CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

LIAM'S POV I was dumbstruck. I should have heeded Reid's idea. He thought I should keep the information to myself. That was all I could think of as I watched her rush into the bathroom. I had made her cry. Again. "Don't tell her, Alpha. She's not going to take it well. She's better off not knowing if it caused her so much pain." Reid had advised, and like the fool that I am, I ignored his advice. I stupidly hoped she would see my intention. I knew she would be hurt, but I didn't expect it to be this bad. I could hear her wails from here, for crying out loud. I got off the bed and crossed the room to the en suite bathroom. "Baby, can I come in?" Her response was swift. "Don't you dare. I can't look at you right now." "At least, let me explain." "I honestly don't want to hear it, I swear." This was worse than heartbreak. Her little whimpers were getting to me. "Bella Mia, please." "Go away, Liam. Let me mourn the loss of my child." I wanted to point out to her that it was like

CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

AMY'S POV I clock the exact moment his smile dropped. Maybe I was pushing too hard. Maybe I was thinking too much. Overthinking had always been a strong suit of mine. "What are you talking about?" "Well, you know, I had to confirm. With the casino gambling and packs trying to ruin each other." "I still don't see your point." His tone was off. He had never spoken to me like this. Not in this strange manner. I guess there was always a first time for everything. "The way it was in the movies," I pressed on, refusing to let it go. "If..." He burst into laughter. "You learned how to recognize a shady person from the movies?" I was more than relieved that he had found something funny in this. "Don't laugh at me, okay?" I pouted. He sobered up and pulled me to him. "I'm sorry, okay? I'm not laughing anymore." "You know what I'm saying is possible, right?" "Of course." "So, you believe me?" "Yes." "Good. Are you?" "Involved in shady dealings?" A strange look flitted across h

CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

LIAM'S POV "What's the mile-high club?" Her innocence was something that got to me. Given her circumstances, one would think that she was a wild girl, but I have it on good authority that she was never one to be wild. In fact, the one time she wanted to be wild was when she came to the club. That was also when we met. "Telling is no fun at all. I'm going to show you." She rolled her eyes and looked out the window. Maybe she thought I forgot about it, because by the time the light changed to green and it was okay to unbuckle, she had busied herself with the movie options. "I thought you wanted to nap." "In a minute." I knew she would get bored soon enough and she would give up, so I let her be while I reflected on the events of the past two days. Finding out that the Cajun family had been the one behind my woman's accident had made my blood boil immeasurably. Confessing to her had been one thing, but it had been even harder to confess what I did to him. I couldn't have her think

CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

AMY'S POV "I promise, you have nothing to be scared of. Dr. Rayna is the best healer in Crystalline. Not only a healer, Dr. Rayna was the top of the class in medical school." "I know you wouldn't settle for less than the best." It was true. Liam would never choose something if it wasn't the best. "I'm glad you know that. So, you'll do it?" We had returned to Crystalline yesterday, and he had already scheduled my surgery for yesterday, but I convinced him that he didn't need to do that. I wanted him to move it to the next week, but he wasn't having it. "You're only going to be delaying the inevitable." Was his only response. "I just feel like it's unnecessary. I can see quite well now." Except for the sudden dizziness that would occur if I looked at the same spot for too long or the occasional blurriness, I was fine. I hid it well from him, or else he would have dragged me to the operating room. "You're fooling no one, baby. I know you sometimes still have spells." Damn his su

CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

LIAM'S POV I personally drove her to the hospital about an hour before her appointment. "What if there's a mistake?" "While mistakes are inevitable, nobody would dare to make any mistakes with you. I'm going to be here the whole time." "And you'll be there before I wake up?" "You know it." She kept bouncing her legs as the hospital came into view. "Relax, baby. You're not alone." "I know." "You're going to be fine. The doctor said it was painless. She wouldn't dare lie to me." "How do you know her, anyway?" She was trying to be nonchalant, but I could hear the strange note in it. She was jealous, even though she had no reason whatsoever to be jealous. "Charlotte?" "Even her name is pretty." She pouted. "Charlotte is an old family friend. Her father knows my father." "I see." "Baby, are you jealous?" "Jealous?" She scoffed in a way that she hoped was convincing. It was not. "I'm not." "Charlotte is a pretty woman, but no one can even match up to your beauty. You know

CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

LIAM'S POV "I want to see my friend." She had whispered, and my reaction had been immediate. My body froze, and I pretended to be asleep. I heard her the night before I pretended to be asleep. It was ironic, really, me being scared of a five-foot-one woman. Not that I was scared of what she would do to me. Amy was fucking harmless, but I was scared that she would somehow get it in her head to leave me again if she saw her friend. I could easily arrange for her to see her friend again if she wanted because I had her old phone with me. But I didn't want to. This morning, I had left her in bed, something that I was still regretting. There was nothing more that I loved in the morning than seeing the slight smile on her face when she realized that I'm still in bed with her. The feeling that I was responsible for that smile was enough to make my day. Instead, I left her in bed and wrote a note to explain that I was called in. The chances that she would ask me about her friend again wer

CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN

AMY'S POV "Nonna, do you know if we have any bathing salts and scented candles around?" "I will send someone to the supermarket to get some. Is everything fine, Luna?" "Yes, I need some for the Alpha. He's been working too hard lately." She snickered before quickly covering it up. It was a reaction she didn't mean to show. "What was that for?" I smiled so she could see I wasn't mad about it. "I'm having trouble imagining the Alpha in the tubs." I understand what she meant. He was so scary on the outside that it was hard to imagine him being anything else, especially by his staff. "Trust me, I can get him to do anything I want." I winked, and she laughed. I was glad to see her getting comfortable with me. It felt good having someone in my corner. "I know that." I was about to tell her the other reason I had sought her out when a maid opened the kitchen door with a bang. Nonna jumped, and I almost dropped the berries I had been munching on. "Vera," Nonna scolded. "Can't you ope

CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

LIAM'S POV I regretted the second the words left my mouth, and I wished I could take them back instantly, but the damage had been done already. The look on her face was one I couldn't describe. It was everything and nothing at the same time. "What did you just say?" "Look, forget it. I'm sorry for keeping it from you." "No, I need you to repeat what you just told me." "No, Amy." I wasn't going to make myself vulnerable again. "I'm not going to repeat myself." "Liam, you honestly think I'm going to leave you for Maddy, my friend?" She sounded confused as fuck. When she put it like that, it sounded illogical as fuck. "No," I huffed, "that's not it at all. I'm sorry, okay?" "But I need to understand what's going on so I can forgive you." "I don't know, okay?" I groan and drop on the bed. Great, now she probably thinks I'm mad. The bed dips beside me, and I feel her presence beside me. "Liam, I need you to tell me what's going on." "It's just stupid." "Didn't you witness all

CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE

AMY'S POV "Call me if anything happens, okay?" Liam said for probably the 10th time. "What do you think is going to happen to me, huh? Someone's going to kidnap me?" "There's always that possibility." "You have to be joking." "I'm not." He said seriously. Liam could really overdo it sometimes. Despite being married for over a few months now, he still had this irrational fear that I was going to run away. If anything was going to make me run, it would be his overbearing attitude right now. "Yes, you are. Nothing is going to happen to me." I told him as I finished applying my lip gloss. "I still want you to..." "Aren't you supposed to be at work?" It's almost 11 in the morning, and he's still at home, insisting he would drive me to the park. Maddy and I had finally reconnected, and we had set a date to meet at the park because anything other than a public place was unacceptable for him. The original plan was to go to her house. It was the reasonable option, but in his own wor

CHAPTER FORTY

LIAM'S POV "So, you've eventually allowed her?" "Not exactly, she found out I was keeping it from her." "See? You should have told her beforehand. I guess you're now sleeping in the guest room." "My wife isn't unreasonable." "Hmm... I think..." "Why don't you give me a full report about the Alphas I asked you to look into?" "But it's so much fun to gossip about your marriage instead." "You're worse than an old woman." Reid had been on my case since I stepped out of my car. I hadn't even gotten my coat off before he started hounding me for information. "So, just tell me so I can get off your case." Knowing his stubborn ass wasn't going to drop it, I gave him the rundown of what went down last night. "She's so smart." He grumbled after I finished. I couldn't believe the first thing I was doing at work was talking about my marriage. He was a bad influence on me. "I can't believe she chose to stay with you, Alpha." "Shut up. You're one to talk. You're not even married yet."
