꧁ JAXON'S POVGrandfather used to say a man who inherits a name inherits a debt. I was twelve when I first heard it, and I remember thinking it sounded wise. By twenty-six, I'd figured out it was just a nicer way of saying you owe us before you've even done anything.I never picked this life. Nobody asked me if I wanted the company, the pack rank, the expectation that I'd marry well and run things properly and make William proud from wherever he was watching. It had simply been assigned to me the way a house gets assigned an address, and every year since, someone had found a new way to measure how far short I fell of a dead man's example.Lyra never got measured that way. Not by him.I'd never let myself examine that thought too closely. She was mine, in the way something becomes yours simply by growing up in the same rooms, eating at the same table, being the only person in the house who talked to you like you were a person and not a project. Not romantic. I told myself that firmly,

꧁ LYRA'S POVAsher came back three days later, and this time he didn't ask to speak with me privately at all.He stood in the middle of the sitting room, in front of Thomas, Eleanor, Aurelia, and a very still Jaxon by the window, and made the whole thing impossible to pretend hadn't happened.“I'd like to formally court Lyra.” He said it plainly, no preamble, the way he'd said everything since the moment I met him. "With her family's knowledge, if not necessarily their blessing."The room did something complicated all at once.Eleanor's face went through three separate expressions before settling on delight, and I watched her calculate the exact same math Thomas had run in his study — an Alpha's mate, elevating a family name that had spent generations somewhere respectable but unremarkable. Thomas recovered faster, already reaching to shake Asher's hand like he'd planned this outcome from the beginning.“Well.” Thomas's voice boomed with the particular warmth he saved for good news th

꧁LYRA'S POVHe picked a different room this time. Not the study, not the desk between us like a negotiating table. A sitting room with two chairs facing each other and nothing else between them, which felt deliberate in a way I appreciated more than I expected to.“You said you wanted to tell me everything,” I said, taking the chair across from him. “So tell me.”He didn't ease into it. That was becoming the thing I trusted most about him — he didn't warm up a hard truth before delivering it, didn't soften the edges to make himself easier to hear.“Fifteen years ago, a witch cursed me,” he said. “Stripped my ability to feel most emotions. Not all of them — anger works fine, so does calculation, so does the particular satisfaction of winning something. But warmth, attachment, fear for anyone but myself — gone. I've run this territory for over a decade as essentially a very efficient machine wearing a man's face.”“That's not something people usually lead with.”“You asked for everythin

꧁ LYRA'S POVI packed my whole life into two suitcases, and it took less than an hour. That should have meant something sad. In my old life it would have — this exact scene had played out as a funeral once, Jaxon's ring on my finger, my mother's practiced tears, a house pretending to grieve a departure it had engineered from the start. This time I folded my clothes without ceremony, checked the room once for anything left behind, and found nothing worth the extra look.Eleanor found me on the stairs, already performing whatever version of this moment she'd decided suited her best.“I can't believe you're really leaving,” she said, hand pressed to her chest like the words cost her something. “Our little Lyra, a future Luna.”“You'll manage.” I shifted the suitcase to my other hand. “You always do.”“Write to us. Often.” She reached for a hug I let happen without leaning into it. “And remember everything we've done for you, won't you? All those years.”“I remember everything,” I said, a

꧁ ASHER'S POVThe council chamber sat twelve, and today all twelve were watching me the way they watched everything that threatened to shift the balance of who held power in this territory.Marcus opened without preamble, which was itself a strategy — get ahead of anyone else framing the conversation first. “I want to be clear this isn't personal,” he said, folding his hands on the table like a man about to deliver difficult but necessary news. “It's procedural. We have an Alpha claiming a mate bond formed within days, with a woman who has no prior standing in any pack, adopted into a Beta family with no political weight of its own. That timeline alone warrants scrutiny.”“The timeline isn't in question,” I said. “The bond is real. I've confirmed it myself.”“I don't doubt your sincerity.” Marcus's tone stayed smooth, reasonable, the exact register that made him dangerous — he wasn't attacking Lyra, wasn't attacking me directly, just attacking the shape of events in a way that sounded
