AN UNGRATEFUL SON

A heavy silence fell in the room and beyond. I couldn’t see Vincent’s face, but I could imagine the rage burning inside him. I myself was shaking from where I was, so what of him? How was he going to handle the shame? The embarrassment would swallow him whole before he could even take up that mop and the bucket. God!“This is unacceptable, Dad!” Vincent muttered. “You can’t humiliate me like this. A janitor? What do you expect my friends and everyone in this hospital to say and think of me?”“You should have thought about what people would say about your failure before planning to be a failure. I am willing to bear the shame; you should not be having a hard time given that you brought this upon yourself.”“But, Dad, come on. To hell with being a surgeon then. Give me a better position in one of yours then. You can do that, right? Yeah?”The boy had balls, huh! I mean, where was the apology for failing his father like that? Where was his remorse? His pity for his dad, who had worked so

A DANGEROUS TEMPTATION

The silence between us stretched to eternity. I allowed him to browse every inch of me with his eyes, and he took pleasure in it. Maybe he would finally find whatever he was searching for. Would be satisfied and done with me so that we could get rid of the awkwardness between us. Maybe he needed that much time to get rid of the disgust he now felt after knowing that I was a whore that shamelessly screwed both father and son.Tick, tock! Tick, tock!Seconds turned into minutes, but Dr. Aldrich did not show any signs of cutting his stare soon. From head to toe, and up again, he kept staring with the same intensity. And that dangerously dark look in his eyes—it never faded even for a second. And still, I could not figure it out.I cleared my throat, snapping him to reality because he was so lost scanning my body for reasons that only he and his demons knew about. Reasons that I was itching to know. Reasons I would have given my all to know.He stopped staring and just strolled and perche

NOT A MISTAKE

Everything was so wrong—what he was doing to me was wrong. What I was allowing myself to feel was wrong. Being close like that was so damn wrong!I jerked back, putting space between us. “No.” My voice was hoarse, my hands clenched into fists. My palms were sweaty, but he couldn’t see that. “You need to stop.” My heart ached at my own words.Dr. Aldrich arched a brow, clearly amused. “Are you sure?”Didn’t he want to?I swallowed hard, trying to steady myself. “Yes. We should forget what happened between us. It was a mistake. A one-time thing. From now on, we act like strangers. For the sake of a professional working relationship.”“There is nothing like a mistake where two adults are in consent over something. At least that is what this old guy here knows.”And he thought that was funny? For shame’s sake, I would have chosen to just die of heartaches rather than sleep with my ex’s dad if I knew. Why is he taking this matter so lightly?“Did you know all this before now? You knew who

A MATURE TALK

“But still, you can’t give up, right? You have to keep trying to bring them to the right. There is always a way of redeeming everything. Just like our patients, we don’t give up on them even when we know there is no hope. We keep encouraging them, giving them hope.” I stopped before he could nickname me a chatterbox or a parrot. But he smiled, faintly but genuinely, like I had really spoken some sense. “What? You are going to lecture this old man now?”I smiled. “No. I don’t have the knowledge nor the capacity to lecture someone as experienced as you, Doc. But sometimes even the young can give advice to the older. Well, age is just a number, they say.”He nodded, his face still bright, the smile warming up the room. “Indeed. Maturity has no age.” His words carried a hidden meaning, and the way he was staring at me again was beginning to seem weird.I took a step back. “I should be going now if that is all.”He kept quiet, just doing his usual staring. Whatever he was seeing in me, wha

SOME CHANGES

He shook his head. “I can never stand in the way of your success, Leylla. But I will be here for you. For anything you will ever need.” He took my hand and kissed it.Why was he contradicting me?If he didn’t want to be in the way of my career, if he was certain that he was a distraction that I should not allow to get to me, why was he kissing me like that? He was sure of what he was doing to me. Why was he confusing me? Why would he urge me to forget him and then turn around and kiss me so senselessly? But oh well, it was not like I was planning on getting distracted on this path anyway. He wanted me to focus on my career. Then by all means, because that had been my plan all along.I slipped from his hold and stood up. I shook off that heat that was still clinging to me and took in a very long breath. I started walking out, but his words stayed with me.“You will be working with me.”I turned around. Wasn’t that obvious? We were in the same space. He was going to be my senior. “I kno

AN ACCIDENT

I wasn’t sure I could resist him for long, but I was glad I had succeeded even just that once. But my body was screaming at me even as I walked down the alleys.I was lost in my thoughts, drowning in the storm that had crashed into my life in the form of Dr. Aldrich. My mind was so full of him—his presence, his power, the way everything had changed because of him, the way he was effortlessly arousing me—that I forgot to watch my step.Bad luck struck at the worst moment. The janitors had just cleaned the floor. It was wet, if not full of water, and slippery. The moment my foot touched the edge of the staircase, I lost my balance. My body tilted forward.I slipped, crashing down the steps. My limbs flailed, my clothes soaked in the soapy water as I tumbled down, swimming through the watery stairway all the way down. The world blurred. Pain exploded through me with each hard impact against the staircase.I screamed. For help. I tried searching for something to hold on to, but there was n

GETTING TREATED

I barely remembered the rush up the stairs. It was only the sounds of pain and that I had developed for my tormentors that lingered. The hand was feeling numb, but the pain was there. So deep. The cold of the floor and water still clung to my skin. My clothes were soaked and stuck to me like another layer of my skin, and my arm throbbed as if the bones were screaming. Yet, in the blur of pain, I could still feel his touch. The way he held me. The way he effortlessly dodged everything and everyone as he ran up the stairs and corridors. He could see my tears. Could feel my pains. But he did not say a word. Did not ask anything. And I appreciated that. I hated him seeing me crying, but the pain was unbearable. And he happened to be my only solace. I rested my head on his chest and let tears flow. Let him carry me to wherever. He pushed open the door to his private office, a room that felt too grand, too clean, too pure for someone like me in that moment—drenched, broken, humiliated. But h

THE BLAMES

I stiffened. My heart immediately began to race. All the bitterness I had harbored inside rose to the surface. It bubbled inside in raging waves. He walked in slowly, like a man inspecting his prey. His face carried no concern. No sympathy. Only twisted amusement. And he shamelessly did not even care to fake anything.“You look awful,” Vincent said with a cruel little smile. “I never knew karma could humble someone like this.”Karma? If anybody needed a face-slapping karma, wasn’t that him and his wicked fiancé? They were the reason I was lying on that bed. The fucking reason I was writhing in pain. But, in all my years, I knew one thing: silence is the best remedy for cheap arguments and meaningless things such as the one that stood tall before me. I didn’t answer. He walked closer and folded his arms across his chest, his gaze dropping to my bandaged arm. “That must hurt like hell. Do you need me to massage it? You have always craved my touch.”Yeah. Before. When I was a fool in love

THE RIFT DEEPENS

Dr. Aldrich shook his head in defeat. “It is pointless trying to reason with a fool. And it saddens me so much that you have turned this way. I am not happy as your father.”Vincent scoffed with so much detest. “And I am a proud son after all that you are doing? Trading the affection meant for me for this woman? You are acting like she has you wrapped around her finger. You defend her, protect her, praise her, trust her, place your hope on her…”“Because she deserves it,” Dr. Aldrich snapped, cutting his son off. “She has shown all the potential, and I am not the only one who is a witness to that. I did not write all those reports in her profile, did I?”Vincent glared at me. His cold glare lingered for far too long, shooting daggers that I knew meant the trouble was not yet over. Then he took a step closer to Dr. Aldrich. They faced each other, like two antagonists ready to tear each other into pieces. “And the way to look at her? The way you rushed to help her? The way you carried h

CLOSED SUBJECT

I didn’t need words. Not right now. His presence was enough. And he, all he seemed to have at that moment was nothing but an unreadable expression. But beneath it, I saw a hint of care and pain.I looked up at him, eyes burning.“You know I didn’t ask for any of this, right?” I whispered. He nodded once, still holding my hand. Then, gently, he took the medicine and helped me sit up enough to take it. When I winced, he supported my back.He made sure I was comfortable again, tucking the blanket around me.“These will help with the pain.” He handed me the painkillers and a bottle of water that he opened for me.I took them and handed him back the bottle.“Try to rest. You need a lot of rest.” He said after resting the water on the table.I nodded, opting not to be stubborn.“I will watch over you while I try to work.” He added.Watch over me? What about his son? He was probably being roasted in Chief Rooney’s office. Didn’t he need to be there for his son?“Aren’t you going to your son? He
