Chapter 51

If Nicole wanted good wood, she wouldn't find it in malls or office buildings. Plus, the museums were already underwater. However, there was one place. Maybe it was worth trying their luck there.Westbridge was one of the largest furniture manufacturing hubs in the world. In Fairfield, there was a massive international furniture convention center, a major landmark that hosted a global expo every year. This year was the 30th anniversary. The event was bigger than ever, with ads everywhere months in advance.Nicole thought back carefully. The expo had been scheduled to start three days before the typhoon hit. It was supposed to run for two weeks. Which meant it hadn't ended.Furniture from all over the world gathered in one place. How grand would that be?She didn't care much about most of it. Modern furniture rarely used solid wood.Traditional pieces, however, were different.Nicole remembered one of the ads. A major brand had built a full bedroom set out of thousand-year-o

Chapter 52

Faye froze for a second after hearing that.Nicole had only studied medicine for a year, and most of that was just theory. Yet Mary had sounded so sure, and they had all just gone along with it.Thinking about it now, Faye realized they really had been putting Nicole in a tough spot."Then… Can you lend us your boat?" Faye asked. "We'll take him to the hospital ourselves.""If you want to play the hero, go ahead," Nicole said, stepping closer. Her tone turned sharp. "You got dragged into a mess, and now you want to drag me down with you?"Faye's face went pale. She looked as if she had just been struck, her gaze torn and complicated.Nicole didn't wait. She turned and kept heading downstairs.By the time she reached the sixth floor, Faye came running after her. "Wait!"Nicole didn't stop.Faye's voice rose, angry and uneven. "You knew they had bad intentions! Why didn't you warn me?"Nicole finally glanced back. "Who are you to me? Why would I warn you?"She didn't wait for

Chapter 53

Nicole slammed the throttle forward, cutting hard into a drifting turn. The boat rocked violently, nearly throwing her overboard. She steadied herself just in time, gripping tight and adjusting her balance. After a wide arc through the current, she finally made it to the convention center. It was only twelve floors, but each level was tall, giving the whole structure a massive, imposing presence.Nicole circled it once. There were no signs of people and no broken glass.Fairfield was built around furniture manufacturing. Most of the surrounding area was factories. Residential and commercial zones were across the river, completely swallowed by the storm. All she could see was water. The convention center stood alone in it. The glass walls were thick. A hammer barely made a dent.Nicole switched tools, using a window breaker. After several strikes, the glass finally gave way.The place was huge. The once grand hall was already flooded, but looking up, its scale still showed.

Chapter 54

Nicole rolled up her sleeves and got to work, tearing everything apart.Once something came loose, she tossed it straight into the storage space. Matching tables, chairs, stools, and vanities… She didn't leave a single piece behind. There were plenty of other antique pieces, too. Tables, heavy armchairs, chaise lounges, and a bunch of stuff she couldn't even name.Honestly, smashing the display cases made her palms sweat, even with layers of cloth wrapped around her face.If this were normal times, she would probably end up locked away for life. But this was the end of the world. Rules didn't mean much anymore. She kept going, knocking and prying, not even sparing wooden rods or scrap pieces. By the time she stopped, she was drenched in sweat, her head spinning.Nicole found a spot to sit, tore open a chocolate bar for energy, then cracked open a can of Red Bull. After catching her breath, she switched off the flashlight and slipped into the storage space.Broken, worn furnitur

Chapter 55

Nicole pried open the maintenance supply storage and finally found diesel inside one of the rooms. Each drum held about 42 gallons, and there were 30 of them. That came out to roughly 1,260 gallons total, around four and a half tons. With an international expo going on and a once-in-a-century typhoon hitting at the same time, there was no way they would only stock this much for emergencies. So she kept going.Anywhere she could break into, she did. Sure enough, she uncovered two more storage rooms, both packed with diesel. Altogether, it added up to about 12 tons. Her motorboat and RV both ran on diesel. This would last her a long time.Excitement hit, and she swept every last drum into the storage space. The storage space already had several solar battery units, but why choose? She wanted it all.She grabbed her tools and carefully dismantled the generators, trying to keep them intact. Then she packed them away along with the tools and spare parts from the maintenance departme

Chapter 56

With this thing in hand, Nicole would finally be able to sleep a little easier.Another thanks to that CEO for his contribution. There was one safe left, the one she had taken from the office. This one probably wasn't anything illegal, right? She pried it open.Inside was a box stuffed full of paper.More accurately, cash. Each stack held ten thousand. There were 20 stacks, which meant two hundred thousand in total. All crisp, brand-new bills.Nicole hadn't expected that.If she had gotten her hands on this before everything fell apart… Yeah, she would probably be locked up by now.The cash hadn't been officially voided, but it had already lost most of its value. Still, it was better than nothing. She stuffed the money into her backpack and dumped the empty safes into the floodwater. She had more or less made it through all 18 floors in one go. Going out solo wasn't easy. She pulled out her phone and checked the offline map, looking for anywhere nearby worth checking out.T

Chapter 57

Nicole's view was too blurry to make anything out, so she pulled out her binoculars. Two inflatable rafts came into focus. A handful of men and women stood on them, gripping wooden poles and metal rods, swinging again and again at a window ledge on the fifth floor. On the ledge stood a soaked dog. Its teeth were bared, snarling, and it was barking like it was ready to tear them apart."Come on, kill it! We'll have meat tonight!"The group was fired up, waving their weapons, laughing as they tried to corner it.The dog dodged, slipping and scrambling, but it didn't back down. It held its ground, fierce and desperate. The disaster had hit without warning. No one had time to prepare. Food had been soaked and ruined. Plenty of people had already starved to death. Now, even a skinny dog looked like a full meal.It was meat. Who wouldn't want it?Their eyes gleamed, and they looked hungry enough to tear it apart alive.Nicole hadn't planned on getting involved. The moment she saw

Chapter 58

Before the attackers could react, Cola launched himself forward, leaping straight at the incoming raft.Belgian Malinois were built for this. He slammed into one of them hard, knocking the man flat.In just a few exchanges, three people had already been thrown into the water, and two were bleeding from bites. One of them pulled out a knife and drove it straight toward Cola.Nicole cut in fast, slamming her motorboat into the raft and flipping it over. She spun the wheel hard, swinging back around."Cola!"Cola pushed off with all four legs. His thin body flew ten feet through the air before landing cleanly on the boat. The engine roared. Water sprayed high behind them as they tore away. By the time the others scrambled back onto their raft, the boat was already gone. The sky was dark, heavy with clouds. They hadn't even gotten a good look at Nicole's face.No dog meat stew for them today. They suffered a bunch of injuries for nothing. They cursed their bad luck under their bre

Chapter 59

The moment Nicole stepped into the building, someone spotted the dog.Hunger hit fast. People started talking about killing it for meat.Cola's fur bristled. He bared his teeth, dropping into a full attack stance, eyes sharp with killing intent.Nicole drew her knife."Anyone who wants to eat my dog, step forward."The hallway went quiet for a second.Since when had she kept a dog? They cursed under their breath. Damn it! They barely had food themselves, and she was raising a dog? She was actually feeding a dog instead of people? The anger spread quickly."That's not hers. It's a stray," someone said, recognizing Cola. "I've seen it hanging around across the street.""Yeah! I've seen it, too. Almost bit my kid once.""Kill it! Split the meat!"Nicole swung her knife and smashed the hallway trash can in half. "If you want meat, you have to get through me."The crowd remembered how she had chopped people down like slicing fruit. A few of them instinctively stepped back.Sti

Chapter 60

"Who the hell are you calling a freeloader?" Edward roared."If the shoe fits." Nicole let out a sharp laugh. "And where do you get the nerve to keep pushing me like this?"Before he could respond, her blade drove straight into his thigh. He screamed and dropped to the ground. The others rushed to help him up."Nicole, come on… Let's talk this out. You're going too far."She didn't even look back as she headed upstairs. "That was your leg. Next time, it'll be your heart. Try to appreciate being alive."No one dared to chase her anymore. Their faces twisted with resentment, but that was as far as it went.Behind the door, Mary, her hair uneven and hacked off, was shaking with anger.Useless! Every single one of them! When Nicole reached the 17th floor, she stopped short. The stairwell door looked like it had grown spikes. More accurately, it had been covered in welded nails, all pointing outward. That wasn't just one door, but all three of them.Forget people, even a rat woul
