You say you’re not using anything, but” I glanced at him, then immediately away, “I don’t believe you.”His face twisted as he stared at me. I would have called it concern, but my head was too heavy and hot. I didn’t dare look so closely.He stepped toward me again, then stopped. “You know what?” he remarked slowly, his voice tinged with something I didn’t care to accept as his eyes searched my face, and he leaned slightly backward. “I’ll ride with the driver.”Our car was now two vehicles away.“What?” I heard myself say, even as I lost feeling in my extremities.His hand was on my elbow, holding me up. He was gazing into my face, his brow furrowed, and his gaze grew distant. “No,” he said quietly, as if talking to himself, just as I had been earlier, “you take the car,” he continued, his eyes refocusing on me.
