The physician took off his spectacles and stared at Ava, his face heavy yet composed. “Sit down, please, Miss Ava," he hinted, indicating the chair on the other side of his desk. Ava sat on the chair in slow motion and her hands closed tightly on the chair, as her heartbeat thumped so loudly that she could hear it in her ears. The smell of the room was a little antiseptic, and the silence was a little heavier than it actually was, due to the low hum of medical machines.“So, I asked you about bone marrow donation and compatibility tests”, said the doctor, bringing his hands together. Ava got up earlier than the sun appeared and stared at the ceiling as though she had never slept at all. Her eyes were dry, and her breast felt heavy, as though she had wept all night without producing any sound. Then, a long moment passed, and she did not move. She just waited and listened to the muffled house and the muffled sound of her own heart.“I must do it, I must do it today”, she said to herself, with a trembling voice.The tip of her hand was slowly placed on her stomach. The hospital room was silent and dimly illuminated, and the sound of low-key medical machines was humming in the air. Ava was sitting alone in the examination room with both hands tightly clasped directly on her lap, and her fingers were intertwined as though they were clenched together.
