Chapter 142RAMON"I'm here," I said, moving to kneel beside Lake. "Ollie, it's Papa. I'm here too. Mama and I are both here, and we're not going to let anything happen to you. But we need you to come out from under the bed so the doctors can make sure you're healing properly."I could see movement under the bed—Ollie shifting, maybe trying to see us better. "It's really you?" he asked. "It's really Mama and Papa?""It's really us," Lake confirmed. "We're right here, baby. We're not going anywhere. Please come out."More movement, and then slowly, so slowly, I saw small hands appear at the edge of the bed frame. Ollie was crawling forward, emerging from his hiding spot inch by careful inch. When his face came into view, my heart broke. He looked so much worse than when he'd been unconscious. His eyes were wild and unfocused, pupils dilated unevenly. His skin was pale except for the angry bruises covering his face and the bandage wrapped around his head where the head wound had been. H

Chapter 144RAMONThe next morning brought a cautious optimism I hadn't felt in days. Ollie was awake. Confused and traumatized, yes, but awake and coherent enough to recognize people, to communicate, to show signs of the boy we all knew and loved.I'd spent the night in a chair beside Lake's cot, watching both of them sleep, ready to jump up at the first sign that either of them needed me. Lake had held Ollie's hand all night, even in sleep, like he was afraid if he let go, Ollie might disappear again.Around seven in the morning, Elena appeared with food—actual home-cooked food, not hospital cafeteria offerings. She'd somehow managed to access the hospital's kitchen facilities and had made Ollie's favorite: chocolate chip pancakes with strawberries."He needs to eat," she'd said firmly, setting down the tray. "And so do you two. When was the last time either of you had a proper meal?"I couldn't remember. Days, maybe. Time had become fluid and meaningless in this hospital limbo we'd

Chapter 146 RAMON"One month," Rhodes finally said. "We give it one month. Let Ollie recover, let Lake start therapy, let things stabilize. But Ramon—after that month, you need to tell him. Because he deserves to know. And the longer you wait, the worse it's going to be when the truth comes out."One month. I could do one month. Could pretend for one month that everything was normal, that Ollie was just the child I'd chosen to love rather than the biological son I'd unknowingly created."There's something else," Rhodes said, returning to his desk and pulling out another document. "I ran Ollie's full genetic panel while we had the sample. Just to check for any hereditary conditions we should be aware of. And Ramon—you need to see this."He handed me a paper covered in medical terminology I didn't fully understand. But one section was highlighted: *Genetic markers consistent with familial Mediterranean fever, carrier status.*"What does this mean?" I asked."It means Ollie carries a ge

Chapter 148LAKE"I know," he said, but I wasn't sure he believed it. Ramon had always been the protector, the strong one, the alpha who took care of everyone else. Letting himself be vulnerable—that didn't come naturally to him."I have good news," I said, changing the subject because I could feel him pulling back again, retreating into whatever thoughts were haunting him. "Rhodes examined me yesterday while you were meeting with your brothers. Did a full checkup, made sure everything from—from what Samuel did—was healing properly."Ramon tensed against me. "And?""And I'm okay," I said quickly. "Some bruising still, some tenderness. But nothing permanent. Nothing that won't heal. Rhodes said I was lucky—that Samuel could have done much worse damage but didn't. And the—the other thing—" I swallowed hard, forcing myself to say it. "The sexual assault. Rhodes said there's no tearing, no internal damage. Samuel didn't actually—he didn't finish. You stopped him in time."I felt Ramon shu

Chapter 150RAMONI stood in the hospital chapel at two in the morning, staring at the small altar without really seeing it. I wasn't religious—hadn't been since I was a child and my mother had dragged us to mass every Sunday. But tonight, I needed somewhere quiet. Somewhere away from Lake's trusting eyes and Ollie's innocent smile. Somewhere I could finally let myself fall apart without anyone watching. The paternity test results had been sitting in my pocket for three days now. Three days of carrying this knowledge like a weight around my neck. Three days of looking at Ollie and seeing myself in every feature, every expression, every gesture. Three days of wondering how the hell I was going to tell Lake the truth.*You have one month*, Rhodes had said. One month to figure out how to destroy my mate's trust in me. One month to find the words to explain that the kind alpha Lake remembered from that terrible night—the one who'd made him feel safe, who'd been gentle with him—was me. Tha
