CHAPTER 31

DANTE'S MIND WAS strumming with indecision as he drove into the compound of his estate. He wanted to be back with Avery, even after her reaction to him.He rubbed his cheek where Avery slapped him. It still stung, but not as much as his heart ached. As he entered the house, he saw Laura in the living room. She did not acknowledge his arrival; instead, she kept on watching TV like no one had come in. Dante snorted inwardly and went to his room. He lay on the bed, thinking about Avery and how to win her back, when Laura came in. She propped her hands on her hips and said, "You can't just leave without telling me anything."Dante sighed and looked at her. "Can't you give me a moment of peace, Laura? I just got home and I'm tired.""I know what you have been up to," she snarled. She tossed her phone on the bed. "That's you, isn't it?"Dante frowned and looked at the screen. He was shocked to see his picture with Avery and her "lover.""You left me here to go and fight over Avery!" Laura

CHAPTER 32

ADRIANOTHE CHARITY EVENT was the biggest party of the year in the city, and it was going to be filled with dignitaries, billionaires and a lot of media coverage. It would be the best way to officially expose his fake relationship with Avery.A smirk was plastered on his face as he imagined the outburst from the news. He had not dated anyone in over 3 years, not since the incident with Clarance and the birth of Iris. It had been a very messy thing that he did not wish to repeat, and cause further distress to Iris. Besides, most of the women who flirted with him knew who he was and were purely after his money. It was different with Avery. He remembered the first time he saw her in that elevator. She was disheveled and distressed, and yet, she managed to look more beautiful than any woman he had ever seen. It was a pleasant surprise when she had shown up at his suite door, crying, broken and wanting him to console her. And he had done just that.A honk revved him from his reverie. The t

CHAPTER 33

AVERY"THANK YOU FOR your advice, Doctor Avery,"I smiled and nodded, "I am glad you are healing, Edith," I said to my client, who was seated on the couch. She was battling with depression from body shaming because she was a bit on the chubby side. "And don't let anyone bully or make you feel bad about yourself, okay?"She nodded and took a tissue paper from the side table, wiping her eyes. "I am going to lose weight, but I'm not doing it for anybody.""That's right!" I nodded."I am going to do it for myself," she sniffled. The clock beeped, signaling the end of the session, but I was never in a hurry to rush my clients out of the office. I waited for some minutes until she gathered her composure, then she stood up slowly. "Thank you, Doctor Avery."She enveloped me in a warm, soft hug before she walked out. I sighed and sat down, feeling contented with my job. Edith was almost done with her therapy session; she was finally going to love and do things for herself, not other people.I

CHAPTER 34

AVERYIF NOT FOR her infuriating father, the drive with Iris was very enjoyable. The cake was delicious, and Iris basically left all of it to me as she told me about how her friend's pencil broke, and she offered to help. That was how she made friends.I often caught Adriano looking at me as I listened to Iris without interrupting."My Nana would be glad that you finished her cake," Iris said, making me look down at the plate. It was empty. "She likes it when I finish my food."Adriano slowed to a stop in front of a major designer store. "We are here."I looked at the store and all the stores around. They were well above my pay grade. I shook my head and said, "I can't shop here."Adriano rolled his eyes and handed me a black and gold card. "Take my card. It is unlimited. Just go buy anything you want. Take Iris with you." Iris snatched the card from Adriano and pushed herself out the door. I was still stunned as I got out of the car. I looked at Adriano for confirmation, and he nodde

CHAPTER 35

AVERYHER MIND SOUNDED very fixated on the idea that I was going to marry her father. She was oblivious to the hated tension that sparked between us when she was not around.I collected the packaged dress and led Iris out of the store."Why was that woman mean to you?" Iris asked.I chuckled. Maybe this child was not as oblivious as I thought. "Sometimes people do not need a reason to be mean to you," I said. "That does not mean you did any wrong, or you should go, trying to make them like you."Iris chewed on her lips thoughtfully."The clerk did not like me. She does not need to have a reason to, but It doesn't mean there is anything wrong with me." Although I knew the real reason, there was no need to burden Iris with the details of how social hierarchy works. The clerk hated me because I did not look like someone who belonged in the store. I was not poor, but I was not among the top 1% that shopped there."Maybe it is because you have prettier hair," Iris said. "And you are pretti

CHAPTER 36

ADRIANOON THE DAY of the event, Adriano was nervous like a teenage boy on prom night. He was dressed immaculately in an Italian pinstriped suit and gold accessories. Throughout the previous day, he could not keep Avery out of his mind. He could not deny that he was very much attracted to her, but he was not sure if she felt the same way.He ran his hand through his hair one last time before he went out of his room. Nana and Iris were downstairs, engrossed in a board game. Nana had agreed to take care of Iris for the night."You are ready to do," Nana said when Adriano came down the stairs.Adriano nodded. He pecked Iris on her forehead before turning to Nana. "I am. Don't hesitate to call me if anything happens.""Non succederà niente, Adriano," she said. "We will be fine." She adjusted his collar. "Go and have fun."Adriano snorted. He would try to have fun."Bye bye, Daddy," Iris said. "Say Hi to Miss Avery for me."Adriano nodded and smiled. Iris was finally speaking more and ope

CHAPTER 37

AVERYTHE PARTY WAS held in one of the biggest halls in the city. As soon we we got there, I could see a long array of super expensive cars. I released a slow breath to calm my nerves."Don't worry," Adriano said from beside me. He placed a hand on my knee and turned to look at me. I could not see his face in the darkness, but I felt his eyes. "I will be with you always."I nodded. "I am not used to being in these types of gatherings...""Let's go," he opened his door and came around to help me out.I shivered slightly as soon as I stepped out, and the chilly night air settled on my skin. He noticed it and pulled me closer."Good evening, sir," a valet said, handing a card to him and collecting the car keys.I looked around and saw some of the men walking into the hall alone. "I thought it was necessary to come with a date," I said.Adriano chuckled and shook his head."So why did you invite me?" I asked. He remained silent until we got to the hallway leading into the event hall. Ther

CHAPTER 38

AVERYI TURNED AROUND sharply in search of the woman who made the room quieten, but instead my eyes fell on a familiar face and the gleaming white teeth of Laura Hill - now Laura Vale. That would mean that Dante is not far behind."I need to get out of here now," I said to Emily."What? Why?" Emily asked. "Is it because of Clarance?"I shook my head truthfully. I don't even know what Clarance looked like. "My stepsister is here," I whispered."Your stepsister," Emily repeated. "The one that got married to your ex-husband.""Do I have another?" I asked sarcastically. "It's her."Is your ex-husband here?" Emily asked, stretching her neck and looking around."I think so," I replied. "But I don't want to find out. Let's go to another section before -""Sister!" Laura's voice rang out.Now all heads swivelled to me as Laura pushed through, muttering excuses as she passed until she came a few feet away from me. "How long has it been?" She asked, leaning in to hug me with a fake smile on her

CHAPTER 39

ADRIANOADRIANO WAS GETTING too involved with the event, and he was just beginning to enjoy himself. He had drank some glasses of champagne and recognized some of his business rivals. He looked around, trying to find where Avery went, but he could not find her. Instead, he caught her sister staring at him seductively. He scoffed and took another glass of champagne from a passing waiter and took a small sip."Are you enjoying the party, Mr Mancini?" A man said.Adriano turned, nodding. It was not a man he recognized. "Do i know you?" He asked. The man shook his head. "I am Martin," he said."Martin," the man said."Martin Roosevelt?" Adriano asked. "Aren't you Clarance's lover?"The man chuckled and nodded. "She chose to be with the bigger man." Adriano’s eyes narrowed. He didn’t like Martin’s smug tone, nor the fact that Avery was nowhere to be seen.“You’ll have to excuse me,” Adriano said flatly, dismissing Martin with the tilt of his glass. But Martin leaned in, lowering his voice

CHAPTER 40

WITHOUT HESITATING FOR a second, Adriano growled under his breath and went after Clarance. He caught her near the stairs and pulled her to the side, his grip firm on her arm.“Oops,” Clarance said with a mischievous smile, not the least bit startled as her back pressed against the wall.“What did you do, Clarance?” Adriano asked in a low and dangerous voice.“Oh, hello darling,” she whined in that falsely sweet tone that once used to soften him. “I didn’t know you would be here. What a pleasant surprise.” She arched her back deliberately, pressing closer so her belly rubbed against his crotch. “Don’t play games with me!” Adriano snarled, slamming his hand against the wall by her head. The sound cracked through the corridor. He leaned in close, his eyes sharp with fury. “I don’t know what you think you’re doing, but I suggest you stop before you hurt yourself.”Clarance only laughed, the sound light and mocking. “We both know you can’t hurt me,” she whispered. Her hand slithered up, c
