Chapter 82TARLYN'S POV I paced around the infirmary for a while not sure of what I was about to do. I needed to get to that scout before he had the chance to tell anyone what he might have seen. My first thought was to go in and create small talk with Yvonne, get any extra information from her and then wait till she's asleep before striking. I groaned and pulled at my hair. That was a terrible idea. If anything happened to him, it would easily be traced back to me. I couldn't risk that. “Think Tarlyn,” I tapped my head. “Think.” I stopped pacing and stared at nothing as if that would help me gather my thoughts. I chewed on the inside of my mouth and tapped my foot on the ground. I exhaled through my mouth. I always had a plan. What was happening to me? There had a look on Kane and Thorne's face tonight like they could tell how much power I had lost. It made them happy and it made me want to pull at my hair. I couldn't let them think they were winning. Ever. I heard footste

Chapter 84TARLYN'S POV I was walking through the halls when I saw Elara standing and staring at a huge photo on the wall. It was Lucien's mother. She stared at it keenly like a wolf paying attention to its master. She pulled her hair and her eyes darted from it to the one in the picture. Her lips moved but I couldn't hear a word. I approached her carefully and cleared my throat. She looked up and immediately started walking away. I hurried after her and grabbed her. She looked down at my hand and I let go. I let go. “How have you been?”I didn't know what response I was expecting from her. She just stood there her eyes burning into me. I tried to tug at her cheeks and she slapped my hands off.“What do you want?” “I just wanted to say hello. We have barely seen each other since last night.”“The night when you tried to kill a…” I moved quickly and grabbed her mouth shut. Her eyes widened. I moved back. “Sorry. I'm sorry.”Her eyes were wide with terror. I couldn't let her

Chapter 86ISLA'S POV Panic started to engulf me and I broke out in a cold sweat. The muscles of my legs tightened and I wanted to dash away and back into the house but I felt rooted to the spot. The roar of my blood filled my ears and my mouth suddenly felt dry. I turned around slowly trying to see where the noise had come from but there was nothing. The sound of the man that the woods had thrown away still rang loudly in my ears. Goosebumps appeared on my skin and I rubbed my palm across my arm. A part of me wanted to turn around and get back to the warmth of my bed and the safety of Sayora's home but I couldn't. My body could not obey that command. My heart was frantic within me. Hitting against my ribs like a wild prisoner. It was beating so fast it almost hurt. Suddenly, there was silence. The woods seemed to hold its breath. I could not hear the sound of the wind or the rustle of leaves. Even the nocturnal animals who seemed to be having a swell time had gone quiet and th

Chapter 88TARLYN’S POV“Kane!” I bellowed.Another nightmare. Another night. The same plot; different setting; and different nights. In these dreams, Kane was free. He walked through corridors and streets. His eyes burned with rage. He fixed them on me but I was too scared to look into them. They burned with vengeance. They burned an inferno. His lips curled in that smile I knew too well. A smile that screamed mockery. A smiled that revealed a promising pain. I was too afraid so I ran as fast as my legs could carry. But no matter how fast I ran, no matter how loud I screamed, no matter what nook and cranny I hid in, he was always closer. I always felt him there. And each time, I woke with my throat soar from silent scream and twisted sheets around me like chains.Sweat danced all over my face and body. It danced to the beats played by the nightmare I had just survived. “It was all a dream…not real. You will be okay.” I whispered in a bid to pacify myself. Perhaps, affirming it to m

Chapter 90 LUCIEN’S POVHis eye lids tore apart, giving way to see vaguely. This time, his journey out of subconsciousness was not ephemeral. The scout, he finally opened his eyes.I didn’t sleep the night he opened his eyes. I was sitting by the fire, turning over the blade in my hands, when Callen’s sharp voice broke the silence.“He’s awake!”I was at his side in seconds. For days he had been drifting in and out of a fevered haze. And in those moments consciousness arrived and stayed for a few minutes, he muttered fragments of words, clutching at nothing in the air as though he were still battling whatever had torn him apart in those cursed woods. We had nearly given him up for dead, and part of me had almost wished he’d pass quietly so that I wouldn’t have to live with the gnawing curiosity of what he had seen in there. But fate, it seemed, had other plans. When his eyes finally fluttered open, they looked pale and bloodshot yet undeniably alive. The entire room was still. The s
