Releasing the locket, Caroline left the room and wandered down the hallway towards the delicious smells of her mother's cooking. “Mom?” she called as she stepped into the kitchen and found it empty. “Mom?” she called a second time, but there was still no answer. Telling herself they must both be outside, she snuck over to the oven and peered in at the lemon meringue pie baking. Her stomach growled again, and closing the oven door, she stood up and lifted the lid off the saucepan of the pasta sauce. Dipping the wooden spoon into the sauce, she blew on it and tasted. She closed her eyes in appreciation and replaced the spoon. On the bench beside it was a tray of half-made lasagna, and she wondered what her brother had gotten up to, to pull her mother away from the kitchen. When she opened her eyes, the sky was dark outside the plane, and she sat up, her eyes darting in disorientation that slowly dissipated as she looked around the cabin. “Good. You’re awake.” Her aunt stated, lowering her knife and fork to either side of the dinner plate that sat before her. She gestured to one of the hostesses, and they served Caroline. As much as she wanted to be sullen and ignore the plate before her, she realized she hadn’t eaten since her family went missing, and the grumble of hunger was almost painful. Thanking the hostess, she picked up her fancy cutlery. Aware her aunt was watching her, and cut into the steaming salmon. Satisfied to see her eating, her Aunt leaned down and withdrew a stack of papers from her bag and held them up for one of the hostesses to collect. They were placed on the table before Caroline, and she begrudgingly looked up from her plate and glanced at the image on the front of the folder with equal parts annoyance and interest.

Caroline opened her eyes, immediately looking out the windows to find the faintest hint of daylight breaking. She blinked her eyes, dry and sore from the night’s tears. Rolling onto her back, she sat up abruptly as she saw a woman standing at the foot of her bed.“My apologies, Miss Destine. The woman was younger than her aunt, perhaps early to mid-twenties, with tangerine hair pulled neatly back from her face. She wore a long-sleeved, black dress that fell just below her knees, over opaque stockings and flat leather shoes. The only color was a small badge pinned to the front of her dress. “A new student! How exciting!” exclaimed a girl with a Magique’s badge. She had chocolate skin and long dark hair held back from her face with red barrettes. She had high cheekbones and dark, almond-shaped eyes lined with thick, long eyelashes. “I’m Nadine Landry, head girl for the Magique’s faction.” She held her hand out, and Caroline shook it, grateful for a friendly greeting.“I’m Caroline, uh…” she trailed off, suddenly unsure of herself.
