Ava was standing on a low bench in the backyard with her hands clasped around her stomach. The afternoon was still, that sort of stillness which naturally made her serene, but today only caused her to be more conscious of herself. She was observing Lydia on the opposite side of the yard, as she slowly arranged the flowers in a little pot.
