FernBlackmoor rises from the land like a fortress carved out of shadow. Stone walls tower above us, dark and weathered, etched with claw marks and old scars that tell stories no one bothers to soften. Wolves line the inner courtyard as we arrive. They are massive and watchful, and their gazes sharp and assessing. She smells faintly of herbs and antiseptic. I nod in her direction, but don’t get out of the car.“I’m Maelis,” she continues. “The pack physician.”A physician. My steps falter as I climb out of the car. “I’m fine,” I say automatically, even though no one asked.“That remains to be seen,” she replies, already turning. “Come.”Before I can look to Gaven, before I can think, I’m ushered through a side entrance and down a narrow corridor.
