Kael couldn’t stay still.He paced the length of the chamber like a caged wolf, his cloak abandoned on the floor, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, boots thumping loudly against the stone floor. After few steps he’d stop by the bed, his hand gripping the edge so tightly the wood creaked under his fingers.Aria lay there, pale and slick with sweat, her breath shallow.He had failed her once before. He wasn’t going to do it again.“Stay with me, Lyra,” he muttered, his voice low but heavy. He kept saying it as though repeating it could make it work. The door banged open. The healer rushed in with her bag of herbs, her skirts trailing the floor. “Alpha,” she called, her head bowed. “Get to it,” Kael barked. The healer knelt beside the bed without ceremony, her hands already at Aria’s pulse, then at her neck.“Her heartbeat is faint,” she said, her voice firm. She pulled out a small jar, poured its contents into a cup, and began stirring furiously. “Please, help me sit her up.”Kae
