SKYE’S POV The morning after the festival, Nighthaven smelled of smoke, flowers, and rain. Lanterns still hung along the bridge, some swaying gently in the breeze, others dark and empty after burning through the night. The meadows below the fortress were scattered with footprints, flower petals, and the remnants of celebration. For the first time in months, I slept late. When I finally opened my eyes, sunlight was already spilling across the bed. Eryx was awake, propped against the headboard with a book in his hands. “Amazing,” I murmured. “You’ve become civilized.” He lowered the book. “I’ve always been civilized.” “You once threatened a council table.” “It was a very frustrating table.” I laughed and stretched, feeling the pleasant ache of too much dancing, walking, and standing. The festival had exhausted the entire kingdom. Even Kael had eventually stopped working. Granted, it happened sometime after midnight and required three separate people confiscating documents
