Once again, Caroline zoned out as the headmistress droned on with the other start-of-the-school-year announcements. As she did, she felt a strange sensation, like a gentle caress on the back of her neck. It was like the sensation you got when someone was watching you. Caroline frowned—she was often stared at these days, but something about this felt different. Almost menacing rather than curious. It was all she could do not to turn around. Once the assembly was finally over, and the auditorium lights came back on, Caroline rose from her seat and discreetly scanned the rows of students behind her. No one seemed to be paying her any attention.“Everything okay?” Nadine asked, swinging her bag over her shoulder.“Yeah, it’s nothing,” Caroline said, picking up her own bagand sliding out from the row of seats.“How do you feel about going to the library for our first tutorial? I didn’t think you’d really want to be holed up in your room like the last time,” Nadine said as she followed.

Corbin pulled Caroline to her feet and affectionately smoothed her hair back.“What are you doing?” They looked down to see Amelie standing there, her hands on her hips as she looked up at them, her eyebrows raised so high it made her eyes bulge. “Uh, hi, Amelie. This is Corbin Chevalier, he’s…”“I know who he is.” Amelie declared, her voice rising. “What I asked was, what are you doing? You should be with Aldrick, don’t you know?”“Excuse me?” Caroline said, scrunching her face in a mixture of confusion and disbelief.“Miss Veilleux, please keep up with your classmates. We still have a lot to see before orientation is over,” Professor Swindon instructed. Amelie’s glaring gaze switched from Caroline to Corbin and back again as her foot tapped angrily against the ground.“Now, Miss Veilleux!” said the professor.“Ugh!” Amelie declared before she turned and stormed away through the trees.“I suggest you two call it a day

The group walked briskly, initially turning back frequently to ensure Caroline wasn’t lagging behind, but once they realized she had no trouble keeping up, they trekked back to the academy. It wasn’t until they hit the slope of the hill leading back up to the building that Caroline started to struggle and feel her sore ribs start to pinch. She wasn’t su“They’re coming! They’re coming! She wanted to reach out and touch Eloise, to try and calm her, but after Eloise unintentionally knocked her to the ground in the library, Caroline was concerned about the consequences of startling her out of her trance. Fleur nodded and placed her finger against her lips as she approached Caroline and leaned in, so her mouth was close to her ear, “Try not to talk. Anything you say can be heard by Eloise and may affect or alter her memories. We just need to observe.”Caroline nodded to show she understood and waited for Fleur to take the lead. Fleur turned around and held her hands up in the air, level with her head and about shoulder-width apart, her palms flat. With her eyes closed, she appeared to be concentrating, and Caroline stood awkwardly behind her, unsure what to do. Slowly, an image started to appear before them, as though they were looking up at a movie screen. At first, the images came across as patchy and scattered, as though trying to come together but missing in sections. After a few moments, the images became clear enough to see, and Caroline felt like her heart plummeted as she watched, open-mouthed.There stood a hooded figure, her back facing them. They weren’t here before, were they?” Nadine asked, spotting glimpses of students through gaps in the curtains.“No, there weren’t.
