MAKENA I raised my head, realizing that the heart in the bucket had stopped, and just then, Emelina walked into the room. She approached the bed, and then I heard it; I heard Val’s heart beating in his chest. Sitting up, tears blurred my vision before a sob escaped my mouth. It worked. It really worked. Brushing his hair back with trembling fingers, I softly called his name. But the sound died in my throat, and I froze as his face suddenly contorted in pain. “What’s happening to him?” I asked Emelina as he began writhing in the bed, tears leaking from his eyes, but she held out her hand, gesturing for me to move away from him. I didn’t budge; he was clearly in pain, and I couldn’t leave him. “Why is he doing this? What’s happening to him?” I began again, reaching for his hand, but a startled scream tore through my chest as he let out a terrifying growl.
