Chapter 1

It was midnight. I was sound asleep when loud, aggressive pounding on my front door rudely woke me.Groggy and annoyed, I barely cracked the door open before a bucket of foul-smelling water splashed all over me. The icy shock jolted me awake. The stench made me gag before I looked up in fury.Standing in front of me were my neighbors from across the hall. The face of Vera Morri, an old woman, twisted into a horrifying scowl as she planted her hands on her hips and shrieked. “You wretched girl! How dare you try to kill my precious grandson! Let me tell you something, if anything happens to him, I’ll kill you!”Next to her, her son, Gregg Morri, a beer-bellied man holding the empty bucket, glared at me with rage. “You left those shoes that were infected with athlete’s foot at your door on purpose, didn’t you? You’re trying to make my wife lose the baby! You better compensate us!”Behind them stood a woman, Kerry Morri, whose face flushed and contorted as she desperately tried to b

Ever since I moved in, that family across the hall had been stealing anything they could get their hands on.No wonder I found it odd when I first moved in. No one in the entire building kept shoes or umbrellas outside their doors. It turned out that everyone was just trying to protect themselves from this bizarre family. They really loved stealing. It even included my doormat or any food deliveries I did not pick up immediately. They did not even spare my bras, panties, and socks that were hanging out to dry on the rooftop! When the police paid them a visit after receiving surveillance footage from me, Vera dramatically threw herself to the floor and started convulsing. She really deserved a Best Actress Award for that. The officer just sighed like he had seen it all before and advised me to move out if I could. I was speechless. One day, the trash I had left by my door had been scattered everywhere. That was the last straw. I borrowed a pair of shoes from my friend, who was

The next morning, I dragged myself to Riverstone Hospital. My face was sporting two massive pimples.Claire Gavin, one of my coworkers, immediately noticed and looked over. “Maddie, what’s wrong? You look awful.”I sighed. “Don’t even ask. I was furious all night.”Before she could press for more details, Dr. Thompson, the director, stormed in. His expression was dark with anger as he stared at me. “Dr. Young, get downstairs and take care of this immediately! Do you have any idea how bad this has gotten?”I had a bad feeling. I hurried down to the outpatient area and saw a massive crowd gathering there.Above them was an enormous banner with bold, eye-catching letters.[Maddie Young Lacks Medical Ethics! Unfit to Practice Medicine!]My eyes widened in shock. Before I could react, Vera, my eccentric neighbor, appeared right in front of me.Her trembling hand pointed straight at me as the sagging flesh on her face quivered with each word. She spat out her accusations with venomou

That evening, I moved into an empty apartment downstairs. After setting up my phone, I eagerly opened the surveillance app.Danny wobbled across the hall like an excited child. He began doodling on their door while knocking rhythmically. The door creaked open, but before it fully swung out, a voice came first.“Finally bringing the money? Took you long enough!”Just as soon as he finished saying that, the door swung wide open. A few large globs of some unidentifiable black goo splattered across Gregg’s face.Gregg’s eyelids twitch uncontrollably in shock. Before he could yell, Danny jumped up gleefully and shouted, “Energy waves! Pew pew pew!”With each shout, more globs of sticky black goo shot into the apartment. In no time, Vera and her pregnant daughter-in-law, Kerry, were covered in the same disgusting mess. The entire world seemed to freeze for a moment, but soon, the rising waves of panic and fury were so intense I could feel them through the screen.Danny, however, r

That night, I had a great night’s sleep. The next morning, as soon as I woke up, I bolted up to the rooftop. For God’s sake! Every single piece of clothing was stolen! Not even a shoelace left behind!Just then, Mrs. Warren appeared out of nowhere. There was a sly grin on her usually kind face.“Dr. Young, don’t worry. I threw in three pairs of my underwear and eight bras. That’ll be plenty for them to share!”I stared at her, stunned for a moment, before giving her a big thumbs-up. “Mrs. Warren, that’s genius! Oh, and please just call me Maddie.”She took a step back. “Maddie, keep your distance from me. Don’t worry, once that awful family surrenders, I’ll move out. I won’t be causing you any trouble!”“Mrs. Warren, what are you talking about? I…” Before I could finish, my phone started buzzing.I opened it and saw a flood of angry messages in the building’s group chat.Kerry had launched an all-out attack. [Attention, everyone! Be careful! The lunatic who moved in across f

After I messaged the tenants, the group chat immediately exploded with comments that were aimed squarely at that troublesome family. It was no surprise. Vera’s family had rubbed everyone the wrong way. The tenants did not hold back.[I think someone’s just spreading lies. That young man’s perfectly fine. I’m not blind!][Exactly! Maybe they should focus on living their own lives instead of meddling in others. They’re so petty, it’s honestly pathetic.][If you ask me, they’re just mad they can’t steal from him, so now they’re smearing him!]…Reading these comments, I felt the anger in my chest dissipate completely. A sense of relief washed over me.Seeing all the tenants turn against her, Kerry shouted into the group chat in a furious voice message. “You idiots! Have you all lost your minds? You’re insane! Let’s see if you’re still laughing when that lunatic shows up at your door and chops you into pieces!”However, her angry rant was quickly drowned out by a wave of rebukes

Chapter 7

After the brutal fight, I transferred one hundred dollars to Victor as a token of gratitude. However, Victor stubbornly refused to take a single cent and insisted on returning the money to me.With no other choice, I decided to go upstairs to speak with him directly. Yet, as I stood waiting for the elevator, I suddenly heard police officers’ voices coming from above, followed by loud, wailing cries.“You have to help us, officers! My daughter-in-law is in terrible pain because of the stress they caused!” “That’s right! My wife’s stomachache came out of nowhere. It’s definitely because of the foot fungus! Arrest them now!” “Ahhh! Honey, it hurts so much! The pain is unbearable!”…I could not stand listening to their nonsense any longer. Before the police knocked on the door, I headed upstairs and walked straight over to them.I coldly glared at the three troublemakers and said, “Leave them alone. Talk to me instead. If there’s an issue, go to the hospital!”“You witch! You f

Chapter 8

I treated myself to a nice dinner and enjoyed a luxury steak before wiping my mouth in satisfaction. When I got home, I ran into that ridiculous family yet again.Kerry had not even stayed in the hospital for her surgery!I ducked behind a tree to avoid them. I silently resolved myself to call someone tomorrow to kick this entire family out for good. They were on a month-to-month lease anyway. I could have them gone anytime I wanted.Just as I was thinking about the battle I would have to fight tomorrow, Gregg suddenly slapped his wife, who was still hunched over in pain. It knocked her to the ground. He barked, “You useless woman! You couldn’t even keep the baby!” Vera, who was standing beside them, also gave her a kick. “Marrying you was the biggest mistake! And you want surgery? Dream on! Go sell your kidney or your blood if you want treatment, you infertile trash!”However, as soon as Vera said that, her son shoved her hard and sent her tumbling to the ground. She looked up

Chapter 9

Early the next morning, before the sun was even up, I contacted a moving company. I was ready to kick that entire family out for good.I was exhausted. Vera had spent the whole night banging on doors, crying, and whining about her situation. Her incessant wailing had filled the group chat with complaints from the other tenants. With a cold, determined expression, I headed upstairs. I was fully prepared to order them to pack their things and get out immediately. However, before I could make it to their door, the doors of the elevator slid open.A group of people came out all at once.I recognized several familiar faces.I froze in place. Were these not the same battle-hardened reinforcements Vera had brought in before?Their faces were twisted with rage. Their eyes were filled with hatred. They surrounded Vera and slapped her hard across the face several times.“You didn’t tell us the man across the hall had HIV! We’ve all been infected!”“You wretched old hag, you’ll die a mis

Chapter 10

The police arrived fully armed and promptly took everyone involved into custody. The once-arrogant man was a pitiful sight. His body was covered in bruises and not a single patch of unscathed skin. His wife, however, had managed to avoid the worst. I heard she had hidden in the bedroom during the chaos. Even so, she seemed mentally unhinged. She was trembling uncontrollably and scratching herself from time to time.Peeking out from under her pants was a pair of floral red underwear. It was clearly Mrs. Warren’s.I shook my head and focused on calming the terrified tenants. I reassured them that they could all move to the building next door, which also belonged to my family, while I arranged for this one to be thoroughly disinfected.Still visibly shaken, the tenants nodded in agreement.By evening, the entire building was empty. I sent a message to my father and asked him to have the building sealed off completely. It was not that it could not be lived in anymore. It was just
