Agnes huffed under her breath, muttering something I couldn’t catch. She straightened her shoulders and gave me a long, penetrating look, like she was memorizing my face in case this went badly. Then she walked to the door, undid the latch, and opened it just a crack. I stayed pressed against the wall, just out of sight, heart hammering against my ribcage. Mark’s voice was immediate. “Where is she?” “She’s gone” Agnes replied flatly. “Just left.” There was a beat of silence. I imagined Mark narrowing his eyes. “She was here, right?” “She’s not anymore” Agnes said, her tone sharp now, even as her hand gripped the edge of the door tighter. “And I don’t answer to you, young man.” Silence again.
