I had somehow fallen asleep to Alpha Lucas comforting me. I shouldn’t have been surprised. It had been an exhausting day. I was still badly injured and healing. I was emotionally raw from everything that had happened. So, really, it wasn’t any real wonder that I gave in to something that just felt nice for once. But as I woke up, I noticed that Alpha Lucas’s arms were still holding me. My legs were draped over his lap and my head was resting on his chest. I slowly sat up, realizing he was also asleep. I didn’t want to wake him, but I needed to move. My body was getting stiff and I needed the restroom. So, I moved cautiously, removing his arms gently. I had managed to shift one off of me when my stomach betrayed me. A loud growl echoed through the quiet room, protesting that I hadn’t eaten since yesterday.Alpha Lucas stirred awake. “Sutton… what’s wrong? Are you okay?”His tone sounded so genuine and sincere that I felt my cheeks flush.“I’m sorry,” I said meekly. “I was trying not to

I tried to fall asleep in the guest bedroom, but it was no use. Rhonen wouldn’t stop pacing, going from whining to snarling and back to whining because we weren’t with Sutton. I would have let him run it off, but I wasn’t going to leave Sutton here by herself. I didn’t usually keep staff here at my private residence and Jaden was back at the packhouse. So there wasn’t anyone here to keep her safe. I didn’t know how else to calm Rhonen down, so I shifted and let him sleep outside the bedroom door until morning. We woke around sunrise. I showered and dressed before going down to the kitchen to make breakfast. Sutton would be ready for something more substantial than she’d had so far. I was almost done cooking when a far more delicious scent than breakfast hit me.“So you’re the great cook you were boasting about,” Sutton’s voice came from the doorway.I grinned. “I’m afraid not. But she won’t be back today,” I said. “But I can manage something a little more than edible at least. Are you

I put my interaction with Alpha Lucas out of my mind and focused on getting cleaned up. Well, as best as I could. The feeling of the hot water washing over me had helped. It was hard for my stiff muscles not to relax under the therapeutic spray. When I got out and dried off, I took the shopping bag that Alpha Lucas had brought for me. There was a pair of jeans and a simple, long-sleeved blouse on top. Below them were several stacks of undergarments. More than I would need. A lot more.I was hesitant to accept anything more than the bare minimum from Alpha Lucas and taking anything from his mate felt off as well. Considering his advances towards me. However, who knew how long it would take for me to get set up somewhere. Arguably, it would be easier if I had more than nothing. It would be hard to get a job with nothing to wear. With a frustrated sigh, I relented to the practicality. I dressed quickly and looked for a place to stash the bag for the time being. Opening a dresser drawer,

I hauled Sutton upstairs, slamming the bedroom door behind me before depositing her on the bed. She scrambled back, putting space between us.“Why would you think I already had a mate?” I demanded. “Who told you that?”“No one,” she said strongly. “Well, I suppose you did. The way you described the mate bond… How else would you know that it could feel like that? Because that’s certainly not my experience. Then Tarrah shows up. She’s beautiful and kind and marked… of course, she has to be…”“Sutton, stop,” I commanded. She froze but still wouldn’t look at me. I grabbed her chin, forcing her to look me in the eye. “Listen to me. Take a deep breath.”Pride and frustration alike filled me as I felt her jaw clamp shut in my hand. I sighed but didn’t release her, pulling her to her feet instead.“Just do it, Sutton,” I ordered again, more gently this time.Relenting, she closed her eyes and inhaled, long and slow. I leaned in, my lips brushing against the crest of her ear.“Now, tell me, d

Lucas didn’t try to pull me back, but he did keep a hold of my hand. Still, he noticed my shift in attitude.“We’ll take this one step at a time, Sutton,” he said gently. “I’ll do whatever you need me to do to gain your trust. Just say the word.”“It’s not that simple,” I replied.“I don’t expect this to be easy,” he assured me. “But I want a fair chance. Is that something you think you can do?”I chewed on my lip for a moment before nodding. I still felt that slight uneasy feeling of anxiety, like bile waiting at the end of my throat for the first opportunity to come up. Because in reality — what choice did I have? I could be stuck here scared and constantly on edge or I could try to have an open mind and have at least the illusion of contentment for a while.“I have an idea,” Lucas said, drawing me from my thoughts. “Come with me.”Still holding my hand, Lucas got up and pulled me behind him. Making his way through the house, he went back downstairs. He led me into a room that was s
