The leader laughs as he raises my chin. “It has been so long since we have had someone so…fresh.” Yeah, and it will be a lot longer. I just need an opening. The faint light of early morning filters through the curtains. My eyes flutter open. I am alive? My body feels so heavy. It hurts to wiggle my toe, but I can wiggle it. Where’s Frank? I blink a few times. I am at the ranch, but I don’t remember this room. I look down. My wound is bandaged and it hurts less, but fuck does it still hurt. I try to move. It doesn’t hurt as much as I expected it to; instead, it is just a dull ache. Maybe my wolf learned how to heal me? I look behind me, and there, slumped in a chair beside the bed, is Frank. He’s asleep. His hand was extended towards mine as if he had been holding my hand all night. He looks exhausted. Dried blood is everywhere. His clothes are in tatters. I try to force my eyes anywhere to him. I spot a mirror and I see my reflection. My hand touches my mark. It feels cooler than before. Over it, very faintly, are two tiny puncture wounds that have healed. I look closer without alerting Frank. The mark is gone. I glance back at Frank, who is toweling himself off. I want to tell him about the mark being gone, but something keeps me from it. If he finds out that it is gone, will he be happy or irate? I am not ready to find out. Frank walks past me, our eyes meet, and suddenly I am struck by this strong urge to grab him and kiss him. The mark might be gone, but the pull to him isn’t.
