"There's no escaping from me, child. You must think you're so clever, huh? A st*pid omega like yourself getting into medical school. You're never going to become a doctor." She sneered, and for the second time in a month, my world fell apart. Amy's life has been miserable growing up with a gambler mother, Amy’s mother has always antagonized her throughout her life. Every day, I wake up ashamed. Some people wake up and don't remember where they are for, like, a minute or two. Not me. I opened my eyes immediately to the weight of the world on my young shoulders. The moment my eyes opened was the moment I felt it all. The burden of being alone in the world. I heard a loud sound from the room beside mine, and I rolled my eyes at the reminder that I wasn't alone physically. What was my mother doing up so early? I wondered as I got up from my threadbare mattress and kicked off my equally thin blanket. My life as an ordinary omega would have been a bit more bearable if my mother was in my corner, but I didn't have such luck. I didn't have to wonder what my mother was doing up this early for long. Her voice carried easily through the thin wall of our two-room apartment on the outskirts of the town. Only werewolf families as miserable as ours stayed on this side of the city. "Amy, you worthless nothing. You dare steal the last bottle of my beer?" I wasn't even the least bit surprised. "I didn't steal it. You drank it." I yelled back. "You better replace my bottle or else..." She trailed off, and I huffed. That unspoken threat could mean anything from dumping my small collection of clothes into water to locking me out. Once, she even went as far as forcing me out of the house in only my bra and my panties. I know other twenty-year-olds don't wake up to threats by their mothers. With a renewed sense of urgency, I splashed water on my face and made myself presentable before running out of my room. I didn't have any shift, but there was a good chance that I would be able to cover for someone. Fortunately for me, my manager, Tom, smiled when he saw me. "Amy, thank the goddess. I was just about to pick an apron. Get to work." He threw an apron at me, and I sighed in relief. The rest of the day went by, and it finally ended when Jamie, my manager at my third job, finally bade us all goodnight at 1 a.m. I was used to walking these hours alone, so I was not afraid. I was just happy I was going home with a full belly. I watched the other waitresses pile into Ubers, but I couldn't afford to. Every penny I made went to my savings for medical school, if I got in. In no time, I was home, and I was pleased to see that my mother had gone to sleep. The next day seemed to be very promising too until my mother threw an empty bottle at my door. I rolled my eyes and tried to make a run for it, except my luck had run out this morning. She caught me on the way out. "Not so fast, you little sl*t. I know you were out all day yesterday. Where's my money?" For a woman that spent all her days gambling and drinking, her grip was strong. "Ma, let go." I sneered, but her grip only tightened. She was in for a shock this morning because I had no intention of parting with my hard-earned money. If my wolf were a Beta or Gamma, she would simply absorb my pain. In my case, I was the one taking all the pain. "You're not going anywhere until you give me my money. I need it!" "Not as much as I do." I yelled back and pushed her only for her to grab me by my second arm, her nails digging into my flesh until it drew blood. "Ma!" She shook me hard before she pushed me roughly on the floor. I landed on my ass. "I should have sold you the first chance I got. Maybe some rich Alpha would want you as their plaything." Tears welled up in my eyes at her cruel words. It was not that this was the first time she was saying it. It was that it hurt as it did the first time she said it. "You keep being useless to me, and that's what will happen to you." She fixed me with a glare so full of disgust that a stranger would never believe she was my own mother. "Ma!" With that, she went into her room. I didn't wait for her to come back before I ran out of the house yet again. Getting out from under her roof was my greatest motivator. It was the only reason I stretched myself so thin, to gather the funds I needed for medical school. Goddess knows I would leave her behind. I thought about ways I could make money faster all day so I could leave this town and all its pain behind. After I closed from work that night, one of the other girls offered for me to join her Uber pool, but I declined. I wasn't in a hurry to get home anyway. I'd rather walk to clear my head a bit. I was about to get out of the alley that led to my street when I saw two men lurking ahead. My heart skipped but I decided to walk on. It turns out that I had made the wrong decision when one of them called me by my name. "That's not me." I denied and to my surprise, he pulled out a picture. "I hate liars, Amy." The fierce-looking one smiled, revealing a missing tooth. "Lying won't fly where you're going." "Excuse you? I think you have the wrong person because I'm not going anywhere with you." "Wrong answer. Your mother has sold you to us to clear her debt. You'll remain with us until you have cleared it all up." It seemed to me like my world had imploded. My mother did make true of her words. Without stopping to think about it, I ran!AMY'S POV The next day, the news of Neil's company bankruptcy was the highlight of the business world. How could Liam do this over a simple argument? Did he know how many people he put out of a living with his senseless actions?I was almost at the restaurant when I decided that this wouldn't do. I need to look him in the eye and have him explain what he had done. I would not be able to focus on anything anyway until I had resolved this. "Take me to my husband's office." I ordered."Yes, Luna Arlington." I seethed all the way there, still finding it hard to believe. Before he had stormed out yesterday, he asked me what I thought about the reason I didn't tell him about Neil and if I truly felt like I was being harassed. Me?I was too stunned to give him an answer yesterday, and he had had the audacity to tell me it was because I enjoyed the attention. Me? I was too busy and too content with my life to seek attention elsewhere. Mavin and Theo were more than any excitement I could eve
AMY'S POV Perhaps, it was not in my best interest. I shouldn't have given him my phone. I wasn't thinking. I didn't get the chance to tell him about Neil yet. To be honest, I was waiting for when I would get a good handle on it so I could finally tell him about Neil. Immediately I heard the ping of a new text. I didn’t have to ask him what it says. It's from Neil, and he has said something untoward. "Amy, what the fuck is this?" Called it. I should have known he would react like this. Honestly, it was my dumb luck that of all the times that Neil would choose to text again, it was when the phone was in my husband's hands.I thought he had finally gotten the hint that nothing would ever happen between us. That was why I had been bold enough to give him my phone number, not that I was guilty of anything. "It's not what it looks like, darling." I tried to be blasé about it, but with the way his jaw was clenched, I could see that it wasn't going to fly with him. "It's not what it look
LIAM'S POV Now that Amy was back from her work trip, I could finally stop working from home. Not that it was a bad thing, but I could barely get anything done from all the noise Theo made. He was more demanding than when his mother was here. I knew that if I told Amy that her son was crying more than usual and it was probably because he missed her so much, she would be on the next plane home, so I kept it from her. I only called after he slept or before he woke up in the morning. It would have been easier too if he had started school, but the new session was still two months away. She was supposed to use only three days, but that was no longer possible because the company she was meeting was flaky as hell. She ended up spending a week and a day there, but it all worked out because she got a good deal. Miraculously, Theo became her sweet little angel, as opposed to how much he disturbed Mavin and me. Even Mavin shook his head at how manipulative he was. The next morning after sh
AMY'S POV I was part excited for the trip because it felt like I was being an adult for the first time in my life. I was contributing to the economy, and it was a great feeling. However, as the day for the trip drew closer. I remembered every scenario that could go wrong in my absence, and I didn't anticipate how nervous I would feel. However, I sucked it up and started packing. It was too late to get out of going after I already promised Maddy that I would do it. It wasn't even that important. We both decided to build a shopping mall together. It was near the restaurant, so running it would be easy. It was also a way for us to bring more revenue in so we would stop depending on Liam for everything. If we wanted, Liam could find partners for us, but Maddy was convinced that we needed to strike out on our own. Liam had also introduced someone for us that was managing our accounts before Maddy decided that she would learn to do it and then took it off his hands. Fortunately for m
AMY'S POV Liam didn't mind that I spent the rest of my date coming up with different ideas for our restaurant. I didn't even tell Maddy yet, but I was still happy to tell him everything that we could do to the restaurant. The next day, Maddy was over at the house, and she was in the nursery watching Theo. The two of them got along so well. I think I would have been jealous if I wasn't his mother. When I entered, Theo was babbling something to Maddy, and whatever she said in response must have been so hilarious that he burst out in laughter. That was a sound I would never get tired of hearing. It was melodious and full of life, or that could be my mom bias speaking. "Wow, you didn't tell me you speak baby?" "I don't, but this little monkey and I have our own special language, don't we, my sweet boy?" She turned back to him, and I was surprised to see him nod. "Are you guys going to teach me?" "Come on, Amy, we can't tell you our secret." I pouted, and they both laughed at me.
LIAM'S POV Today was one of those rare days at work that I didn't have a lot of work to do, so I decided I would go home. It was totally unrelated to the fact that Amy left home early this morning to go see her friend and nothing to do with the fact that I hadn't seen her all day.I decided to pick up some flowers on my way home. She was on the balcony with our kids when I got home. She jumped into my arms when I presented her the flowers. "If I had known this was the reaction I would get for buying you roses, I would have been buying them all this while.""It's not just the flowers, it's the advice you gave me about Maddy. She was so excited when I told her.""Have you girls decided on what you're going to do?""We have no idea yet, but she's excited all the same." "Oh, yeah, why don't you tell me all about it upstairs?""After you take a shower. You look so tired." After my shower, she demanded that I take off my towel and lay naked on my stomach. I felt her weight on my back, an
