CHAPTER 40 — THE RULE HE BREAKS POV: Aidan Ezra doesn’t sleep. I know that because I wake up at 3:17 a.m. and he isn’t in bed. The space beside me is still warm, but the sheets are empty. Matteo is out cold on the couch, one arm hanging off the side, breathing slow and steady. I sit up. There’s light under the bathroom door. For a second I just watch it, heart thudding for no reason I can name. Then I get up. I don’t knock. I don’t know why. I just open it. Ezra is standing over the sink, hands braced against porcelain, head bowed. The light above him is harsh, cutting sharp lines into his face. There’s blood in the sink. Not a lot. Just enough. “Ezra. He looks up immediately. Calm. Too calm. “It’s nothing,” he says. “That’s your third ‘nothing’ this week.” He reaches for a towel, wipes his knuckles. The skin is split across both hands. “You’ve been training,” I say. “Yes.” “At three in the morning?” His eyes flick to mine. “I don’t sleep well.” “You never do.”
