Chapter 1

EVIEI SHOULD’VE taken the main road. The thought hit me as I walked deeper into the woods, my boots pressing into damp earth. The air was thick with the smell of rain as chills ran through my body. I pulled my jacket tighter around me, not that it helped. The cold had already slipped deep in my bones. It wasn’t even that late, but Black Hollow had this way of emptying out fast once the sun went down. People didn’t stay outside. The streets went quiet, the windows dark, and if you were dumb enough to walk home alone, well… that was your mistake. Mine, apparently. Chapter 2

EVIETHE WOLVES were right behind me. Their snarls echoing in the dark, and I could hear their claws scraping against the ground, chasing me down. Their eyes were all I could see, glowing like flames in the night. My lungs burned with each breath, but it wasn’t enough to outrun them. No matter how fast I ran, they were closing in. I could feel them getting closer, could feel their hunger in the air. The ground beneath me seemed to shift, like it was swallowing me whole. I couldn’t see the end of the forest. My legs were giving out, but I didn’t stop.Then, I felt it.Hands so cold and rough closed around my neck, tightening. I tried to scream, but it wasn’t a scream. It was a breath, ragged and useless. A gasp left my lips, and I shoved at his chest. Hard. My palms hit solid muscle, but I didn’t stop pushing until he finally let go. My hands shook as I pressed my palm to the wall, my legs shaky.“I’m not… I’m not anybody’s.” I swallowed, my throat tight, my chest hammering so hard it felt like it might crack open.I had to get out.
