When the gates of the orphanage came into view, I frowned deeply. ‘Somewhere I wouldn’t like’ he had said and it confused me because I’d never given off the impression that I didn’t like this place. The words were spoken with so much sincerity and I didn’t know what to say to him. He was always so mad around me. Constantly snapping and even now, he had scolded me over my opinion. My eyes fluttered open. I was in a soft bed, a thin blanket thrown over my legs. I stretched as I took in the room. Well furnished and decorated but managed to look simple. Only the necessities in sight.The sound of loud laughter forced me to my feet. I walked towards the door and the sound was louder…clearer.I followed it until I was standing in the kitchen. Soft chirping woke me up. The birds perched on the window ledge singing merrily. The sun streamed softly into the room and I rolled to my side. It was cold. Leonidas had not slept in here. A strange feeling settled in me but I quickly dismissed it as fast as it had come. I shouldn’t expect him to sleep beside me or feel disappointed when he didn’t. I got dressed for the morning and found a dress neatly folded in the half empty wardrobe. As I walked out of the room and down the stairs, I couldn’t help but take note of the simplicity of this house. It was old but sturdy. Absolutely nothing like the castle or the home a king would own. It gave off the feeling of closeness and warmth. The kind of warmth that came from a loving family living together. Burnt eggs greeted my nose as I stepped into the kitchen. I was amazed by the taste of her every single fucking time and I had to admit I’d never wanted anybody as much as she did. If only she were…. I didn’t let that thought complete itself. My body was wrecked by morning but it was a good feeling. I lay in bed alone, replaying the night and I had to admit to myself that I loved sex with the king. I stood in the backyard under the make shift roof. The rain drizzled lightly. The air was cold so I wrapped my arms around myself. I had no idea how long I’d stood here. From when he dug the earth single handedly until when he had laid his brother to rest. Zeus had been gone for a while now. When he refused his help to dig, he asked him to leave. He wanted to do everything himself. And he did. Under the rain, he’d filled the grave but he didn’t leave. The rain pattered against his back, soaking the material of his shirt against his skin but he seemed unbothered. He just stared while I watched him. My heart ached at his loss. It was never an easy thing to lose a loved one. I saw how close he and Fenrir had been, how badly he’d wanted him to live. The extent he’d go just to see it happen but sadly not everything was under his control. And death had snatched Fenrir away from him. I recoiled, like his words had burned me. I wasn't speaking to Leonidas anymore. He'd dropped the vulnerability and gentleness. King Leonidas was back. Ruthlessness shone in his eyes as he stared down at me. Somehow, he felt colder and I knew...it was Fenrir's death that caused it. "Of course" I said in a monotone voice and walked towards the door. The carriage was waiting out front. The rain had reduced to light drizzle and it beat down on my clothes as I walked towards the carriage. I climbed in, wrapping my arms around myself to warm myself from the cold. King Leonidas was absent from the carriage as it rolled out, bumping against the rocky hill. I ignored the feeling of disappointment that surged within me and sat steady. It was midnight when we arrived at the castle. The rain had gotten heavier and a guard shielded me as I walked into the castle. “Thank you” I offered a small smile and surprisingly, he returned it. KING LEONIDAS POV I stood over the balcony, overlooking the glowing bonfire. Wolves prowled around the fire, teeth snapping at each other. The air grew thick with intensity and the onlookers watched in anticipation. I emptied the glass of alcohol down my throat and I relished the burn as it settled in my stomach. "Searching for something?" Richard's voice reached my ears as he stood beside me. I kept my gaze on the moving wolves below as I held my glass out for a drink.
