All Chapters of CONTRACT OF FATE: Chapter 31 - Chapter 40

ALEXANDER'S Pov The legal meeting lasted three hours. Three hours of careful, precise language from four people whose job was to translate threat into strategy and strategy into action. At the end of it I knew exactly what my father was doing, exactly how far along he was, and exactly how many moves I had available before the window of easy containment closed. It was not a comfortable number of moves. I sat at the head of the conference table after the lawyers filed out and looked at the city through the floor to ceiling glass and thought about my father with the specific cold clarity I had developed for thinking about him over years of practice. Reymond Sterling was not a man who acted from emotion. He had raised me to believe that emotion was the variable that undid otherwise sound strategy. He had demonstrated this repeatedly throughout my childhood by treating the people around him, including his son, as positions on a board rather than people with interior lives. He had

~ELENA~He was in the entrance hall when I got back.I did not expect him. Alexander at six PM on a Thursday was supposed to be in a boardroom or a conference call or one of the hundred other places his schedule consumed him, the places that made this mansion feel, on most evenings, like something I occupied alone with Maria and the particular silence of a very large house that was not mine.He was standing at the foot of the stairs with his jacket still on and his phone in his hand and he looked up when I came through the door and something in his face did the thing it had been doing lately. The thing I had no name for. The adjustment.I was not composed yet. That was the problem. I had been composed in the cab. I had been composed on the pavement outside the hospital. I had been composed for the entirety of the forty minute journey back across the city with my mother's rosary in my closed fist and the weight of everything she had said sitting in my chest like something I had not yet

— ELEANOR —I had always been a patient woman.Patience was not a virtue I had developed through practice or discipline the way lesser people developed things. It was constitutive, built into the structure of who I was the way good bone structure was built in, inherited from a mother who had understood that the most dangerous women in any room were never the loudest ones. They were the ones who waited. Who watched. Who understood that the correct moment was never the first available one but the one that produced the result you had determined in advance.I had been waiting for Elena Carter to make a mistake for six months. She had not made one. This had surprised me initially and then, after the initial surprise passed, it had interested me in the way that competent opponents interested me — not with admiration, which was a sentiment I reserved for people who had earned it within my particular taxonomy of earning, but with the focused attention of a woman recalibrating her approach.El

— ALEXANDER — Friday arrived the way difficult things arrived, not dramatically, not with the courtesy of announcement, but simply by being the day that followed Thursday in the way days always followed each other regardless of what you had built or broken or left unresolved inside them. I was in the office by seven. The Hargrove dinner was at eight PM. Between now and then there were eleven hours of work that required my actual attention, the legal team's preliminary findings on Reymond's board approach, three calls that could not be delegated, the environmental violation situation on the East Coast that Victor had been managing quietly for two weeks and that had developed a complication I needed to address personally. I addressed them in order. With the efficiency that was my primary professional language. The one I had been speaking since my mid-twenties with the fluency of a man who understood that precision was respect for the people whose time depended on your decisions. I

— ELENA —The back stairs were narrow.I had found them in the second month. Not deliberately, not as part of any plan I had yet formed, but through the ordinary navigation of a house I was learning the way you learned any large unfamiliar space. Through movement and repetition and the specific attention of a person who understood, at some level she had not yet named, that knowing the exits was a form of survival.I moved down them now with my bag against my chest and my hand on the wall in the dark and my breathing controlled to the specific deliberate rhythm I had practiced in the months since I understood that control was the only currency I had reliable access to in this house. The stairs were stone beneath the carpet runner. Old stone. The kind that did not creak under weight the way timber did. I had checked this. I had stood on every third step in an ordinary afternoon months ago under the pretense of looking at something on the wall and I had noted: no creak. No give. The ston
