A blast from the past

RYKERThe flames surrounded us like a beast, devouring everything in its path.“What is happening?” Elora asked through our mindlink, jumping to her feet. She looked around with dread filled eyes as fire engulfed the wooden walls around us. It didn’t take long before the fire spread to the wooden boards underneath our feet. “What’s going on? How could this happen?” Smoke choked the air, curling around my throat, but it wasn’t the fire that made my blood run cold.It was her. Elora stood frozen in the center of the burning room, her wide, glassy eyes darting between the collapsing beams and me. Panic twisted her delicate features. Something in me twisted as her breaths came in sharp, desperate gasps. She was scared. Terrified. As she should have been. I needed the right amount of fear from her to make her survival instincts kick in. Yet, I found her squirming so fucking irritating.“You need to calm down, Elora.”She turned to shoot me a glare. “Calm down?”she signed.“Can you

Never have to be afraid again

ELORA Was he fucking kidding me? I was the only one who could save us? Really? Didn’t he just tell me that he was going to leave me here to die, to save myself? Suddenly, for some reason, he couldn’t make it out, and I was supposed to help the both of us out of this?! The heat pressed against my skin like molten iron. It felt awful and unbearable. I had been trapped in many places in my life, but a room lit up in flames had never been one of them. My breath came in shallow gasps with smoke that clogged my lungs. The fire continued to rage, crackling and roaring as it ate away at the walls, the floor, everything. It was coming at us with a speed none of us could stop. I couldn’t believe this was happening. Had he really asked someone to set the place on fire? He set this entire fucking trap for me! As I looked at Ryker, my hands trembled from the molten rage that coursed through my veins. My heart pounded viciously against the tired muscular walls of my chest. “You were goi

Nothing but a tool

RYKER I dropped my towel on the floor and let my body feel the breeze of the midnight air. A cold shower was what was needed to take my mind off everything that had happened in the last few hours. How could I have been so silly? Did my anger towards her cause me to put myself in danger? What if she wasn’t able to save us? I would have been able to contact Kiara as our wolves had a strong bond, but it would have taken a while. I heaved a sigh as I climbed into my bed. It was clear I needed to be more careful. I couldn’t let my feelings towards her get the better of me. It had put me in danger already, what was to say it wouldn’t put my people next time? They were all that mattered to me. Yet, for some twisted as fuck reason, Elora’s face wouldn’t leave my mind.Even then, as I lay in my bed, staring at the ceiling, I could still see her tear streaked face bathed in moonlight, with wind curling around her like a goddess-like extension of herself. Strong. Defiant. Beautiful. She h

Challenge accepted

ELORA I could smell him from the front of my tent. As I slowly took off my burnt dress, Sierra howled softly within me. “No, Sierra.” I scolded my wolf. “We wouldn’t be speaking to him. Not after what he did to us.”She didn’t seem to care though. She continued to make those soft purring noises, pining for him. Frustrated, I heaved a sigh and climbed into bed, making sure to face the part of my tent away from the entrance. I had to be wary of him from now on.“What does he want anyway? Has he come to try to burn down my tent now?” “Why don’t you hear him out at least?”My eyes shot open. “Hear him out?” I sat up straight, faintly annoyed. If only I could see her face to face, I’d have wanted her to look me in the eyes and repeat what she had just. “You were there, Sierra. If you hadn’t saved us, he'd have gotten us both killed! He didn’t even think of that. He hated me so much that he didn’t stop to think of what would happen if he couldn’t put away the fire.”“Maybe he’s here

Too close to me

ELORA “Challenge accepted.” The depth of his eyes threatened to bore holes into my skin, bury itself in the deepest crevices of my mind, my thoughts, my heart. I frowned when I caught myself staring at him, a strange warmth creeping down my spine. The warm air that eased from its nostrils fanned the skin of my face. I knew I had to walk away. He was too close for my good, and I had no interest in dancing with the devil. His smile had faded when I turned my back to him, retreating into my tent. The silence greeted me. Sierra must have been satisfied with talking to Ryker. I often wondered how possible it was for her to feel so strong for two people. Yet, I knew there was a difference between what we had felt for Kael, and what we felt for Ryker. And I knew which was stronger. I didn’t bother lighting a lantern. The soft glow from the golden yellow moon was enough to cast long, lonely shadows against the fabric walls.I stood for a while, arms crossed, eyes fixed on the empty spa

Something is changing

ELORA The world blinked in and out as I rolled onto my side, groaning. She stood over me with an empty stare in her eyes. I had gotten used to it because they all wore the same looks when talking to me. Only Kiara had made her dislike for me clear. “You were distracted,” she said. There was no mockery or pity in her voice. I sat up slowly, brushing dirt from my skin, and narrowed my eyes. “You think?” The brawl was over, apparently. A few warriors clapped half-heartedly before dispersing into pairs for other drills. Anya crouched in front of me, a small flask already in her hand. She helped me up and took me into my tent, then began to work on treating my injury. She dabbed a cloth into it and pressed it against the scrape on my chin. I flinched. “Stay still.” she muttered. “Would it hurt?” I asked, anxious. Her eyes lit up with a little smile. “Not too much.” I grumbled something under my breath but obeyed. She worked in silence as her fingers moved

I came undone

RYKER Elora was knocked out of training immediately it started. Caesar had the urge to go to her, to make sure she was okay, but I restrained him. Elora Valewind would never control my wolf. Not in this life, or the next. Training ran till late in the evening, before warriors settled down in groups of five, around different fires. The women had gathered together to make us a feast of roasted beef, broth, and some rice. It was one of my favorite things about having a small settlement. The spirit of community always filled my heart with joy. The fire snapped and cracked in the middle of our circle, but it did nothing to thaw the tension between us. Jarek sat to my right, his goblet clutched lazily in one hand, while Dain leaned forward. Ah. Yes. Dain. He was the one getting on my last nerves with his impatience. “We’re wasting time, Ryker. Stormrider’s patrols are thinning. Their outer walls are vulnerable. If we strike now, we can…”“No,” I cut in. My voice was final. The sil

Head held high

ELORA The sun was ruthless today. Sweat clung to my back like a second skin as I moved from one drill to the next. Due to the injury Anya had inflicted on me, my limbs were aching, but I kept my spirit steady. I didn’t allow myself to breathe, not under Ryker’s supervision. The warriors barely looked at me now. There was no longer scorn or empathy in their curious lenses. Just… tolerance. Maybe even something close to acceptance. I’d bled enough with them for that, I supposed. It was on this hot day I met them. Jarek and Dain, brothers, and Ryker’s most trusted men. Jarek could be described as a quiet storm. He was towering, but not as tall as Ryker, lean, and with that strange calm around him that only true strength could carry. I noticed the way his eyes always strayed to Anya when he thought no one was watching. But I was watching. I saw the way his expression softened around her. How he kept his distance like being close to her might undo him completely. Perhaps it already

No mercy for you

KAELMy nightmares always started the same way, but this one was different. So different. I stood in the ruins of my pack, commander of the army of Stormrider, sweating, wounded. The air was thick with smoke and the metallic stench of blood- both wet and dried. Around me, bodies of my men were scattered all over the ground like broken dolls. Some had lost their heads, some hands, some legs. Intestines spilled out of armors. Their eyes were all fixed on one person; me. Their great commander who couldn’t save them. The screams of my soldiers lingered like ghosts in the wind. I gripped my sword tighter, my hands were slick with blood. Something dark was rising in the shadows ahead of me. Whatever had murdered tens of thousands of my men was coming, and it was coming for me. My knees trembled violently, yet I fought the urge to fall to the ground as it quaked beneath my boots. Thunder rumbled across the pitch-black sky, followed by a strike of lighting. I tried to swallow, but t

Taste death’s kiss

KAEL Another nightmare?” she asked. Her tone was laced with worry. I nodded stiffly, unable to form words. She sighed. “This is getting ridiculous. Is it about…?”“She’s alive,” I snapped. Even then, my voice didn’t sound like my own. Selene arched a brow, and I continued. “Elora’s alive.”Selene froze for half a second. Hope ignited in my chest. Finally. Someone could share in my fear, in my relentless search. All of a sudden, my wife threw back her head and bursted into laughter. My face twisted into a frown. I had been a fool to think she, of all people, would understand. “That’s impossible,” she said, waving a hand as her laughter slowly died. “You brought her chopped fingers and flesh back to this pack with your own two hands, Kael. She cannot possibly have survived all that, and even if she did, I’m sure she’ll be better off dead wherever she is.”My throat tightened. Even after all this time, Selene was still filled with hate whenever she thought of Elora. But my
