An unearthly howl kicked up behind me, chilling my blood. 
In full Wolf form now I fled thru the trees, veering side to side like a bunny being chased by, well, wolves. 
I was panicking and for the time being I didn’t know what else to do.
Water!
I needed to get to the river! There, I might be able to lose them in the rushing water. If I went into the center of the river, I’d be able to forge my way upriver, and hopefully shake them off my scent.
It was my best chance, and would at least buy me some time until one of the Alpha males back at camp conquered the other. 
My chest tightened.
Red!
My Red had to be okay, he just had to!
If he didn’t win, I had no desire to even live on, I would be so devstated.
I ran faster, pushing myself as if that would somehow endow some metaphysical strength to my True Mate.
Red was my True Mate, my one true Alpha, I knew that now, deep in the marrow of the bones of my very soul.

As hard and fast as I ran, the males were still stronger and faster

‘STOP! SHE IS MINE!!!’ 
A powerful voice ricocheted thru all of our minds collectively. 
The wolf atop me ceased rutting at once, withdrawing his throbbing shaft mere seconds before detonating.
He fell off me, whimpering and trembling, to writhe upon the ground as if he were on fire. 
Moments later, Red came tearing into the clearing, and he was RED. Head-to-toe, he was absolutely drenched in blood. How much of it was his, I could not yet tell, but most of it had to be Braiden’s.
Braiden had fallen.
All was silent and empty in the forest now, and in the sacred channel between our minds. 
The Alpha of the Aspen Pack was dead…
Everyone fell back, heads bowed in respect for their leader who had been defeated in battle. 
Now the question was, would Red step up to fill that role of Alpha? 
Would he be our next Pack leader? Or would he choose to take me and leave, starting our own Pack?

The Hunters Unfortunately, the moment of bliss was only that. A moment in time. The moment got shattered right to Hell by a volley of gunshots. Distracted as they all had been, no one heard or even smelled the Hunters coming. The Wolves were converged upon, some of them sustaining serious injuries as silver buckshot ripped thru their fur. For the Luna and the Alpha, however, it was silver filled tranq darts that pierced their unsuspecting hides. Misha, being smaller, collapsed almost instantly to the ground, unconscious. Red, however, was easily three times her size and he wasn’t so easily felled. Also, it was now his Mate and his baby that were in jeopardy. Seeing them in danger sent him into a wild Berserker-like rage. He quite literally saw RED, and he turned on the Hunters and tore through them as a blood storm of claws and fangs, killing several of the Hunters. The rest were forced to retreat, but they were carrying the now human body of the Luna with them.

“Well, that was an unmitigated fucking disaster.” Murdoch spat a mouthful of blood into the fire. “We lost many good men tonight.” The leader said somberly, speaking to what was left of their Hunting party. “And we will mourn them properly. But we got the Luna. The Alpha of the Aspen Pack is dead. We all saw his body. Their numbers are scattered right now, and let’s not forget that we killed some of them, too!”“Yes, but did we kill the Lone Wolf?” Murdoch muttered. “We saw him fall, but is he still alive? If he is, we need to find him, and finish him. We should move out now, and go back for him.”“Our men need to recover.” Countered the leader, Lars Oswald the Third, was his full name by birth. “We need to regroup, dress our injured, cover and protect our dead. Some of the men are even asking to be able to take the deceased home to their mothers’.” Murdoch grunted. “What sentimental rubbish! We need to act, now! I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.Red, working with the Hunters?! I suddenly felt like I was going to be sick again. This was all a nightmare and surely I would wake soon. Everything would be right again, I’d be naked, pregnant and in love in Red’s arms, with his baby growing inside me. All of this would just be a bad memory of a bad dream, fading away until I forgot all about it.While I sipped water bitterly in my cage, Red went and joined the other men over by the fire. They gave him a shirt and a bowl of the foul stew. I could only look on in devastated disbelief.This was just a nightmare, this was just a nightmare, this was just a nightmare!The Hunters seemed wary around Red, but they accepted his presence among them grudgingly enough, and the feeling appeared to be mutual.
