“I believe so. Sarah and Jax have brought him here five times, and he walked around and asked a million questions. I invited him to choose his own work area, and we set it up together. Noah knows that his easel and his paint brushes and his paints are all waiting for him here, whenever he feels ready.”“When does he start?”“I think tomorrow. I was going to ask Sarah today, but I’ll call her later.” She stood up again, and he admired her curvy thighs in those jeans. “So, shall I show you the areas for expansion?”“Sure.”He followed her down the hallway to a bunch of closed doors. She produced some keys and started to unlock the doors.“These rooms aren’t being used right now. None of them have any heat, so they’re useless in the winter, and they have no electricity, so they’re useless in the summer heat and in the evenings. I want to rip out all these walls and rewire everything, and have them put in heating and water pipes. I also want to take four of the rooms and make them one hug

Late that nightKing made eye contact with Tex and Honey. They were watching the warehouse closely, and he saw their wariness even from thirty feet away.Yeah, I'm with you, guys. This is all wrong.“King?” Knox's voice in his earpiece was hushed. “You there?”“Yeah,” he muttered back. “You and Tank in position?”“Copy that.”“What do you see?”A short pause. “Nothing much. No guard at the door, no cameras. The van is in the garage and the door is fucking wide open.”“Who the hell leaves the getaway vehicle in plain sight like that?” King said. “This is fucking amateur hour, man. No way these are the same people who took the kid from the hospital. That was textbook.”“No shit. Whoever these guys are, they're just the babysitters.”King looked at his watch. “OK. We move in two and on my mark. Knox, you and Tank take the front, Honey and Tex take the side. You clear my way, and I'll retrieve the package. Guys?”“Copy, boss,” Honey said. “We got it.”“And as tempting as it is to shoot th

The next morning, Naomi stared at her work laptop in complete, total, utter shock. The bank balance in front of her made not one lick of earthly sense. What the fuck? She had checked the bank account before leaving work yesterday, and it had contained just under ninety thousand dollars, thanks to an art gallery in Colorado Springs sending payment for a few sold items. But now? It stood at just under ninety thousand dollars – plus another million. What the actual fuck?Naomi picked up the phone and called Ryan Chang, the organization’s accountant. As she waited for his assistant to put her through, she stared out the window at the Rockies, her thoughts a jumbled mess.Matt – did you do this? There was a click. “Good morning, Naomi.”“Hi, Ryan. I’m calling because –” “Oh, I know why you’re calling, believe me.”“Yeah. Where the hell did this money come from?”“I followed up the second I got the e-mail alert and it turns out, it’s an anonymous donation. It was made yesterday through the

He stood up now too. “I am absolutely certain that the donor had no such thing in mind when he – or she – authorized the transfer. I’m sure all he – or she – was thinking about was the good of the organization.”“Yes. I’m sure too.”They stared at each other; King furious, Naomi possibly a smidge more so.“OK, then.” He shook his head, wondering just how the hell he’d gotten her so wrong. Normally, he read people way the fuck better than this; it was his job, after all. “I’ve got to get going.”Naomi watched him walk towards the door, and every cell in her body was screaming at her to stop him. What the hell was wrong with her, implying that he’d handed over that much money to get her to spread her legs? She knew it wasn’t true. She flashed back to a conversation that she and Mirrie had had many times over the months of her recovery, namely, the tendency for alcoholics to go on the offensive when they feel emotionally vulnerable or exposed. Matt Kingston had a way of making her feel o

“I’m not finished talking yet. Next up, whatever you think you’re taking from me, I can promise you that it’s nothing compared to what you’re giving me… and no, I don’t mean sex. I mean love, baby, and total forgiveness and understanding. You think just anyone would be able to look at my life, and all the shit I’ve done, and still see any good in me? You think just anyone could know that I planned to kill their ex, and then forgive me for that? See the man that I’m trying so fucking hard to be?”“Jax...”“Still not done, doll. I know that you’re not used to letting someone else take care of you, but you’d better fucking learn how, and I mean damn quick. Because I’m not going to stop taking care of you, no matter how many mugs you throw across the room. You hear me? I love you, and you’re the most important thing in my life, and you’re mine to take care of. It won’t be like this forever – it’s just for now. So, let me, Sarah. Let me, just for now.” Something inside of her broke, and S
