“Don’t worry about it.” He strokes my hair. “I’ve taken care of it. You need to rest.”“Arabella?”“Gone. I didn’t kill her.” Robert’s eyes harden as he tells me that. I let out a sigh of relief, and he gives me a strange look. “She was going to kill you, Charlotte.”I close my eyes, my heart heavy. “I’m a fool.”“I won’t disagree with you right now,” Robert murmurs, but his tone is soft and gentle. I want to bury myself in his arms and hide away from this cruel world and my crueler fate. There’s a knock on the door, and I open my eyes to see a young woman peeking in. “Harry called me.”“Thanks, Maria.” Robert is about to get up, but my fingers dig into his sleeve. It’s an automatic response, but instead of saying anything, he simply moves closer and wraps his hand around mine.“I’m not going anywhere.” He looks up at Maria. “Can you heal her?”Maria comes forward, but there is hesitation in her steps. “She’s a vampire.”“Yes.”She swallows, and I can see her nervousness. I give her a

She’s rambling now, not realizing that tears are streaming down her face. When I touch her hands, they’re icy cold, and she’s shivering.“Charlotte,” I cut her off abruptly. “Stop talking.”She shuts up immediately, but her shaking increases.Taking off my jacket, I wrap it securely around her before saying firmly, “You’re not going anywhere. I’m not kicking you out. And nor will you let the fear of your sister drive you away from your home. Do you understand me?”She’s staring at me blankly. “I have to go. You don’t know Arabella.”“Arabella does not know me.” I rub her hands in mine, trying to warm them. “You will be safe. I’ll make sure of it. You and Mano will both be safe.”Her lower lip trembles. “When she was—When I couldn’t breathe, I kept thinking about what would happen to Mano. Who would look after her? She’s my baby, and she’d be all alone…”“No, she wouldn’t have been,” I reassure her, watching new tears spill from her eyes. “I would have taken her in.”“Really?”She’s a

“Because I don’t like minding my own business and because poking my nose into yours is so much fun,” I respond, watching the road now.She sighs, as if too tired to argue. “I got jumped by some kids from another vampire clan. My kind don’t exactly throw their own people out. They can, but it’s so rarely done that when I was expelled from the clan, obviously the news leaked to other clans. The kids went to a private school near where I was working at the time, and one of them recognized me. Anyway, they thought it would be a good idea to have some fun with me. Ricky was passing by and saw the whole thing. He came to my rescue. I had a few nasty cuts on my arms, and it’s not like I have insurance, so he offered to patch me up.”I stare straight ahead, not very happy with her nonchalant tone as she narrates the incident.“Tell me, how many times are you attacked in a year?” I try to keep my tone light, but my hands are flexing around the steering wheel.I feel Charlotte’s eyes boring hol

When I wake up, it’s to the sounds of sizzling bacon and my rumbling stomach. My whole body aches. I groan, trying to turn over, each side hurting more than the previous one. Giving up, I sit up gingerly. The skin on my left cheek is burning under the gauze, and I try to bear the pain. Sitting on the side of the bed, I study the floor blankly.Arabella showing up. The attack. Robert saving me.The memories trickle back as sleep fades away, and my soul feels heavy inside me. Hating my sister would be so easy. She has done plenty of things to me over the years for me to despise her. I hated Clyde but never her. In a way, she’s still my weakness. Why haven’t you killed yourself yet?Arabella’s words eat at me.Then, a bitter laugh leaves my lips.Indeed. Why haven’t I?I can feel my thoughts taking a dark turn, and I look out the window at the gray sky, my fingers digging into the bed sheet. I may not be as strong or as successful as those of my kind, but I dragged myself out of a shit s

His words make me feel horrible. The worst part is that I know it’s the truth. If Robert ends up marrying a woman from his pack who finds his scars repulsive, he will be miserable for the rest of his life. I don’t want Robert to be miserable. His happiness matters to me.“My wolf is crazy about you, and so am I,” he whispers. “Give me a good reason why you don’t want me. If it’s my face, you can tell me. I won’t get upset.”My hand lifts to caress his left cheek, and my lips twist of their own accord. “I don’t care about your scars. I think I might even have a matching set now. I just don’t want you to be in a position where you will suffer because of me. I’m not w—”“Don’t you dare say you’re not worth it, Charlotte.” Robert takes my hands and kisses the tips of my fingers. “To me, you’re worth it. I want you. You drive me insane, every part of you. So, what else is there? What other reason do you have?”I try to think of something, but my mind is going blank as Robert’s teeth nibble
