Chapter 31 – Preparations
RHETT We had gone back to Oliver and Petra’s little underground hideout, after looking at what we were up against getting to the tree. Any shifters would be useless, including Finn and Mason as the pheromones from the demon dogs would eventually cloud their minds, making them easy prey when they became delirious. Which is why I would be enlisting the changelings. Apparently, they too were not affected by the monsters. I had already witnessed their thirst for killing and they were skilled fighters. If I was going to reach the tree, we would need them. As Oliver said, the only way they reached it last time was because of them and their help. It was decided we would wait until dusk. The reason being, that the changelings saw much better when it when it wasn’t a bright outside. I had already known that a bright light could change their appearance. Turning their grey skin to a warm, almost glowing pink and their eyes from the mustard yellow to a transparent blue. I hadn’t realized sun

Chapter 32 – Monster Mass
LENEVE The afternoon sun was just settling behind the tall green buildings. Their shapes were hardly recognizable with the overgrowth of nature. I could only imagine what a beautiful city this must have been in its day. The humans that filled the streets and the shops that must have been a sight during that period of time in our history. Over thirty changelings walked behind us as we traveled on foot between the high structures that nature had reclaimed and down the green street of tall grass and moss. The atmosphere between us was palpable. The changelings slinked in silence, only the footfalls of the shifters and Rhett could be heard and even they were almost muffled by the foliage beneath our feet. I daren’t look at Rhett but I could feel his eyes on me. It was like a heat slowly burning into me. The further we walked the more heat I felt. I didn’t get him. He mated me but hadn’t said more than two full sentences since. I would say something but I didn’t know what to say. I di

Chapter 33 – Falling
RHETT Hesitantly, I cut Leneve’s palm, the sight of her blood running from the open wound and spilling over her hand makes me sick. My gut twists and my heart pounds. I didn’t like seeing her hurt. She peers up at me, unwavering by the cut I just made. Her eyes hold mine and I drop her hand feeling the warmth of her leave me instantly. Watching her watch me I dig the blade into my palm making a vertical cut. Warm blood seeps from the wound and without words we both lift our hands and place them on the wide girth of the tree below the writing. It seemed like such a simple act, yet I felt the connection between us as the cold dark bark met our bloodied palms. It was a strange sensation. First came warmth, a creeping, satisfying, gradual heat that tickled my palm. Then came the gentle burn which traveled up my arm and to my chest. My heart began to beat wildly with the prickle of arousal as mine and Leneve’s blood smeared on the black trunk. The sensation, though primitive, held a dee

Chapter 34 – The Life of the Tree
LENEVE Silently I fell in darkness until I hit the ground with a hard crash, after falling for what seemed like forever. I could still feel where Rhett had gripped my hand tightly and from the force of gravity pulling me down, my hand was ripped from his. I rubbed my shoulder and thigh which had taken the bulk of my weight when I hit the ground, scrambling to stand on two feet. There was a pulse in the air and that strange voice that seemed drowned out. “Rhett?” I call out into the darkness. I wait for a response and receive none. My eyes slowly begin to adjust in the dark and I can see I’m in a round cave, surrounded by tunnels and strange small holes. “Oliver?” I tried the rogue’s name. Still no answer. I look up from where I fell only to see a jagged ceiling of rocks. “What the…” I say to myself confused. The thrumming pulse feels closer, heavier. I knew I couldn’t stay here. I needed to find Rhett. I look at the tunnels that lead to goddess knows where and, on a whim, I pick

Chapter 35 – Maze
RHETT Down one tunnel that leads to another, opening up into a cavern of stalagmites. It was a maze down here, but I kept chasing the light, just when I thought I had caught up to Leneve, the light would disappear down another dark turn. “Hunter!” Oliver yelled as I ran towards the soft glow once again. “Hunter!” He called louder, finally making me stop and turn to him. “What?” I asked abruptly, angered that he was holding me up from finding her. I couldn’t describe what I was feeling but it was like an urgency to find Leneve. I didn’t know if she was okay or not. I knew she could take care of herself, but I needed eyes on her. If not for myself then for her friends… her family. How would her father react if I had gotten her killed? My hands begin to shake. My mind was frantic, not understanding why she couldn’t hear me, why she didn’t stop. My fists clenched and unclenched as I tried to determine which way to turn when the light disappeared. My insides twisted and when the light

Chapter 36 – A Beast for a Beast
RHETT At my back I hear the grunts of Oliver's fighting, the hissing and piercing squeal of the third snake, I concentrate on Leneve and getting to her. My sword drips with black blood at the ready to cut through the thick vines that bind her. “I’m coming,” I begin to tell her when I watch her eyes turn a shade of green, I’ve never seen and the panic I had seen in her orbs intensifies as her iris widen. Stifled screams come from her gagged mouth, and she twists and turns with a look of dread. Like a train I’m hit from the side, I didn’t even see it coming, I was so focused on Leneve. My body is thrown across the chamber, hitting the far wall where I slide down and slump to the floor. My sword clatters as it falls from my hand, bouncing on the rocky sides. I shake the sting of ache from my body and slowly hoist myself up looking for the source of what pounded me. Just as I clambered to my feet, I saw it. Tree trunk legs attached to hooves, large and bulky arms, bigger than Mathias,

Chapter 37 – Why Anything
LENEVE Once the bright brilliant light had died down, we found ourselves standing in the darkness of the tree’s cavity once more. My hand was still in Rhett’s, and he held it tightly. I didn’t want him to ever let go. Unfortunately, he did. I felt the loss of contact, like icy wind the coldness of his absence swept up my arm sending a shiver down my spine. “The dagger?” I question wanting to make sure our efforts were not for nothing. Rhett shifts Oliver's body and feels for the dagger that he stuffed in his belt, which amazingly was the only thing holding the shreds of his pants together. Appreciatively my eyes wander over his semi-naked form, and I recall how he felt against me and inside me. Was it wrong that I wanted him to take me again if even he was for his own personal use? He produces the mythical weapon and holds it up, the light provided from outside the tree faintly showed us the object, “Got it.” He says with resolve. “Rhett!” Finn's yelling could be heard outside of

Chapter 38 - Toxic
RHETT Silence followed when I shut the door to the small room, that joined with Leneve’s, behind me. While the changelings celebrated their victory and Oliver was being tended to, we shifters retired to our rooms. I hadn’t seen Leneve since Finn had carried her off. It was for the best. Finn had notified me that Leneve was in her room with the twin Lycans and that he had also contacted Mathias. After finding out Leneve, Oliver and I hadn’t actually moved from the position of entering the doorway into the tree, I began to wonder just how powerful that old woman, Yggdrasil really was. And if everything she put us through was just a ruse so she could be set free. Mason seemed to think that she had been trapped in there and by removing the dagger, it had allowed her to leave. *Hunji, I'm sure you know by now, but I have the dagger.* I open up a mind link to the Asiarian wolf and feel the connection right away. *I have been informed.* I hear the reply come through as I settle on the sm

Chapter 39 – Good Girl
LENEVE For a human, time moves quickly. This realm moves quickly. For Lycans, time is slow. Forever changing. When we connect with our beast, we become one. We do not share a mind like the other shifters. We have no spirit animal. We are the animal. The animal is us. We imprint like the bears. We mark like the wolf. And we fuck like cats. And a Lycan mates for life. I was angry and hurt. Jealous when I found the changeling naked in his room. He knew I was his mate and yet he was still going to take another to his bed. Did the kiss mean nothing? Did saying ‘mine,’ verbally claiming me, mean nothing to him? Or that it was because of me his beast finally emerged? I had tried. I truly did. I exposed my vulnerability to him and still, he coldly pushed me away like I was nothing. Like I meant nothing to him. He had even been aroused by the young female. The anger of the situation and his easy dismal of me spread throughout. It climbed up and over me until I felt my beast and magic twin

Chapter 40 – Deep Thoughts
RHETT Grogginess hits me as my eyes slowly open, and immediately I feel the weight of Leneve’s body sprawled across mine. We hadn't even managed to make it to the small bed. We had crashed on the floor, wrapped around one another. I barely remember falling asleep and shifting her body to lay on mine. Visions of our night played through my head as I listened to her softly breathe. The things I said, the way I acted. What I drove her to do. I feel a pinch in my heart at the thought of Leneve trying to break our bond. How much would that have hurt her if she had completed her efforts? I didn’t want to think about the pain she would have caused herself. I had driven her to that. Me and my own selfishness. But it wasn’t without reason. In an attempt to protect my own heart from being shattered again, I had, without thought, broken hers. Strangely, I can't stand to see the little Lycan hurt, yet I am the one who has probably caused her the most pain. Emotions stir inside me, and I repla
