their palm and adding non-existent categories to the award ceremony. At this point if there was a hate the Smith’s group chat, Catherine would be the admin. Indistinct chatter came from all angles of this excellently decorated party venue. There was an endless display of exquisite delicacies. You could tell the party had begun when the sound of glasses clinking filled the air. Irish, Scott’s, American, Canadian, Tennessee, name it. All kinds of whiskey were present at this party. There was a mini bar with all kinds of exotic drinks, from spirits to cocktails. “What are we drinking?” Don

“Is that you Damien?”
The next morning, the movers came in early to get a head start. Catherine stayed with Ruby for the first half of the day, the other half was to be spent at a company party as Donovan’s plus one. At this point she was confused about her responsibilities. Catherine found an outfit fit for the occasion in Ruby’s closet. As usual, her go to transport means was the train. She made her way to the venue. She walked in feeling a little shy seeing as well dressed people lined the entrance. With the amount of money she spent on transportation, she was supposed to be getting weekly benefits. “Hi,” Donovan smiled. Catherine was thrown off for a second, why was he smiling? “Hello Donovan,” she formed a half smile. In one corner, a small group gathered around a grand piano, taking turns playing and singing classic songs that she had never heard. The soiree was a delightful blend of elegance and sophistication, a momentary escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Snooty people with th

“She must be crazy!”
Donovan was prepared to completely forget the night he spent with Catherine but seeing her face everyday wasn’t going to help the situation. He was completely embarrassed and hoped she didn’t remember anything about the previous night. His pride was hurt, never in his life had a lady rejected him. The look of shock on her face in the morning was his conviction that she didn’t remember anything. She just wanted to go home badly so he called for an Uber. Donovan always went to his condo when there was an event and he couldn’t get home. His apartment and home were the only places he felt comfortable in. And for someone of his status, safety was a major priority. That was also the place he took his lovers which were either celebrities or daughters of wealthy business men. “She should consider herself lucky that a person of my status drove her to a luxury apartment”, he scoffed. He had secretaries in the past who he slept with for fun whenever he wanted, when he was done, he would fire

“Make me!”
Catherine took her half-day off very seriously. Donovan had been gracious enough to give her a small break from him. A trip to the book store would make all her problems go away. Everyday for the last month, she had been religiously sending out emails to publishing companies. At least seven out of a hundred responded. And one out of the seven would be what an average person would term a positive response but they were often accompanied with negative terms and conditions. She circled through the store for a while and found some really good reads. A few minutes later she got a text from Donovan. It read; “I need you”. Her heart sunk to her feet for a moment, “I need you.” What did that mean and why did it make her smile a little? Catherine slapped herself a little, “Stop being stupid!” she yelled. She took a taxi and headed to the nearest train station. When she had gotten to the mansion, she rang the bell. There was no response. She decided to send Donovan a text which he didn’t res

“Nothing, for now”
“What does he have on us?,” Stanford asked Donovan. “Nothing, for now,” he answered. “Have you talked to Jerry?,” he inquired. “Yeah,” Donovan said nonchalantly. He was tired of explaining how he had no prior knowledge to Frank Dubel joining the race for Senator. “And he has the DA! Damn bastard,” Stanford was furious. “Well, he is his uncle,” Donovan said, Stanford rolled his eyes, “They’re just well connected, doesn’t mean we’re any less”. He sat quiet for a while. “Fred,” he summoned. “They have too many people in legislature,” Donovan explained. “I know, but we have business connections. The grand judge is my friend, we still have this,” Stanford was concerned but had no intention of showing it. “How’s the campaign team doing?” “They’re doing alright. Trying to come up with manifestos,” Donovan spoke with confidence. He knew the team he hired was more than capable of handling the situation. “We need something persuasive, something they’ve never heard before”. Donovan no
