Darla's POV"I never mentioned being a player, that is not what I said. Don't you believe I am too old to play games?""To be honest, I think you're too old for me," I said firmly."Come on, Darla. Both of us are aware that age gap romances are always the best form of romance.""I'm sorry, Xavier. Romance is the last thing on my mind right now,, considering the mess I've been in."Frankly, I was beginning to find him interesting, but some part of me was very suspicious of him."I'm a very patient man, Darla. I know Rome wasn't built in a day."We pulled up at my building. Then he pulled to the curb and shut off the engine."Thank you for dinner," I said to him, my hand on the door."Darla," he said softly.I looked around. "Yeah?""If someone whispers something in your ear," he said softly, "consider who benefits from your reaction."I looked at him. "And if the whisper is true?""There's one way to be sure," he said. "You'll have to have evidence. And since you don't have proofs, it

Darla's POV I gulped, I had no idea how he got a tape of our sex. But it wasn't intentional, so probably it could be some dumb stunt of his to make me do his bidding. But the chance that he might be telling the truth made bile rise into the back of my throat. If he had it, then. I shivered once and breathed deeply. No. I was not going to lose it in the backseat of my own car. I stood up straighter. I leaned back against the seat, every nerve in my body still buzzing with adrenaline. Jace was selfish always. Always hungry for attention. And now he was dragging me into his mess just to make himself look important. The driver's voice broke the quiet. "Miss Darla, we going straight to the location the director gave us?" "Yes," I answered brusquely, my tone brief. My nails bit into the leather seat. I was trapped. And I hated the sensation more than anything on this planet. By the time we pulled into the underground coffee house the director had insisted that we hold the m

Darla's POVI walked outside the cafeteria, the air suddenly too thick to breathe inside. My fingers shook as I scrolled through my contacts until I found my lawyer's number. The moment he replied, I released a hiss of breath, as though I had been holding it all this while."Darla? Something wrong? You sound upset," he answered, speaking softly but with a sharp edge."I don't even know where to start," I growled, pacing the hallway. "Did you watch the news?""No, I've been busy with meetings, haven't had time, but is it bad?""It's Jace. And Melanie. I fought with Melanie in public, and Jace somehow managed to get his hands on the scene and the narrative is that Melanie and I were having a fight over him. He's also threatening me with video, a video of our affair. He threatened to post it if I don't do what he wants.""Slow down," he broke in gently. "Tell me again, what is Jace threatening you with?"I pinched the bridge of my nose. Saying it out loud made me ashamed and angry w

Darla's POVMelanie gasped loudly and slapped her palm on the table. “Oh, yes, this bastard. He's the real reason this whole thing is a mess.” She pointed toward Jace. “You think we have forgotten you?”Jace finally lifted his head, his face pale but his eyes cold. “That’s not true,” he said quietly.Melanie scoffed. “Of course you’d say that.”Xavier leaned forward in his seat. “Enough,” he said, his voice sharp, cutting across the tension like a blade. “Let’s hear him out before anyone throws accusations around.”I sat still, my fingers tightening around the edge of my skirt. The thought of people actually believing Melanie and I were fighting over Jace made me want to disappear. It was humiliating.Mavin looked serious. “Jace, these are not light accusations. People are saying you’ve been in contact with certain reporters, paying them to stir things up.”Jace’s jaw tensed. “That’s a lie. I would never do something like that.”Melanie laughed, though there was no humor in it. “Oh

Darla's POVHis lips curved, but it wasn’t a smile. It was something else. “I want you, Darla. You don't have to pretend about it anymore."My throat tightened. “Pretend about what?”“About me. About the way I feel about you. About the fact that I'm really interested in you. And I think you like me too."I swallowed hard. “You’re wrong.”“Am I?” His voice dropped, almost a whisper now, but it carried across the room like a command.I turned away, clutching at the flowers again, like they could shield me. “Xavier, you don’t understand. I can’t-”“Can’t what?” He interrupted, sharper this time. “Can’t admit you like me? or can’t be with someone like me?"My hands trembled. I curled them into fists so he wouldn’t see. “You’re arrogant. You think everything is about you.”He stood then, setting his glass on the table. I froze as I felt him coming closer again. Each step seemed louder than the last.“Maybe,” he said softly. “Or maybe I just see through you in a way nobody else does.”I sp
