VanessaMorning hit me like a rock.My body didn’t want to move. Every part of me felt heavy and foreign, as if it belonged to someone else.I forced myself upright, dragging my aching limbs toward the small bowl of water by the wall. I brushed my teeth and splashed cold water on my face. It didn’t help. The exhaustion was bone-deep.I grabbed the mop and started on the hallway floors, trying to work as fast as I could. My head spun. The scent of the floral diffusers that lined the corridor burned my nose. The dizziness worsened with every swipe. My hands trembled on the wooden handle, and my vision swam. Then I heard footsteps approaching. I looked up, blinking to clear my sight.Nina was walking hand in hand with her husband, Gary, both dressed in running gear. She noticed me first, her face breaking into a warm smile. “Good morning, Vanessa,” she greeted kindly.I tried to smile back, but even lifting my head felt like too much. I gripped the mop tighter, using it for balance, and d

VanessaMy eyelids felt impossibly heavy. When I tried to sit up, my body sank back into the soft cushions of the couch as if my limbs were made of sand. I blinked at the ornate ceiling of Nina's apartment, frowning. What the hell had Alec given me?The taste of the feverroot paste still lingered on my tongue—deceptively soft, like it meant no harm—but my body felt drugged. The room swam as I forced myself upright. I rubbed my eyes with the heels of my hands, trying to chase the dizziness away. Then came the laughter. Voices. The clink of forks against plates.I turned my head slowly toward the sound. The dining space at the far end of Nina’s apartment was full. Alec’s deep voice cut clean through the air. Lucas, the Beta snake, laughed obnoxiously—loud and petty. Gary, the gentle Gamma, was probably the one who had actually said something funny. And Nina, ever the perfect hostess, was smiling politely, holding it all together. And Maya. Of course she was there. Her voice rang out, hig

AlecMaya's scream cracked through the hall like shattering glass. At first, I ignored it. Maya screamed often over dresses that didn’t fit, food that was too cold, maids who moved too slowly. I had long since learned not to react to her manufactured dramas, to preserve what little sanity I had left. But then came another sound.Begging. A desperate plea.My chest tightened. I stood frozen in the corridor, listening. A soft whimper reached my ears, almost too quiet to hear, followed by the unmistakable thud of another hit. Then, the sound of dragging. Something being hauled across the floor like dead weight.Vanessa.My wolf, Jaxon, stirred, then roared beneath my skin, pacing the confines of my mind in a furious agitation. I clenched my fists. I moved, my steps thunderous as they pounded across the corridor toward Maya's chambers. I reached the door, ready to kick it from its hinges, ready to tear apart anyone who dared to lay a hand on her.But I stopped. She was, to the rest of th

Alec"What the hell do you think you're doing?" Lucas demanded. His voice was sharp and scolding, the kind of tone a Beta should never take with his Alpha."Relax. It's my house, after all."Lucas scoffed bitterly at that, repeating my words with a sneer."'Your house.' You were kissing her, Alec. Out in the open. Like no one could possibly walk by and witness it." His voice was rising, frantic with disbelief. "Maya’s room is just down the hallway!""I couldn't help it," I replied flatly. "If you have a problem with it, go argue with the moon."I didn’t wait for a response. My body moved ahead of my mind, dragging me back toward the wine bar. A familiar heat curled beneath my skin. My wolf was prowling the edges of my consciousness, restless and undone by her.Lucas followed, his footsteps heavy with anger. "This won't end well," he warned. "People loved your father, Alec. They respected him. And now you're bedding the daughter of the man who killed him. Who killed their Luna."That ma

VanessaMorning crawled in slowly, dragging the weight of my thoughts behind it. I didn’t want to think about anything. I wanted my mind free from worries. So I resumed my morning duty, dusting and folding.Somewhere below, a grunt echoed through the air. Then a laugh followed by the clatter of bodies hitting sand. The sounds came in intervals. My curiosity edged forward.I set the cloth aside and walked to the nearest window. The courtyard was alive. Three males sparred shirtless under the rising sun, blades in hand and adrenaline thick in the air. But only one of them made my breath catch like a snare.Alec.His back was turned at first. Muscles stretched across his shoulders in perfect lines, moving with precision. Each step was calculated and graceful. His laugh rang out as he ducked under Lucas’s blade and struck clean across his side.He turned, and I swallowed.Tribal markings sprawled across his torso, half-faded in places, carved into flesh. My heart betrayed me with a thud.

VanessaMorning crept in with the reluctant slowness of something unwelcome, dragging behind it the weight of my thoughts.I didn’t want to think. I wanted my mind free from worry. So I did what I always did when the world became too loud.I worked.I resumed my morning duty, dusting furniture in the upper hallways, folding linens that required no thought. From somewhere below, in the main training courtyard, a grunt broke the quiet, followed by laughter and the thuds of bodies hitting sand. The sounds came at uneven intervals. Curiosity nudged me forward, toward the noise.Setting the dusting cloth aside, I moved to the nearest open window. The courtyard below stirred with motion and heat. Three males sparred shirtless under the early sun, practice blades drawn, fueled by raw adrenaline.Lucas, Gary, and the one who made my breath catch like a trapped bird.Alec.His back was to me, the muscles across his shoulders flexing with every motion, revealing a landscape of controlled power.

VanessaI walked with the quiet intent of someone who didn’t want to be seen. The basket in my hands barely weighed anything, but the pressure in my chest was heavier. Thoughts, doubts, and bruised pride tangled together.Maya had asked for fresh apples. My feet followed the trail of wind-scattered petals, a thin distraction as I made my way toward the garden. My mind wouldn’t settle. Nina’s supposed kindness didn’t make sense, not from someone who had once been Alec’s. No woman helped the girl bonded to the man she once loved. There had to be something behind it. Guilt. Pity. Maybe something colder. Maybe Nina just wanted to be close enough to watch me fall apart. The suspicion tasted like jealousy. It curled at the back of my throat. I didn’t want to care about Alec. I didn’t want to feel anything at all, especially not the sharp twist in my gut when I imagined him with Nina. With Maya. I told myself it didn’t matter. This world didn’t treat sex as sacred. But the images lingered

Vanessa Nina had been the only person I let in. Now I couldn't tell where her loyalty ended and manipulation began.Since overhearing Isabella’s conversation with Maya, I’d started seeing Nina through a lens I couldn’t turn off. Every memory of her support twisted into something darker. I went back to each shared moment like I was dissecting a crime scene. Her comfort. Her calm instructions. Her smile when she handed me that ridiculous orange cloak and insisted it suited me. Had it always been that calculated?“She still loves him,” Isabella had said to Maya. “A love that intense doesn’t simply vanish.”They didn’t know. That was what cut deepest. They had no idea what he and I were. They thought I was some slave. A passing threat. They had no clue what it meant to be bonded. No understanding of what it cost. And yet, their words landed. Not because they were right. But because I couldn’t be sure Nina hadn’t lied to me by staying silent. Why didn’t she tell me?If she'd truly buried

VanessaI was dripping. My thighs were wet, and my breathing wouldn’t slow. If there was ever a moment I knew I was screwed, it was now. My body wasn’t just reacting. It was begging.I gripped the edge of the wall behind me, trying to stay upright. My heart rammed against my ribs. I could barely look Alec in the eyes without feeling like I was going to melt into the floor. The scent of him, and the way he stared at me like he owned me, was breaking me open.My lips were still swollen from his last kiss, but I wasn’t ready when he lunged again. Alec's mouth crashed onto mine with that same hungry desperation like he couldn’t get enough of me.I pulled away, panting. "No self-control? Seriously?"His smirk was pure sin. "You’re dripping, Vanessa. Don’t come at me like I’m the only one losing it.”I turned to leave, but his arm locked around my waist and yanked me back. His lips devoured mine again, rougher this time. My skirt bunched up in the back, exposing too much. I moaned into his

AlecMaya gloating about her upcoming coronation wore me out and convinced me, every damn day, that I was making a mistake. She was obsessed with the spotlight, like a cat stretching in the sun, soaking up every last ray of attention. Her friends buzzed with talk of the ceremony. I couldn’t stand another second of it, but as Alpha, I had no choice but to endure. To escape the preparations, I spent the entire day surrounded by young, eager scouts with too many questions and too much energy—the kind of energy I used to have, before everything changed.“Alpha Alec! Is it true you once outran a mountain lion on foot?”The boy who asked had eyes shining with uncomplicated hero worship.“I want to be like you when I grow up,” another beamed.A dark chuckle escaped me.“Don’t be moved by what you see. And don’t be fooled by stories. Be better than me. What you see isn’t all there is.”I smiled briefly as the scouts beamed, unaware that my words were more warning than praise.Later that night,
