Damien’s POV~I didn't have a response for her. My throat had closed when Elara had looked at me and had asked for my assistance. The answer remained heavy on my tongue, but it wouldn't come out.“I —” I began, but nothing came out after that. She faced me squarely, her gaze holding, and as I did not say anything, her lips twisted into the briefest and bitter smile. “It’s fine. Not that I thought you’d say yes.” Her voice was calm, but the disappointment was very evident in her eyes. She turned away, walking fast, with her cloak sweeping lines in the dirt.“Elara, hold up,” I muttered, running after her.“Don’t!” she whirled around, her voice growing louder. “Don’t follow me. Leave me alone, Damien. Just… leave me.” Her shoulders shook, but she remained standing tall, almost as though she wanted me to fight her.My hands were balled into fists at my side as I stood rigid and immobile. And as she walked away for the second time, I released a beastly growl that simply tore from me. I ba

Caspian’s POV~I hadn’t run into Elara since our last encounter. I was haunted with the memory from our last encounter, and I knew that I owed her an apology. I had made up my mind to go to her room, explain, and maybe even bridge the distance I’d created between us.On my way there, I practiced the words I was going to say to her in my mind. “You were right. I let my anger get the best of me. I should have been supportive of you and not been against you.” I tightened my fists. It wasn’t really what I had done, but for her, I would say that. When I got to her door, I knocked. I didn't get an answer, so I slowly pushed the door open, expecting to see her asleep, but the room was empty. My eyes landed on the bed, and it dawned on me that the bed hadn’t been touched. My chest grew tight.“Elara?” I called out softly, but got no reply from her.I searched the halls. I went over and looked at the sacred tree. I checked the garden, checked every possible spot she might have been. Each step

Lyra’s POV~I tried to go about the rest of my day as if nothing had occurred. I brushed out my hair that flowed almost to my waist, ran my hands through the flowers at the window, screamed out commands at the maids, walked back and forth in the hallways as though the responsibility of the house were mine to carry. But beneath my sense of superiority, my chest felt tight and uneasy. Something was wrong, and I knew it. I had not seen Damien since last night. At first, I forced myself to believe that he was busy, he had gone out for a run, or maybe the elders wanted to have a word with him. But as the hours passed by without a glimpse of him, I could feel the empty place inside my chest expanding with every passing moment. What if he had left me? What if he had gone to her?The thought clawed at me. Elara. It was always Elara. Her poison had infected everything, even in her absence. I placed my hand against the wall to steady myself. My breaths were shallow, my pulse racing. I needed

Elara’s POV~I didn't sleep well that night. The cave was cold, and each shadow on the walls seemed as though it had jumped to life while I was asleep. I struggled and squirmed on the unforgiving ground, my cloak covered snuggly over me. And whenever I closed my eyes, I saw the baby in my dreams reaching up to me and then sliding away. By the time I finally fell into something resembling sleep, it was shallow, fitful, and accompanied by whispers I couldn’t quite understand.I wake up to the dulled gasps for breath. The wolf pup shifted weakly next to me, trembling in its tiny body. I felt relieved for a moment. At least it was alive. I’d brought some apples from home, and now I took one out of my bag. I sliced off some with my knife and cut it into small cubes as I put one cautiously into its mouth. It hardly chewed and could barely swallow before its eyes closed once more, and it returned to sleep. “Don’t you die on me,” I whispered as I stroked its head with my thumb. “If you strug

Elara’s POV~The growl sounded again, farther away this time, echoing through the rocks as though it was getting closer with every breath I took. My heart was pounding so hard that I thought it might expose me to it. I leaned against the cold stone and held the pup to my chest and whispered in my mind, "Please, Goddess, let me hide. Please don’t let it find me.”The air got heavier and colder. I heard the sound of something shifting and loose gravel crunching near me, firm and slow. I dared not breathe too loudly. My legs shook, and my sweaty palms rested against the stone.I closed my eyes for a moment and prayed with greater force. Not here, not now. Don’t let me die before I rescue him. Please don’t let this pup be taken, please don’t let another life fall through my hands.Next, I heard sniffing. The beast was searching.I bit the inside of my cheek to prevent myself from gasping. All creaks in the night grew sharper until my own pulse sounded deafening. My thoughts were filled wi
