At your age, it’s a little… sad, don’t you think?” My hand froze on the dish I was scrubbing, my fingers gripping the plate just a little too tightly. I turned slowly, finally meeting Victoria’s gaze. “Excuse me?” I replied, trying to keep my voice steady. “Oh, come on. You know what I mean. A woman’s place is to have a family, isn’t it? But you, you’re… well, you’re still you, the poor girl from some family that my brother married out of pity.” I took a slow breath, my heart pounding in my chest. I could feel my patience unraveling, but I bit it back, keeping my tone even. “Thank you for your concern, Victoria,” I said politely, my smile tight. “But I think Charles and I are perfectly content with our lives the way they are.” I turned back to the sink. “Oh, I’m sure you’re content, enjoying my brother’s wealth and all,” Victoria scoffed, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
