IRIS Steven was Megan’s psychotic stalker boyfriend. They had dated as teenagers and he used to beat and push her around. When Megan finally found the courage to break up with him, Steven was not having it. He stalked her for over two years and nothing was done about it despite her many reports to the police. And she was finally able to get a restraining order against him, but even that did not stop Steven Walsh from stalking her. And Megan just couldn’t prove it to the police because of how sneaky he was. So nothing was done. The restraining order was basically useless. But then, over three years ago, he made himself known. Broke into her apartment and attacked her with a knife. He also raped her. Luckily, a neighbor had heard the commotion and called the police, and that’s how Steven was caught. Megan was only recovering when we met at the hospital for the first time two years ago, when I was pregnant and working as a nurse. I knew the toll that this entire issue had t

IRIS “Oh, you have got to be kidding me,” I muttered under my breath as Layla catwalked toward us, in the same hair and dress color as me. I mean, I could look past the dress because I didn’t really care about that. But… the hair? Was she that much of a psycho that she would change the color of her hair? “What are you doing, Layla?” I heard Maverick ask as she came to a stop in front of us. Layla assessed me from my head to my toes, an amused smile playing on her lips, and then she turned to Maverick, an innocent, wide-eyed look on her face. “Whatever do you mean, Mav?” Maverick clenched his jaw, his gaze steady as he glared at her. “Layla.” Layla let out a laugh, reaching for her hair to play with the strands. “Oh, you mean this? I wanted to try something new.” She pouted. “Are you upset? I know how much you loved my blonde hair. You said you never wanted me to dye it, remember?” Maverick’s arm tightened around my waist, the only sign that Layla’s taunts were affecti

IRIS Megan. My baby.My baby. My baby. My baby.I couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t think. Couldn’t even speak.I was a zombie when Maverick led me to his car. A zombie when he drove, but not oblivious to the worried stares that he kept throwing my way.But before Maverick had even parked the car in front of the hospital, I was already out. Already running inside. The ground was cold beneath my bare feet. At some point, I’d taken my shoes off, and I hadn’t even noticed. I had no idea where they were.“Iris!” I heard Maverick call behind me, but I was already disappearing through the doors. “Wait!”I was a zombie when I walked over to the reception. The nurses looked at me expectantly, waiting for me to say something.Anything.But I couldn’t. Even though my mouth opened, no words came out. My throat, my breathing. It was all constricted. Fear and panic wrapped themselves tightly around my chest, gripping me so harshly. Rendering me speechless.“How can we help you, Miss?”“My…m–my b—”“A w

IRIS The expression on Maverick’s face was either going to make me lose my breath, or ruin me. Either way, I was going to die. I shouldn’t have said that. Definitely shouldn’t have included Maverick in the list of the Sinclairs that I didn’t trust, but I couldn’t help it. I just… couldn’t trust him. But I couldn’t also help but feel like I’d made a horrible mistake. Not a mistake as horrible as keeping his daughter from him, but horrible nonetheless. Maverick sneered at me, and in a flash, my back slammed hard against the wall with my hands above my head. Maverick had pinned both my hands against the wall with one of his. “Give me one instance,” he seethed. “One instance where I made you feel like you couldn’t trust me. Where I caused you damage like you say the Sinclairs do.” I didn’t respond. Not because I didn’t want to, or because I couldn't. But because I didn’t have an answer to Maverick’s question. My lips remained parted, but no words came out. His jaw

IRIS I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised that the moment things went south, Layla would swoop in and try to “fix” things. But that still didn’t soften the hurt that I felt. Seeing Maverick wrap his arms around the girl that so obviously wanted him, was heartbreaking, to say the least. It pulled at something inside of me that shouldn’t have been pulled at all.But I had to remind myself that Maverick wasn’t mine. And that even if he was, I deserved whatever he was dishing out at me right now.Dwayne gave me a short glance, and I could see a hint of… worry or pity in his expression. And then, shaking his head at the scene before us, he disappeared into the corner, heading toward Megan’s room.I should’ve turned around. Should’ve taken one look at Maverick’s arms around her and left without saying a word. But I couldn't.My legs had frozen in place. My lungs refused to work. And my heart?God, my heart was cracking wide open.Layla turned slightly in mavericks arms, noticing me stan
