Elara’s POV~It was a still night, the sort of still night that makes the world feel so stuffy for you. Without uttering a word to anyone, I left the house and held the flower crown I had made nervously. Petals, the pale lavender ones, with the white centers and the gold dust. It was so frail and so fragile, like the life that had died too soon. The sacred tree stood large before them with its branches stretching towards the heavens. I stepped little by little towards the pile of dirt below, the earth that held Jasmine’s baby. I felt my chest tighten as I saw it. I got down on my knees, feeling the dampness of the earth coming through my skirt, and placed the crown softly on the grave.I left my hands there, touching the earth, and spreading my fingers into it. I closed my eyes, inhaled, and then the words poured out of me.“Baby,” I said, my voice breaking, “I don’t even know if you can hear me, but I hope you can. I had this crown made for you because Jasmine would’ve wanted you to h

Lyra’s POV~The night breeze had been cool on my skin as I snuck outside for a walk, but it felt like fire the instant I heard their voices. I hid in the shadows by the sacred tree, my breast heaving as I stood straining to listen.Damien’s voice was the first that I heard, sounding hoarse and angry. Then, next, I heard Caspian, the two of them firing at each other with words. And then, her. Elara’s voice, shaking but stern.I dropped to my knees, my nails clawing at the smooth bark of the tree I was hiding behind. My stomach twisted. It was always her. Always at the center. Even in her misery, even in her weakness, she drew them toward her as a moth draws flames toward her.And when Elara’s weeping words hushed them, when Damien’s face crumbled in humiliation, I could not bear to look. I spun on my heel and ran before they could see me.By the time I made it back to my room, hot, relentless fury was coursing through my veins. I ran frantically around the room, shaking my hands.“She’s

Damien’s POV~Sleep had long abandoned me. I could close my eyes, and it was only Elara’s tear-streaked, tired face that I could see.I had stayed silent too long. Each time I tried to speak, Lyra’s threat tightened around my throat. “If you tell her the truth, she dies.” I had been tied down by that fear, but tonight I was fed up.I couldn’t take that silence any longer. I needed answers. I wanted to hear what Lyra had actually done.So I ended up outside her room. The halls were silent, the lanterns dim. I leaned against the wall, biding my time and listening. When I heard no noise from inside, I stepped in.Her room had the faint scent of rose oil, but an acrid smell was part of it. I ransacked a little, opened drawers, checked her table. All I found were papers, ribbons, and a half-burned candle. Nothing. I was about to mutter a curse and turn my back when I heard the soft scuffing of her sandals in the hall.My wolf snarled, warning me, Hide! And I jumped under the bed right when

Damien’s POV~I came out of the woods with splinters buried in my knuckles and blood coming out of my palms. The Seer’s words kept on disturbing me.My chest burned. I took my phone out of my pocket with trembling hands and dialed her number. Lyra’s number. I called once. Twice and then again. But there was no answer."Pick up, God damn you," I snarled, my voice low and menacing. My wolf snapped inside me, restless. She's fleeing from you because she knows. Because she’s guilty.Whatever little control I had left me vanished. I yanked my car door open and slammed my way inside, pushing the key into ignition with a backhanded slap that nearly snapped the key. The engine revved, and I hit the gas.The tires screeched against the road as I sped down the deserted street, shadows ripping past my windows. I could see a series of colored lights from my rearview mirror.“Shit.”I flinched, but didn’t let up. The siren fired nearer, with a cop driving alongside me, gesturing for me to pull ove

Lyra’s POV~I was in Elara’s room to play the doting sister once more, taking my seat by her bed and acting like I gave a damn. But when I pushed open her door, it was empty.I frowned. “Where is she?” I asked the maid who was arranging the folded sheets in the hall.“My lady, she went away, but now,” the girl replied with a bow of her head. “A parcel came for her. The elders summoned her to the council.”The words hit me like a slap. My pulse raced. The elders. Elara. Once again, she was being observed, summoned, and appreciated. I shut my jaw and stormed out without further reply.I drove to the council hall as though fury and fire were coursing through my veins. I grabbed for the wheel so hard that my nails tore parts of the leather. Every time I shut my eyes, I saw her face. Elara and her depressive eyes that made everyone pity her, Elara with that strange, breakable dignity of hers that sucked in loyalty like fire pulls moths. She could be still and silent and still be loved. An
