The War of the Royals - Chapter 51

MADDIE POV I wanted to chase after Josh. So incredibly bad. Alas, alpha duties and pack politics require me to do my duty first. UGH! Goddess, I hate putting on the diplomatic face, but it’s part of the job. I pick up my phone and make the call to Jean-Claude’s alpha, Alpha Pierre. Alpha Pierre is rightly upset with his beta for his actions and words. Even more so when I explain that he is no longer welcome on Blue Meadow territory, for any reason. Our packs have a long-standing alliance and while I am not demanding Jean-Claude be demoted or kicked out of his pack, I do warn that his behavior today will end that alliance if Josh walks away due to today’s events. Alpha Pierre is sincere in his apology and assures me that Jean-Claude will be punished for his transgressions. I thank him for his time, and I agree to his request of having dinner together so he and his mate, Nicolette, can meet Josh when and if, he takes on his role as Luna. I take a minu

JOSH POV “Goddess, I need some coffee,” Maddie says as we approach a large dining room filled with tables and a ton of people. As we enter, the room goes silent, and I gulp in fear as all eyes turn to us. I don’t know why. It’s not like I’m not used to large crowds of people watching my every move. But this just feels… different. Much more different than playing pro football in a stadium on national TV. I register that Maddie is squeezing my hand just a little firmer than before. I look down into her beautiful face and see her smile at me. “It’s okay. I’m right here with you.” I nod and return her smile. How could I not? “Coffee sounds great!” I agree, trying to shake the unease I am feeling. “I was promised food too, Alpha.” I remind her and I see her eyes dilate and flash brightly. She really does like it when I call her Alpha. “Yes, Josh. Food and coffee are on the agenda.” Maddie licks her lips, and I can hear the lust in her voice.

JOSH POV I have to hide my smile and a chuckle behind my hands as I turn away from the group. I know laughing is the absolute WRONG reaction here, but I can’t help it, it’s funny as fuck. Granted, if they were my kids, I’d probably be exasperated too, but they’re not, so I’ll enjoy my glimpse into this humorous side of the ranked family life. It honestly doesn’t seem that much different than the life Jenna and I had growing up. I look over at Maddie, not being able to keep my eyes off of her sexiness for long, and she’s doing a much better job at hiding her amusement than I am. But the laughter is still lighting up her eyes. I lean over and kiss her lips softly, “I like seeing you like this.” I tell her quietly. “And what way is that?” She asks, while a shocked expression dons her face. “Happy. Amused. Relaxed. I haven’t gotten to see much of those emotions on your face yet.” She blushes at me with a little embarrassment. Madd

The War of the Royals - Chapter 54

JOSH POV “In high school, my best friend was a foster kid. He was the starting running back for our football team and had already been scouted by colleges, just like I had. We were slated to attend Ohio State together, both on scholarship. We had our coaches and recruiters pull some strings to get us roomed together too. “You know high school kids, naive with big stars in our eyes. We had our entire college and pro lives figured out, together. He spent more time at my house than he did with his foster family, as he didn’t like it there much. He said his foster parents fought a lot. Jay was also dating my younger sister, Jenna.” I sigh, thinking back about Jay. His memory is always accompanied by incredibly conflicting emotions. “On the night of our last high school football game, Jay arrived late and agitated. I asked him several times what was up, and he just waved me off. I thought maybe he and Jenna had gotten into a fight… my sister was, and stil

The War of the Royals - Chapter 55

JOSH POV “Learning about the foster system and it’s ineffectiveness is the reason I chose to get my degrees in social work and early childhood development. When I was being scouted for pro teams during my junior year of college, I decided that fifty percent of my first pro contract was going to be set aside to start The Jay Taylor Advocacy Foundation for Fosters and Orphans. Other than being listed as the founder, my name isn’t a highlight. I wanted the foundation to be about the kids and their needs, not me. Not my fame. “I still host fundraisers and bring support for them as my charity of choice, of course, and I still donate too. But I don’t run it. I have an Executive Director who does that for me. She’s a kick-ass business litigator who was once part of the foster care system too. Dottie has first-hand knowledge of what is needed and knows how to fight for those needs. “I volunteer as an advocate when I have the time, but again, I don’t want my

MADDIE POV “Sweet pea, put me down. I can walk,” Mama quietly objects to being carried by me. Granted, I’m probably not as comfortable to be leaning against compared with Daddy. He has an amazing torso for cuddling, plus the mate bond helps with the comfort level. But this isn’t the first time I’ve needed to carry Mama over the years and I’m sure it won’t be the last. “Nope. We’re going to my office, and you are taking a much-needed nap, missy. You over did it yesterday and I won’t take any arguments from you about it.” “You’re such a stubborn child.” She huffs, knowing she won’t be able to get out of my hold, so she might as well just accept it. “Jee, wonder who I get that from?” I see a little upturn to her lips as she tries to not smile. Mama is as stubborn as they come. I guess she needed to be, being mated to Daddy. That has me thinking, “Mama, do you have any advice on how I can convince Josh to stay with me?” Mama’s sma

The War of the Royals - Chapter 57

MADDIE POV “He’s not sure he wants to stay as my Luna.” I tell Nolan quietly. “WHAT THE FUCK?!! Why the hell would he want to leave? YOU ARE HIS MATE! Doesn’t he realize how special that is? How special you are?!! He should be BEGGING you to mate and mark and have the ceremony. Does Dad know that he’s thinking of rejecting you? Do I need to come there and beat the shit out of him? NO ONE REJECTS MY SISTER! Which fucking pack is he from?! I’m declaring war and cancelling alliances!” Nolan is literally screaming at this point. I just rub my forehead in exasperation. I know I’m going to go through this exact conversation with each of my siblings. “Oh for Moon’s sake! Nolan, calm down please. There is a perfectly reasonable explanation why he’s not jumping in with both feet… he is human. A very famous human, at that. He has his entire life in the human world that he’s worked hard to build. He’s not sure he wants to give that up to move to a pack and be m

JOSH POV Tyson and I leave the packhouse and emerge into the bright sunshine. I blink a few times to let my eyes adjust and I realize Tyson is already ahead of me by a lot. Damn, that dude has a long stride. I run to catch up with him and then match my pace with his. For a while, we just walk aimlessly, not talking. It’s a nice sunny day, it’s not too cold out and I don’t mind a silent walk, at least until Tyson can organize his thoughts. Finally, he seems to decide on what he wants to say, “Josh, if you hadn’t met Mads, what were your plans for the future?” I’m a little surprised. This was not the direction I expected this conversation to go. In all reality, I expected him to threaten me again. “Well, I was hoping to get another contract. For at least one more year. I wanted to try and make it back to the Super Bowl.” “I had a feeling that was your plan with how much you and Jenna have been calling the team. Have you thought about taking

The War of the Royals - Chapter 59

MADDIE POV Daddy and Josh stay out, walking around the packhouse and the pack for a few hours. The warriors I ordered to follow them report back to me every fifteen minutes. I was originally worried that Daddy would do something to Josh, because of the possibility of his rejection. But shockingly, he didn’t. They chatted all the while, like they are old friends. At one point they shook hands like they’d come to an understanding of some sort. It is relieving on my mind that they seem to be getting along so well. After their handshake, they turned back to return to the packhouse and I expected to see them not long after, but I guess they came across some pups playing football. Josh got distracted with them. Giving pointers on how to hold and throw the ball then he got roped into playing with them. Daddy joined in. Apparently, not long after, Bruno sprinted up wanting to get in on the action as well. I swear, my Delta acts like a teenager with a bromance-crush more

The War of the Royals - Chapter 60

MADDIE POV “Back hundreds of years ago, it was common practice to mate publicly. Over the years, it took a backseat to mating in private and most of us are thankful for that now. However, there are still some who are into exhibitionism, like Maddox and Oscar. I’ve walked in on them countless times. Still, smelling arousal is quite common for wolves. Granted no one has ever smelled mine until today. Surprisingly, I’m not embarrassed by it... well, not much, anyway.” “I’ll try to curb my PDA then,” he begins to tell me, so I stop and turn to him again. “No Josh. I’m okay with it. Please don’t stop showing affection or modify your behavior because you think it’ll embarrass me. Unless it embarrasses you. Being turned on by your mate is normal and expected. I’m not embarrassed. I promise. Actually, it would be more concerning if you didn’t turn me on.” I tell him with sincerity. Josh leans down to whisper into my ear, “So, when will I be able
