CHAPTER 1 Today, I got released for a crime I hadn't committed in the first place. Sudden lights snap me out of my thoughts as the sound of clicking drags me back to the present. Reporters. Fucking reporters. A bunch of them flooded me at once, crowding me as they took shots after shots, shouting incoherent words at me. Words that I had to strain my ears to hear. Honestly, I wish I hadn't. “It's Mrs. Clara, the ex of Mr. Derrick!” Ex? What the hell were they talking about? I shake my head a bit, not wanting to pay them any heed as I try to push through them. Reporters and their gibbering. “Ma'am! What do you have to say after three years?” Where the hell are they coming from? I push harder, ducking my head to avoid more cameras. “Are you even supposed to be out yet? The police claimed your case was rather dire. Is that so?” Urgh, for Christ's sake, let me pass! I try to duck further away, but a sharp pain soon stings my skull as someone mistakenly tugs at my hair. I’

CHAPTER 2 My heart was thudding loudly as I stepped back into the empty mansion. It's been three years since I last stepped foot inside, and I realized that the television was on. My brows drew together in confusion as I stepped into the living room, where the TV was roaring in full volume. Who had turned it on? As these thoughts swirled in my head, my eyes were soon drawn to the images displayed on the large screen. The pixels unblurred, and I realized what was currently playing was... me. The wedding I had been dragged out of, my husband's wedding, was trending mostly because I dared to point a gun at the golden girl of the people, the actress they worshipped. The woman is now married to my husband. Comments flooded the bottom of the screen in an endless stream. People who didn’t know me but hated me anyway were typing cruel words. [She deserves to be taken back to prison for ruining this event!] [How dare she take a gun to the wedding? She's a thug!] [She’s always been

CHAPTER 3 My breath caught in my throat, the sight before me nearly ripped my soul apart. A little girl curled up on the edge of the bed, her tiny fists scrubbing at her wet cheeks; beside her lay a broken lamp. But it wasn’t her tears that froze me—it was her eyes. Those round brown eyes, framed with long lashes, were mine. Her straight nose looked so much like Derrick's that I didn’t need anyone to confirm what my heart already screamed. This was my baby. “Rose..” My lips still remembered her name. That was the same name I had whispered against her soft hair when she was only hours old. I still remember it after three years. Her head jerked up in confusion as she blinked at me. “Rose. It’s me.” Her tiny mouth parted. And then she asked the question that shattered me. “Who are you?” The words struck harder than anything could. My knees went weak, but I forced myself to stay upright and kept my gaze steady on her. “I’m your mother.” I paused. “I’m your mother, Rose.” R

CHAPTER 4 My chest tightened as I walked through the glass doors of my company the next day. I had been gone for three years, while I left the company in Derrick's hands. My name was still emblazoned across the wall in bold gold letters. It was my father’s legacy, the only thing I had left of him. But the moment I walked into the lobby, I knew something wasn’t right. The receptionists wouldn’t even meet my eyes. And once I got into my office, I saw some men in black suits waiting for me. “Mrs. Clara.” One of the men said as they rose from the couch. I frowned. “And you are?” They exchanged glances, then handed me a leather folder. “We are representatives from Merry Loans, and we're here to discuss repayment.” “Repayment?” The word tasted bitter on my tongue. I hadn’t borrowed a dime in my life. So what was going on? When I opened the folder, my heart stopped in my chest as I saw the outrageous numbers scrawled across the papers. It was the type of loan that would bleed a co

CHAPTER 5 I never thought heartbreak could evolve into something... deeper. The pain I felt after hearing Spencer’s revelations about the sins Derrick had hidden behind his charming smile was too much. However, I rejected Spencer's offer. I didn't trust him. But when I entered the mansion, I heard laughter. Getting to the living room, I saw Florida in Derrick's lap, both of them kissing passionately, practically devouring each other's mouths. Pain overtook me again. And I turned away to escape the torture, but Florida’s voice made me halt. “Oh, for God’s sake, Clara.” She snapped, shoving Derrick’s arm off her waist as she stood up. “Can you stop lurking around like a ghost? Why don’t you just accept the truth that your marriage is over? Derrick is mine now, so go rent an apartment while he processes your divorce.” Her words struck me harder than a slap. My lips parted, but no sound came out. Derrick rose calmly and adjusted his shirt. “Florida is right.” He said. “You need

CHAPTER 6 Clara's POV The headline doesn’t make sense at first. I stare at it, waiting for my brain to catch up. After a gruesomely long while, it finally does. [CLARA LAURENT STALKS EX-HUSBAND DERRICK ANTHONY] My thumb hovers over the screen, then scrolls automatically as I hastily refresh the pages. Article after article loads, all saying the fucking same thing in different words. Anonymous sources, concerned insiders. Claims that I had been showing up uninvited, refusing to accept the end of my marriage, and creating disturbances. Mentally unwell. My chest tightens. “This isn’t real,” I mutter. I scroll faster, panic creeping in as I recognize some photos. The gate. The driveway. I was standing outside the house last night, my face half-hidden, frozen in a moment I didn’t know was being recorded. So this is what she's been doing. “You’re shaking.” Florida’s voice comes from behind me. I turn slowly and see she’s leaning against the doorframe, arms crossed and watching

CHAPTER 7 Clara's POV The doors to the ambulance slam shut, sealing me out. I’m left standing on the pavement, bare feet numb against concrete, watching red lights flash against the evening. Someone asks me to move back, and another voice tells me to get out of the way. But I don’t answer. Rose.. All I can see is Rose’s small body strapped to a stretcher through the rear window. Her leg is immobilized, and her face looks so still and pale. Soon, the siren blares, and then the ambulance is gone from sight. I don’t remember how long I stood there. || An hour later, I’m sitting in a restaurant I don’t remember choosing. A waiter asks if I’m ready to order, and I nod without looking at him. When the food arrives, I don’t remember ordering that either. My phone sits beside my plate, face down. I keep staring at it anyway. When it finally rings, I sigh. “Clara.” I straighten immediately, every muscle going rigid. “Tell me.” I don’t bother with hello. There’s a pause on the

CHAPTER 8 Clara's POV “Spencer.. Anthony?” I repeated the name. How does Alisha know him? My eyes snapped up to Alisha's, a mix of surprise and curiosity etched on my face. Alisha's expression was calm, but I detected a little curiosity in her eyes. “He came here looking for you earlier today.” She said, “He said he was a business partner of yours.” My brows creased tightly together. Alisha seemed to read my mind. “You barely associated with other guys, Clara, because of Derrick, so it's quite the shocker.” I felt a pang of discomfort at the mention of Derrick's name, but my attention was focused on Alisha's words. Spencer Anthony was a name that brought back memories, memories I'd locked away. I also remembered that at the moment, I had yet to give him a response. “Spencer Anthony,” I repeated, trying to sound casual. “What did he want?” Alisha hummed. “He said he was worried about you, that you both had some business dealings to sort out.” I raised an eyebrow. Business d

CHAPTER 9 Clara's POV Fucking paparazzi. I froze, Alisha's grip on my arm tightening. The headlights flashed, and another herd of paparazzi spilled into the alley, cameras clicking wildly. “Clara! Over here!” “What's your response to Florida's allegations?” Alisha cursed under her breath. “We need to move. Now.” She yanked me toward a large building opposite the street, a clothing boutique, still open despite the late hour. I ducked into the boutique, Alisha right behind me. The door swung shut, muffling the paparazzi's shouts. We were instantly swallowed by racks of glittering dresses and perfume-scented air. Alisha grabbed a hoodie off the rack and tossed it at me. “Put this on.” I pulled it over my head. Alisha did the same, yanking up her own hood. The shop owner eyed us warily, but a sale was a sale. “Can I help you find anything else?” Alisha smiled. “Just browsing, thanks.” We lingered by the dressing rooms, blending in with shoppers. The paparazzi pounded on the do

CHAPTER 10 Clara's POV “Thanks, Spencer, but I think I'll pass.” Spencer raised an eyebrow. “You're still doing this, Clara. Trying to go it alone?” I shrugged. “I don't know what you're talking about.” He chuckled. “Don't play dumb, Clara. You know exactly what I'm offering, and you need it.” “I don't need anything from you, Spencer. Especially not helping.” He leaned forward against the table, and I leaned back, not wanting to close the already tight space between us. “Why are you so hell-bent on doing this alone? You think it's about pride?” I looked away. “Think whatever you want to think. You sure as hell know I don't care.” Spencer's expression hardened. “You think you can survive without anyone, Clara? Is that what those three years in prison taught you?” My eyes snapped back to his, a spark of anger igniting. “You don't know what prison taught me.” He leaned in. “I know it taught you to be wary, to trust no one. But I'm not asking for trust, Clara. I'm asking for a p
