House name Vale

KYRA I knew something was wrong the second Nicole frowned, and the smile on her lips disappeared Nicole looked more serious than ever. She stood across from me in my private spot that I'd found, and she invaded. Too still, too composed. A folder rested in her hands like it weighed more than it really should.“Say it,” I told her.She didn’t soften it. Nicole never does. “Susan attends the same academy as our Jacelet.”My heartbeat skipped. There are a thousand academies in the world. A thousand schools. A thousand coincidences. But Nicole didn’t look like she was talking about coincidence.“Are you sure? The same academy?” I asked carefully. She stepped forward and placed the file on my laps. The crest stamped in black wax made my stomach turn before she even answered."Gryphon Academy, and that's not all," her voice dropped to a low whisper, "They are both in the same assassin family house,"Assassin blood.Assassin legacy.Assassin family.“House Vale,” Nicole said quietly. “Both

Leaving

KYRA "Kyra" Nicole barged into our rooms, holding a big file.I sat up, staring at her questioningly. "I brought pictures," she announced My stomach dropped, she really was taking it serious.Nicole spread it out across the bed like it was a treasure map, like we weren’t staring at something that could get us killed. A glossy sheet. Faces arranged in neat rows. Every student from the Academy. Every name printed beneath each photograph in precise black ink.She had gotten it from the black market. It was smuggled in, expensive, illegal and necessary.“Look,” she whispered, her finger dragging down the columns.I leaned closer. There were different names,Peter.Emma.Susan.My chest tightened.Susan’s face stared back at me, familiar, almost soft in the captured moment. I really don't want to believe anything until I hear from her point of view. And beneath her image was Susan, daughter of the realm ruler, and also House of Viremont.Viremont.The assassin family.Nicole’s finger

Going back

KYRA Both of us stood still, holding our breath.Astrid stepped into view from the shadow of a building. She looked calm, composed, and the exact replica of Zyran's emotions It was why she was the Beta. Her gaze dropped to our packed belongings. Then, I slowly lifted to my face questioningly “To the Academy,” I said evenly. Her lips curved slightly, not a smile. A warning.“Without informing the Alpha?”“This concerns me.”“It concerns the entire pack,” Astrid replied smoothly. "You're a Luna in training here with the selection in just a few days, or maybe it's hours, o don't care, but this is going to look bad on the Lycan King. You have no idea, right?Nicole shifted beside me, tense."I don't care about what you do with your life or what you choose to do with your time, not don't you think your excursions should wait until after?"Neither of us said anything.Astrid’s eyes flicked between us. Then, subtly, to the file Nicole carrying.“You’ve been digging and making findings,” s

Welcome to hell

KYRA The next morning felt weird and wrong We should be out there.Nicole and I hadn’t spoken much after Astrid stopped us at the gate. We’d returned to our room in silence, the picture folded and hidden beneath a loose floorboard. I barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Susan’s face, laughing at me, and I also thought of Noah’s absence too.Now I stood in the Luna training hall, the floor cold beneath my boots, the air thick with resolve and excitement. This was our last session before selection.“Focus, Kyra!” The warden yelled at me.I tightened my grip on the training blade and lunged at my partner, some girl I don't know. Our weapons clashed. The other Lunas circled in pairs, skirts hitched, hair braided tight."Control your breath, control your stance, control your heart." Ian yelled alongside The doors creaked open.It was subtle and quiet. But every girl heard it.I didn’t look at first. I finished my movement, twisted my wrist, and disarmed my partner cleanl

Proce yourself

KYRA When I walked back into the training hall, every single pair of eyes were on me.Hungrily, like I had the answers to all of their questions or like I had to step up on the podium and explain myself. The air had changed. It wasn’t about technique anymore, or balance, or training, or composure. It was about him.I felt it the moment the doors shut behind me.Miss Helen stood at the center of the room, arms crossed. “Positions.”No one moved. They were staring past me.At Jake.Of course he’d followed. He leaned casually against the wall like he hadn’t just detonated a bomb in my life. His were arms folded, expression neutral and observing.Observing me.Heat crawled up my spine.I walked back to my place without looking at him. I would not give them the satisfaction. I would not look like the unstable ex dragging drama into her final evaluation week.“Resume,” Maelis ordered sharply. But the whispers didn’t stop.“He’s the Alpha King's half brother?”“Did you see how she dragged

Leave

KYRA We've been at it for a while now, no one was backing out. When I walked back in the circle again, I didn’t look at him, just like I ignored the whispers going around. If I did, I might’ve done something reckless.Miss Helen's voice rang out. “Come on, you both, let's end this already, Kyra, Eve.”Tension cut through the hall.Eve stepped forward with a calm smile. Unlike the others, she wasn’t drooling any longer. She wasn’t psyched with Jake's presence. She was steady and looked controlled.Good.I needed more of our fight. We bowed.Eve moved fast, with precise footwork and clean angles. She didn’t overextend like a fool trying to impress a man against a wall. She was fighting to win, just like I am.She aimed for my shoulder, I twisted, redirected, and countered low.She blocked. Our swords locked.“You really are distracted,” she murmured.“Try me.”She spun, attempting to catch my flank.I dropped low, swept her footing, but she recovered mid-fall, rolling cleanly.A murmu

Resolve it

KYRA The doors to Zyran’s office loomed ahead. It was barely scary, and speaking about Alpha Kings, it's mist certainly been a while since I saw him or even caught a glimpse of him.The guards straightened as I approached.“I need to see the Alpha King.”They hesitated.Of course they did.“I’ll inform him,” one said.“Inform him that I’m not leaving unless I'm attended to.”Minutes later, the doors opened.I stepped inside.Zyran stood by the window, hands clasped behind his back. Dark coat. Immaculate posture. The room itself felt colder than the corridors. He didn’t turn around immediately.“Luna trainee Kyra,” he said calmly. “You’ve abandoned your session.”What was with the cold attitude?“It's concluded.” I replied He didn't say anything. He finally faced me, his eyes cold and hard. There was nothing warm about him.Nothing inviting.“I assume this concerns my guest,” he said.“Is he really your half-brother?” I asked, straight to it.His expression didn’t change.“Yes.”His

A letter to the palace

KYRA A message arrived in the early hours of the day. Not through the main gates. Not through official channels. It came wrapped around a black-feathered arrow that embedded itself into the outer courtyard pillar during guard rotation. It was precise, deliberate, and public. This was done purposefully. By the time I stepped onto the balcony overlooking the lower courtyard, a small crowd had already formed. Soldiers, the guards, servants pretending not to stare, and a few of the Lunas in training. Astrid stood near the pillar, examining the letter without touching it.Zyran stood several feet away, hands behind his back.Cold, unreadable.I descended the steps slowly. The parchment tied to the arrow was sealed with dark wax, embossed with the Academy’s crest.I recognized it because of the investigation Nicole and I had done.My stomach tightened. They never sent messages directly to the palace. That has never happened before. Instead, they asked to be summoned or be in the presence

Another attack

KYRA "No," I replied. "I don't have anything to tell you."."Anything at all?"I shook my head, "Nothing,"Our eyes locked. He was definitely searching for loopholes in my soulFor fear, or anything that indicated I was lying.I gave him nothing. He turned back to Astrid. “Prepare a response. Make it as diplomatic as possible and delayed.”Astrid nodded and moved to issue orders.Everyone began to disperse. But the damage was done. The Academy wanted Susan and whoever the heck Emma was back.Jake’s voice came from behind me.“Interesting timing.”I stiffened.I hadn’t heard him approach.Of course I hadn’t.He stepped beside me, gaze still on the arrow lodged in the wall.“They wouldn’t dare send that if they weren’t confident,” he continued.“Confident in what?” I asked coldly.“In leverage.”I turned to face him fully.“What are you talking about? Care to explain?”He tilted his head slightly.“No.”My stomach tightened.“They lost two trainees,” he said, rolling his eyes. “But the

Getting rid of traces

KYRA Suddenly, a thought crossed my mind, like a light bulb that suddenly went on as I watched the guards scrub blood from stone like it was just another stain. It wasn’t.The air still felt weird.Jake hadn’t moved. He stood near the shattered window, staring out into the dark like he could see the Academy itself lurking beyond the trees.I wanted to question how he knew about the academy, but this was Jake here. He's smart, and privy to informationI watched him.And the thought formed before I could stop it.You came. Then this happened. My jaw tightened.“Funny,” I said quietly. He didn’t turn. “What is?”“Nothing happened for months.” I stepped closer. “No messages. No threats. No blades through windows.”Now he looked at me.“And?”“And then you arrive.”His expression didn’t change.“Careful, Kyra.”“No,” I said sharply. “You be careful.”The last of the servants exited the hall. It was just us now.And the scent of blood lingering in the air.“You show up,” I continued, voic
